Go to Wickes . Buy some paint , buy some kitchen units , taps etc . Buy some fake wooden flooring . A Throw from Wilko for the sofa maybe .
Fit this stuff . Move the boat south . Every time u go thru a lock add add £50 to the asking price .
By time you get Uxbridge it ll be worth 30 - 35 K and some dreamer will bite your hand off for it if u discount to 25 K

My guess : This is a buy to live in / sell " investment " . Youd be bonkers to buy it for any other reason IMO .
I have a CRT mooring and in my agreement it states that my boat must have an engine - it must be moveable ( i think it says this anyway ) and this big boats on a crt mooring . Strange ... maybe ?
To me , its a ballache waiting to happen unless its bought , given a splash of " london narrowboat white " internally , some wooden floors , some poncey taps etc and put on a resi mooring in order to make a profit - as a cruising boats its got to be useless ?

I cannot offer advice as such - but just some thoughts .
I would be very wary of buying a boat that size . If it doesnt go thru any locks you will be " chained " to using cranes if / when u ever need to move it and i expect you will pay a small fortune to do so . The fact that this boat needs to be moved by crane only mayb also seriously affect your ability to sell it later on unless you put it on a residential mooring and sell it on as a package .
i know these moorings and i do not think it will be an easy job .
You ll be best to contact some firms who do this sort of thing or pop into the two boatyards nearby for advice .
I would expect this boat move to cost a fortune - full on London prices i expect . Get some figures and have a serious rethink . If u intend to keep it it may become an expensive purchase going forward

ETA : do you KNOW how long it is for certain ? How have you ascertained it to be 78 ft ? seems a strange size to me
Eta: im sure ive also read that the costs involved are mainly down to the crane and lorry hire . The fact that the distance between lift out and lift in is very short may be of no consequence. Again , get in touch with companies who do this work for more accurate info or the nearby boatyards

I have a suggestion. Its a bit weird mind you so bear with me ....
Why not use the cooker thats already there ? Its works i assume & it seems to have been acceptable since 2004 .
Sounds like a lot of hassle to me to change a functioning oven because it isnt pretty enough .

The only work ive ever done on my eber was 3 years ago and involved stripping it down and decoking & changing a pair of gaskets . At the same time i cleaned out a tiny fuel filter ( i have a wsc 4 ) & i replaced the wire gauze that fits over the glowpin .
I used a video on YouTube about 8 minutes long . Cant put a link up though but its definately there . Thats all ive ever done but its been fine since .
From time to time it does just cut out very instantly after about 40 mins . It just stops dead . But always runs fine next day . I can t be bothered to worry about it .
when was yours last serviced / decoked etc

Do u not perhaps think that if you advise what " code 052 "' actually means then you might get some help ?
Or , are you expecting potential helpers to go away & google what it means in order to come back and provide advice ?
" Code 052 & 30 " means absolutely nothing unless you own the exact same unit .
You say that the fault code info "'adds little " . This i don't understand- surely these codes , once interpreted, are telling you fault that needs adressing ?

Im rather enjoying , in a car crash TV type way , all these bonkers questions from novices ( not newbies ... good god how i hate that term ) . When i bought my boat i was , and i still am , a " bit in the dark " about my boats electrics and mechanics but slowly one learns do they not .
Recently tho it seems theres a new generation of idiots who appear to have avoided going to school ...ever . At least , i think they didn t judging by some peoples actions .
Last year there was the lady whos boat was a disaster after failing to use a bit of judgement .
Recently there was an unbelievable thread about two halfwits who didn t even know that thier engine required oil
People wanting to sell houses to buy big widebeams , seemingly on a whim , cos theyve watched too much telly and seen people living " low cost " or two geriatrics banging hire boats everywhere they go . .
Now someone wants an electric oven to operate from 12 v batteries despite having gas already available .
According to government statistics as a nation we must be getting cleverer because each year more and more folk are getting top grades at GCSE & and head off to university . Are these the same people who think engines don t need oil , or who think its a spiffing idea to buy a boat despite having never ever been on one ?
Im expecting in the near future someone to start a thread asking why thier sunbed isn t working even tho they fitted brand new batteries just the day before and then this new trend for dunce style questions will have reached its pinnacle .
I do wonder sometimes how such people exist .

"'you ve done your twenty miles ..... " Good grief what a daft comment . Should get some sort of prize i think .
After youve completed your obligatory twenty as you seem to consider them you get a little certificate for your window .When u do another twenty you get another one . Bit like Lancaster bombers had a little bomb symbol put on the fuselage to indicate the number of completed sorties during WW2 .

I can only imagine that unless CRT declare a stoppage then boaters carry on as normal . If people r pegged on lock landings then they can expect to have boats pulling into thier swim as CRT have ok d it . Unless a stoppage notice is declared the canal is open and so stopping at lock landings is legit as CRT have failed to advise otherwise .
I do wonder whether CRT have someone on hand at such events incase of friction but thats a little bit too close to forward thinking for such a bunch of innefficient office bound suits innit

Quite amazingly my kettle uses zero power from the battery bank . This i find very reassuring considering that my batteries provide all the electricity on my 100%!off grid boat . How do i achieve this ?
By putting a kettle on my gas hob and lighting it with a match .
No possibility whatsoever to have an impact on battery capacity & it ll probably be quicker .

I would wonder whether CRT have a " presence " at such events ? . If they have given permission for an angling competition then thats one thing , but IF theyve failed to provide clear guidelines as to where is & is not to be pegged - lock landings for instance then id expect a degree of conflict as no one should be pegged on them .
If this is the case then is suggest CRT are completely at fault as theyve failed to foresee potential problems .
Would i find that surprising ... not really

I discovered last summer that my flue had corroded in a similar manner . The very top of the flue , where it entered the roof collar had rusted away . I asked at the local boatyard and they cut 6 inches off the top of the existing flue pipe and welded an offcut of the same diameter to replace the top of the flue . Cost me £30 . Once done it was refitted into the existing roof collar which needed a fair bit of surgery all done with a hammer and chisel to remove what is technically classed as " crud " . New pipe fitted and then i was advised to stuff the gap between flue & collar with fibre glass rope which was awful stuff to work with .
A cheap job - i think i got off lightly

Ok . Im not lost as to why anglers will annoy boaters . Last time i was out i ended up tangling up a boaters lines cos he ignored me whilst i pulled into the lock landing he was sat on . He raised his voice . I told him to "F*** Off & sit back down " . Which he did & that saved me the job of doing it for him .
He was a bell-end and deserved to be spoken to that way . So - yes i do know what an annoyance they can be .
Most - in my experience are not . Most acknowledge my boat . Most give a little nod of appreciation as i slow down and steer away from thier equipment as much as is sensible or possible .
Occasionally one will be a tit . It happens . I judge that person but not " anglers" . Hes probably at arse at home & at work too .
I wouldn t suggest slowing right down to tickover either - just slowing down to a pace that the boater feels is a happy medium . If those taking part in the competition are unhappy - tough . Mayalid is correct to not slow to tickover . The anglers ought to be informed or experienced enuff to know that boaters will slow down but not right down .
The changing nature of canals is part of the reason i cannot stand the whole " us & them "'mentality . We are all having to share them more and more & boaters are no longer ( if they ever were ) a priority . CRT are attempting to reach out to other users for publicity & ultimately more money .
A few days a year with having to be more courteous than usual isn t really a big deal is it in the grand scheme of things . Yes , maybe anglers could be more courteous in return ( maybe theyre just concentrating ... apparently its a " sport " !!! ) but that needn t mean boaters should get overly heated up .
Id say . Slow down but not right down , wave occasionally , be friendly , try to appreciate that they are engaging in thier pastime as you are yours & you 'll done all you can and been completely reasonable . If they choose to be rude or ignorant then so be it .

. Fishing is pointless , stamp collecting is pointless , model railway sets are pointless , flying a kite is pointless . Going between A & B by narrowboat is pointless - except for the fact that it brings pleasure to those involved . Does there need to be any more of a reason than that ?
Its promising to be a nice sunny day today - so why not stop bellyaching about other peoples chosen source of enjoyment and get on with your own .

This is all good stuff - OP TAKE NOTICE PLEASE .
The two above posts refer to boats & boating life . But also the good sense of holding on to a land based home . However much one wants to boat off into the sunset , the ugly truth is that eventually one MAY have to go back ashore sooner than hoped . This isn t pessimism , its realism . Planning is boring . But planning is wise & peace of mind is all but priceless .
OP - you have an opportunity if you choose to accept tje hard work of making it happen to " have your cake & eat it " by both owning a property & using it to fund your boating hopes .
The two previous posters are doing this - so can you

You have hit the nail on the head Sir . Even if i could afford & get the necessary loans to buy in SE England i wouldn t do it . My half arsed plan is to combine working hard with boating often . Im a humble chap , don t need much in the way of frills . Work hard , earn well , save wisely . Then go & buy someone well away from London , maybe somewhere oop norf ( if they ll have me !) , near a canal would be good . Just an idea , not yet a defo , but gotta strive on i think & yes - i think you re correct again to say 10 years rather than twenty as i don t intend to slog myself half to death but enough to organise a nice , simple humble place - that ll suit me down to the ground

In all honesty i can only imagine the way to realise the vision you have for the interior of your boat is to buy for way below your budget & use the remainder for alterations .
I expect you would need to be imaginative with ideas and a degree compromise is likely to still be necessary . If u feel up to it you could even force yourself to sit thru the mind torture of " George Clarkes amazing / small / whatever spaces " for ideas . Personally id rather endure an hours waterboarding .
I expect it could be rewarding ( fun ??) to design ( theres someone on here ..ally ?... who advises professionally on refits / fitouts etc ) your own interior space . Compromising here and there to create the usage you want . Fold up beds , slidy in and out bits n bobs etc - it could cool . I think youre 100% correct to want an office space that disappears when work is finished . I use my boat to study ( dinette !) but when done everything gets put away for the same reasons you state .
It can all be done with a combination of budget , imagination & budget again but i strongly suspect you may wait quite some time for what u want to pop up on the market .
