  1. Hi everyone :)

We're fitting out our boat and are deciding whether to run the 12v wiring outside the walls in conduit or behind the walls.

Conduit would be great for access but expensive so I want to know if we run them behind does it also need conduit?/can the cabling sit against the insulation or does it need a certain amount of gap? I've had a look at the BSS handbook but its doesn't give much detail and cant get in touch with any of our sparkys right now. Got loads of work to do but am being held up by not knowing what to do first, walls or electrics..

I'd love to hear your opinions/thoughts/experiences/BSS knowledge..

    Thanks in advance

  2. Thanks people, all very helpful, much appreciated.

The stove just doesn't get hot enough and the are some not completely burnt bits in the morning. I'll check the bottom vent, I did think it was ok though, and we do clean out all the ash. We've tried different coals some are better than others (i'm not sure what they were).

Will let you know if we succeed!

  3. Plenty of mooring close to the water point if you can get in between the constant moorers who seem to have stayed on the winter mooring since the spring

which water point is this? and thanks :)

Funny enough, I need the same sort of thing to build my wheelhouse. I only need 3 or 4 days but have some prefabbed steel to lift from flat bed lorry. So if you find somewhere, can you please let me know? Thanks!

will do prob going to do a reccy next weekend

  4. Hi there,

We have an Esse Montrose stove on our widebeam at the moment but as it won't stay lit overnight really need another. Unless theres a problem with the stove? The Flue is clear, not really sure what else would affect its staying power..

Anyway we think we need a bigger stove anyway and want a back bolier for 2-3 radiators. We have quite a few big windows. Was wondering what advice anyone might have on the subject. Thinking a Squirrel would be too small but I've read that other widebeams have them and its fine. Our boat interior length is about 56' (its a 68' with cruiser stern).

Would be great to get a stove that's at the cheaper end of the scale but dont want to risk the same problem of it not staying in overnight.

    Thanks for reading :)

  5. Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on composting toilets... I'm considering getting one, seems like the cleanest most eco general best all round solution. Wondering how it might affect resale value compared to a remote tank pump out. And will I have to store my waste for more than 6 months to compost and do cold winter weather conditions make composting take longer?

    Thanks, bye :)

  6. Hello everyone!

Does anyone have any experience in going down the Kennet and Avon in anything around 7'6-8' high? I know there's one bridge near Newbury that is around this height and have heard of someone doing it in an 8'. Would love to hear of some 1st hand experience, we need to get our boat and it's wheelhouse back to London in one piece but may have to cut it down.

    Thanks in advance :)

  7. Hi again!

So.. we're about to buy a barge, 70'x10'and need to get it from Worcester to London. As inexperienced boaters without loads of time we are looking into hiring someone to bring it half the way back for us, bypassing the tricky bits then we will take over perhaps around the Reading area. Does anyone have any pointers/know anyone who does this kind of thing?

    Thanks!

  8. Ok, so we're looking into hiring someone to drive it from worcester via the Severn towards London, and then we'll take over.

    OR

Get it towed on a trailer to Oxford or Reading then get it put back in the water there and head to London.... Cranes seem to be very expensive as the boat is around 35 tonnes

  9. Hello everyone!

We're very excited, about to buy a barge in Worcester and need to get it back to London...

Its a 70x10' wide beam with a wheel house that's about 7'4" high. Apparently there's one bridge we'll probably have to invite lots of people onboard to weigh us down. Wondered if anyone has any thoughts/experience on the route to London? Is there anything we need to know about the route? We know there's the possibility of having to go down the Severn if the Thames and Severn canal is closed, is traveling down the Severn tricky?

    Thanks in advance :)
