  1. Pillings Lock is currently in the 'flooding possible' range according to the EA.

The Lower Level Soar (Cossington to Redhill) still has a flood alert on it.

How are you getting on Chris?

    Hi Ally

Still sat at Castle Gardens, about to phone BW and see if we can move. Have just seen a chap set off but he has had no advice so will see if he comes back

  2. Don't go through Belgrave lock until it is at LEAST happily in the amber, as there is a bridge just after that is very close to the roof if the water is up. Barrow has been on red for some time, except last thursday when it went green for 1 day only (and there was a mad exodus to Loughborough!) Be aware the sluice at Barrow boating is broken, so there is some risk of emptying out on the 'canalised' stretch between there and Barrow Deep, but hopefully that won't happen....more likely to flood over at the moment! C&RT are aware and having meetings to work out what to do to protect it!!

The other area to watch is around Normanton on Soar. If they shut the gates at Zouch, that can leave you having to moor on the emergency moorings in the middle of the river near Normanton.....not a happy mooring place IMO, so don't risk running the red light at Bishops meadow in Loughborough. If you reach Loughborough, give us a wave!

Thanks Ally your comments are very helpful.

We are now at the secure mooring in Castle Gardens, and all is red but dropping, with luck, if is doesn't rain today or tonight we might be able to make a dash tomorrow

  3. Hi anyone currently moored on the Soar between Kings Lock and the Trent.

I am currently tied to the railings outside Aldi at Aylestone.

What condition is the river in?

What are my chances of getting home in the next week?

    Info gratefully received

    Chris

  4. Just packing stuff onto the boat ready for the off tomorrow and my phone went beep and this e-mail arrived.

"Grand Union Leicester Line Kibworth Top Lock 18 - Kings Lock 38

Monday 2 April 2012 until further notice

UPDATE (09 May 2012): Due to improved reservoir holdings we are lifting the closure currently in place on this section of the Grand Union Leicester Line.

From Friday 11th May 2012 this section will be open daily between 9.00am - 4.00pm until further notice.

Locks 18,30 & 38 will be padlocked to ensure there are no abuses/unnecessary water losses.

We will continue to monitor the reservoir situation closely and if we get further improvements we may lift the overnight locking altogether."

Was going towards Fradley but plans might change at the last minute.

  5. To be honset, for me that was the downfall of the book. I got bored of reading about that damn dog - I wanted more details about the boating.

Vastly underrated dog. I think I will start a Jim Appreciation Society. Any takers?

  6. Thanks for the info everyone. I remember enough about Northampton to know the places you talk about but it has been at least 25 years since my last visit. Then Beckett's Park was a lovely place, after 25 years it could be the drugs capital of the town.

  7. You can transfer it at any time. There is a form with the license renewal, or you can do it by email to BW.

True you can fill the form in but BW do nothing other than make a note to send the renewal to a different address. I changed mine in July, after two months I contacted BW and they said they had noted my form but would do nothing until the licence renewal.

  8. 1970s clothes had built-in shrinkage which became increasingly apparent as the garments got older.

Ah that's the reason, and there was me thinking I was gradually turning into an old fat git!!.

Just proves you should not believe everything your wife tells you!

  9. If you time your visit for the second week in August you can go through your hippy phase all over again: several thousand other people will be!

Funny you should say that, I thought I had found my old Afghan coat but it turns out to have belonged to a much thinner bloke!

  10. Tell me about it - we are 45 feet long, or rather our boat is. But the concrete bank is only by the bridge and shop, the moorings between the narrow bit (ex-bridge I guess) and the lock have grass but also rings. Trouble is, there's space for only two boats there.

Our boat is also 45 feet long be we have long lines and sounds worth the stop. I have fond memories of the village from 30 or so years ago when I was going through my hippy phase. Would be good to go back

    Thanks for all the input

    Chris

  11. Hi All,

We have made the break and come May we are off on our first 3 month adventure on NB Tilly May. No agenda, no itinerary, just set off from Shardlow and head south up the river Soar and see were we end up. We have read all the guides but would love to now your favourite stop overs and why. We love food and beer and history so good food shops, pubs, and places to eat would also be appreciated.

  12. We moored at Barrow On Soar last night with a view to winding and doing back up the Soar as we met a number of boat with sorry tails to tell about the water levels between Kings Lock and Gees Lock and a chap who said it took him 3 days to get through Foxton.
