  1. Keira our Munsterlander is off at every lock, she is never on a lead because she is well trained so if you say sit she does and if you call her she will come. She crosses locks at will and never has a life jacket. She does have a harness with a D ring which only gets used if we are on a river so I can use a boat hook if she does fall in. She has only ever fell in twice, both times when she was new to boating. We would never be without her. We always have one eye on her and try to anticipate any potential problems and WE ALWAYS PICK UP HER POO!!

  2. Paying Council Tax is not just about rubbish bins. It is about local funding for Fire Services, Police, Parks, Play Areas, Adult Social Services, support for local small businesses so that local shops stop open, grass cutting of open spaces, street cleaning, community centres and much more. These are the things that help make a community a community. If you permanently live in a community and you earn enough to be expected to contribute to these things, what reason could you give to object? Everyone else in the community that can, does. Why not you?

  3. We are planning our next year cruise and have decided to go down the Trent and back to the Trent and Mersey via one of the Pennine routes. We have a list of pro and cons for the Leeds Liverpool, Rochdale and Huddersfield and still cannot make up our minds. I would like to here your experiences and preferences.

  4. Not the best summer cruise for us this year. First attempt - Shardlow to Alrewas - return home with ear infection. Attempt 2 - Shardlow to Fazley - water pump fails and empties fresh water tank into boat - Attempt 3 Shardlow to Welford (went clockwise had seen enough of Willington) - macerator pump failed had to leave boat and buy a new toilet (old pump obsolete). Only managed to do Leicester ring. The good news is the weather was great, the Ashby was wonderful and the people are a joy to be with. Next year will be even better

  5. Nobody in their right mind would put forward a business case to build and open a marina in the middle of a field. The only thing that would make the plan possible would be a link to a CaRT controlled resource. Without the link the marina is worthless. CaRT are responsible for the upkeep of the network so of course the business must contribute. How the business recoups the contribution is irrelevant. Connect to the network then pay. If CaRT have inherited some agreements that make no contribution I am sure they will work to correct this if and when they can.

  6. WE met this chap at Great Haywood last month.

He is a young homeless lad and sleeps under the bridge at night.

He helped a lot of people through the lock when we were there.

I never heard him asking anyone for any type of payment and he was

pleasant enough, if not a little smelly.

We also met this guy a couple of weeks ago.

He slept on the grass next to our boat (not before he ask me if I was ok with him sleeping close to my boat). He is homeless and probably lonely. I gave him a cup of tea in the morning and we had a long chat. He did not ask me for anything and was very polite. He did not appear to be on drugs and was not pissed. He did have a hi vis jacket tied around his waist, but at no point did he say he was a CaRT volunteer.

I have come across a few people helping at locks because they are lonely or have noting else to do, they are usually elderly and mostly nobody has an issue with them. Maybe this guy needs a bit of help and understanding.

  7. 3 points I would like to make

    1. Some CCers like myself can have a problem receiving their licence

2 CRT no longer issue a licences to boats making short visits to the system

3 people on benefits who pay licences monthly are not issued with a licence.

Because I am always on the move so licence catching up can be a problem.

    Fair point

  8. We often don't display an up to date licence , it does not at all mean a boat is not licenced and whilst technically a breach of the rules we don't stress over not doing it or if we happen to see a boat doing the same.

Why would you not display your valid boat licence?

  9. Like other I get a little bored of the CC issue. The issue that is increasingly apparent on the Shroppie, S&W, and T&M is the number of boats displaying no CaRT licence or an out of date licence, or a photocopy of a licence with no identifiable markings on the boat. These boats are obviously breaking the rules and need swift retribution!

  10. We were stuck for 4 days at Castle Gardens last summer when the Soar was in flood. We were one of eight boats moored up to three a breast on the pontoon. Had a mini boat festival, very enjoyable. The moral of the story is - Ask and offer boats to moor alongside, the more boats the safer you feel.

  11. How do you know the licence has a name and number on , i cant read my licence without getting real close up , its not something that you would be able to read if you were just passing by surely .

At a distance you can see if the licence has a name and number on it, it is too far away to read the detail but you can see it is there. Its a great way to get around the CaRT web page that enables you to check a boat is licences from its reg number.

I thought it is a requirement of the licence to display the boat reg number.

  12. Maybe I'm just a little slow but over the last few weeks I have started to notice more and more boats that used to have out of date licences now display a current licence but now have no name or registration number. Why is that?

  13. As of about 2pm today.

    1 Mountsorrel lock on amber

2.Barrow Deep Lock is red light but not chained

    3. According to nb Magpie Cranfleet flood lock opened this morning and they had come up from there to Barrow Deep Lock with no problems although some locks were red
