  1. So Janet if i understand you correctly, your suggested route, would be from Barnoldswick base to Bingly, turn and travel back past the base to the Barrowford locks? (But not through) and then back to base in the morning ? This is all within a week ? roughly how many hours per day ? We are looking for a particularly scenic route that includes lots of canal architechture, pretty villages and pubs every night. All on this section ? I will of course buy a canal guide which i found invaluable on sight as it were, however they were of little use in planning while relaxing at home . Thanks for your help Derek.
  2. I never imagined that i was to be the catalyst for Canal world war ! As it is obvious that neither party wants to concede the last word, Can i call a truce at this point and thank all for the positive responses EARLIER IN THE POST ? Have though, realistically to accept that it will likely continue , only question is, which party will buckle and continue this pointless crusade ? Happy travels fellow boaters, may i meet you all along the way at some stage. Derek
  3. Thanks 'The Bitch ( its very odd replying to that pen name ) some very encouraging words and some i think will lead me to conclude i have to hire Grace !!, Appreciate your comments - invaluable in making decisions fro such a distance.
  4. Ha , i have done something similar- wore my All Black rugby shirt in a Welsh bar, worked wonders,The Welsh are very generous ( didn't have the heart to remind them they have never beaten us .)
  5. it just occurred to me with all the replies - whether everyone has wifi access ?? or are you all now moored up for the evening and sitting in the pub ? If so, and i bring my Travel PC , how often will i get an internet connection? Derek.
  6. It does appear as if i have raised debate on a relevant subject. However most comments have been very reassuring, and for those i am grateful. I did find the considerate boater info helpful. There were points i had not considered, and i shall now be better informed. My first experience was very memorable such that i can hardly wait to return. Thanks all.
  7. May i ask some of you 'old hands'for a few pointers on the above? On my first and only canal holiday, even though i had read the boaters handbook, there were a couple of instances where i felt i was being given the sideways look, presumeably for having transgressed ! Although i am at a loss as to what. I was told at one stage that hirers were not accepted into the canal cameraderie by owners, but i cannot say i experienced anything like.Although were that the case i would have no trouble accepting that. Are there any unspoken norms by which everyone is expected to abide ? basic rules i understand, slowing when passing - allowing those in favour at a lock to go first etc. Appreciate any pointers so as i am better prepared next time . Many thanks .
  8. Snap, we did exactly the same, got as far as Croperdy, from Stoke Golding, But i thought the OP only has 4 days , surely thats quite a push ? Our days were not what i would describe as short, averaging 8 hours as i recall and we took 6 days for the return trip. Just 2 crew though.
  9. Thanks for the link. Have just done a quick recce. Am i right in thinking that a round trip from Barnoldswick to Binghly on the Leeds /Liverpool, is a comfortable week? I am happy to cruise 8 hours / day. There will be just 2 crew .
  10. i am somewhat new to the website, wondering if there is a detailed map of the Skipton area which will give info re number of locks/lift bridges etc , so i am able to determine the 'workload'?
  11. For what its worth, my first and only trip was with the Ashby Boat Co at Stoke Golding. We managed to get as far as Croperdy on the South Oxford, a delightful village. No days were overly long, and we were just two, so the locks were a little slow going. Admittedly this was May so the days were quite long. A wonderful experience .
  12. Thanks guys for the very prompt reply. I am going to enjoy this forum, and look forward to finalising my trip. Sounds like the L & L it is then. Derek.
  13. Hi all, new to the forum and keen to discover . I have hired once before - a week on the South Oxford. loved it but want to enjoy a different terrain next time . the countryside of South yorkshire - Derbyshire and Cheshire appeals and have looked quickly at the Leeds Liverpool. We want to see typical stone built villages/pubs and avoid built up areas. Happy to contemplate 5 -8 locks / day but not flights. Would need a 4 berth boat, that has the ability to include a couple of small easy chairs in preference to the more common bench style seating. ( mid 60's so needing some comfort ) Any suggestions ? i post regularly on Trip advisor but canal cruising is rarely discussed. Thanks Derek
