  1. Last year I made a touge in cheek post about how horrible the Middlewich branch was. Only because there were no pubs and I really wanted a beer. Lots of replies about how good it is and where the pubs are. I'm on it again and have stopped at the Badger. The branch is good again. Tomorrow is Middlewich where I'll enjoy some music and weather permitting have some books out for sale.

  2. Doh! That's a bugger cos would love to be there and not very far boat days away so could ... but ...

booked in at Pelsall so can't unfortunately.

That's the worst thing about this time of year - too many things happening at the same time each weekend.

My original plan was to be at Pelsall but delays last month meant I couldn't make it so I'm here instead. I think your still in Audlam - I should be there Monday or Tuesday. Hope too see you then - are you in the marina?

Thinking of coming down for the day (in our camper van) depending on work - think we saw your boat on the Rufford Branch a while back

Yes you'll have seen me there, that's where the above delay occurred.
  3. Herbidacious has been having cooling problems since the head was rebuilt. I doubt very much whetjher a fouled prop is the cause and suspect an airlock in the skin tank. Other than that I'd be looking at a further problem with the head, cracked or warped. I hope not for Sue's sake but Benjt can rest assured he has not caused the problem, it already existed though I believe Sue thought it solved.

  4. I inadvertently set off up the Llangollen without topping up. Stopped at Swanley but moved on when I saw non duty was 99pence.By Whitchurch I had to get some and paid 1.04 non duty. What a rip off. It seems almost everywhere is charging £1 plus. Except Whixall who are advertising 91 pence. If you are going on this canal top up before you get there and if you need fuel there Whixall seems the place.

  5. Since the 3outage last Wednesday I have no Internet on my laptop and am relying on my phone and wifi pubs. Tonight in Ellesmere I found three. The first was packed with loud music so didn't go in. Next only had Tetleys so didn't go in and the third only connects to the phone.

I'm doing the Llangollen bit of my trip in a bit of a rush as I want tone at Middlewich for the folk and boat festival then down the Shroppie

The Mersey trip was great and in good weather. Next tidal will be the Severn to Bristol.

As usual there istore on the website but struggling to keep it up to date.

  6. After the bridge fiasco, I finally arrived in Salthouse Dock today. Yesterday I got through the two swing bridges and to Litherland, today joined by Sue we cruised into Liverpool. Fantastic trip, I was quite excited and very impressed along the waterfront despite the rain. Piccies on the website shortly.

And nothing at all attatching itself to the prop. I've seen far far worse stretches elsewhere (Rochdale - see previous posts).

  7. It does not get much better than this weekend, on friday i got a phone call to say that i had got the job ive been after since last sept as Northampton marina officer (beckets park) so to celebrate we joined team Tawny owl at Longwood for the BCN challenge. Best fun ive had boating for a long time, and i won a tenner on the lotto, all this in brilliant weather, back home now getting ready to leave the Witham for goodclapping.gifclapping.gif

can anybody recomend a good place to stop to do blacking and find a marine electrician on the GU ???

You could always try beckets park on the Northampton arm.

Congratulations, I'll let you know when I'm passing, probably Suptember.

  8. Good decision to go on to Uppermill, much better place and near the centre of everything interesting in that valley. I know the new marina you mean. I have heard that it was a condition of planning consent for the developments around it but they don't actually want to deal with having boats there. This is not first hand knowledge.

  9. I don't seem to be having the best of luck. I moored last night about 300yds from the first bridge to be operated by BW. Set off at 20 past nine for the 9:30 start and noticed that all the other boats going today had gone. On arrival at the bridge I was informed it had broken and I couldn't go through. They knew about the problem yesterday and knew they could only swing the bridge once. So all the other boats went through early. I can't go. They say I was not on their list so didn't know to wait for me, but had seen my presence. Why wasn't I on the list when I booked about a week ago. Why didn't they walk 300 yds to inform me they were opening once only and doing it before the booked time. Why didn't they phone me, they should have the number. Where I was moored is well past the last winding hole for anyone not going down the link. There was supposed to be a fitter here at 830t do the repairs but he's gone to another job in the Peak District instead.

I have no idea when I'll be able to go and am completely pissed off.

Update. I have made a mistake. Having checked the booking form again it says 9:00 not 9:30. Oh dear. Still pissed off but now at myself. I'd been killing time for an hour.

  10. I am now at the beginning of the Liverpool Link and looking forward to the trip tomorrow. The return across the Ribble was "interesting" (more detail on the website". I was delayed at Rufford due to a fuel leek allowing air into the system, which took some finding. I also had time away visiting the Skipton Festival and the Banter there on the best weekend weatherwise so far this year.

Adding to the list of members met, on the Lancaster, Goosander and Ian West.

Skipton Festival, Steve Wilkinson, Jessica Boo, Alice No1, Ian Grindley and various partners. Have I forgotten anyone, feel sure I have so let me know.

  11. I came south across the Ribble a few weeks ago and there was doubt about letting us go due to the wind so we were borderline. I would say today was similar, but the forecast doesn't improve until Saturday. The Hesketh arms at Rufford is worth camping out in if delayed.

  12. Although I booked a mooring whilst at the Gnosall banter my plans as usual have come to naught. The booking I made is being passed on to Herbsacious (Happy Bunny) but her boat will be occupied by Benjt (Caprifool). I may get there in the camper. Is there anywhere handy to moor a camper van?

  13. Despite my reported problems this year on the Rochdale I would recommend that way if you've not done it before. It is one of the most spectacular canals (the other being the Huddersfield which is another option if not a widebeam and Standedge tunnel is one of the wonders of the system) The west side into Manchester is well worth putting up with for the trip on the west and over the summit. I had no problems with water shortages and it is easier going downhill on the west. I also thought the paddle gear was much better this year than previous years. I think Tillergirl only did the Rochdale 9 and then the Ashton. The 9 gave me no problems at all and no trips down the weedhatch. That only happened in Rochdale.

Unlike Dean I do know where Rufford is as that is where I am now, though leaving today if the rain stops.
