  1. I had a 4236 on a generator that spewed a large amount of diesel through the seal on the end of the fuel distribution pump shaft where it entered the timing chain chest it filled the sump in no time, probably different on yours but thought it worth a mention

thanks for replying all ideas worth investigating i feel like sherlock homes

Hi, It is worth noting that whenever an older type injector pump is serviced/reconditioned to make sure Dupont viton seals are fitted as they are designed to cope with low sulphur and bio diesels. Any reputable service agent will fit this type automatically, some will still be using up old stock,so be aware and ask!.I believe that any make of injector pump produced after 1998 is fitted with viton seals as standard.

thanks ill check that one out ive lost more diesel in sump and over £60.00 oil changes fresh oil etc id rather be cruising

The manual shows one so its a distinct possibility.

thanks ive informed the mechanic of this and he was going to check this out im desperatly looking on internet ive got a parts book and workshop manual on board but cant get there till next week but this seems a most plausible idea weve had as ive bought a new lift pump and still no change im excited about this and thanks for repling will let you no if indeed it has been the problem all this time.

I wonder if there could have been a spacer between the lift pump and the block, (as there is sometimes) this spacer was mislaid during the rebuild and now the lift pump is over stroking, destroying the diaphram in an instant, a bit far fetched i know, but it is an odd problem and even rare things have to happen to somebody!

i think you may have found my problem cant wait to get the boat back to the mechanic thanks i owe you one

  2. Being a Seamaster I assume its a Perkins 4-10X and if so have you tried it with the flame plug disconnected from the fuel system. Many flame-plugs seem to be pipes from the main fuel system and if it is a leaking flame plug will keep pouring diesel into the manifold. Personally I would fit a tap in the flame plug feed and only turn it on during cold starting (as we used to when they had the little tin bottles to supply the fuel).

hi yes its a 4108 and yes again we disconnected the flame plug feed so its not coming in there were stumped pre engine rebuild it never happened.post rebuild it pours in.

  3. ive had my engine totally rebuilt but still get diesel in oil any ideas this problem has taken a year of my time and constantly return trips breakdown back to the marina /mechanick ive had lift pumps injector pumps renewed injector would any body care to swap this seamaster 25 for a narrowboat our dream im at a loss with her but will get her running befor i sell or swap im serious my wife doesnt trust her and a women scorned etc so if theres any one out there with a heart and they want a virtually brand new boat some cosmetic work needed shes up for grabs or ideally swap so we can enjoy the canals of briton also brand new is the steering and waterpump so as you can see apart from hull shes in need of tarting up but a finer craft for some one who doesnt want to leave boating but enjoy the comfort of dry boating instead of cold wet boating and with room to enjoy comfort contact me and we can chat but getting back to my other problem please help!!! were at our wits end and want to enjoy a pleasurable cruise with our friends colin and jill not being towed back to the marina yet again

  4. hi i have a seamaster25 with hotwater drawn through a cholorifier when we turn on tap water comes through at a nice rate but slows dramatically to a dribble we think this could be the pump but unsure has any one suffered these problems i know the pipes arnt leaking as we have checked these for water loss hence no pressure so pressure drop also the pump doesnt seem to be starting its self up showing leaks in system.im at a loss this has been a gradule problem but being scared to look ive left it alone

  5. Not a Perkins, but when I had work done on a BMC 1800 a couple of years back, that although running fairly OK, proved to have several head gasket failures, as well as some significant cracking in the head.

Fortunately the engineer sold me a viable second hand head quite cheaply.

For quite a while after, we had periodic oily deposits coming out the exhaust, that were clearly diesel based rather than engine oil based.

I discussed it on here, and people came up with the names "slobber" or maybe "schlobber", and gave explanations of what can lead to this....

In practice, after a while, without taking further remedial action, it stopped, and has never recurred.

It is almost like a load of muck was now getting cleared out of the exhaust system that had been in there a while, and not blown out. Alternatively maybe an injector was in some way not functioning correctly all the time when put back in, perhaps because of some muck, or partial blockage, but managed to clear itself out somehow ?

Maybe either of those are fanciful explanations, I don't know, but it is right as rain now, so I have long since stopped troubling over it!

My advice is use it normally for a bit, and see if it goes away.

firstly thanks for advice secondly how do we vote for you.

  6. Hi Nick, I run a 4108 Perkins in my boat,I get my spares from parts4engines.com and have found them very prompt with their service. You can purchase a set of injector nozzles off them for around £70,they are easy to replace and calibrate if you know anyone who has access to a hand pumped "squeak tester". I would suggest getting the injectors tested first as they are adjustable being the "pintle"type. As you have had a rebuild,You may get a little blue smoke for a while until the engine beds in but dont be frightened to give it some hard work to do as this will help.As for diesel in the exhaust,it may be full of crud due to the previous problems you had with the engine,(again, working it hard will hopefully burn this out).

    Hope this helps,keep in touch,

    Geoff

thanks for the advice i will give her a long run at the weekend weather permitting and wife permitting (well someone has to do the locks!!) ha ha and see how she is then thanks for repliying and great advice. nick.

Quite right.A narrow boat with an Perkins 4.107 or 8 would in my mind be over powerful and therefore never under much load, and as we know all diesels prefer to be under proper load to run cleanly and efficiently and so can build up all sorts of fuelly goo in the exhaust which can ooze out at minor leaks.

  7. i have a perkins4107 that has given me no end of problems ive just had her rebuilt and new injector pump and lift pump fitted because i was getting diesel in the sump as a result of these being fitted im pleased to say no more diesel in sump but the engine although being run in smokes slighty blue in colur and were leaving a trail of diesel on water does any one no the cost and procedure of cleaning/calibrating injectors as these havent been done and im sure this is were the diesel is coming from but im open to suggestions please.
