  1. Again I have every sympathy and its difficult to convey in written text but your priority must be to restore normality as its a pretty hopeless situation if no one witnessed whatever happened and you will tear yourself to bits going over it time and time again.

I know thankyou, may seem minor to some but I have limited money and I dont want to go spending what little I left in the 'pot' on damage to my boat when I have nothing to do with it....

I'd be curious to know which marina you are at.................

Ally Id be quite happy to tell you........

    REDHILL MARINA LTD

You may see the owner on his horse out and about or on a hunt or two, or maybe in his porsche....

  2. No laws as such - but it will be set out in your mooring agreement.

In a marina the owner or the company will have to accept responsibility or you will have to prove it was down to them or another boater - the former sounds very unlikely from what you have said and the latter would need a witness at least, or CCTV evidence, an unlikely prospect I would have thought. :(

Shit sounds like I gotta claim off my insurance then! bad when it was nothing to do with me!

I was talking to some owners earlier who used the same marina im moored up at to have there wide beam craned out, they said

''This is the worst marina we have ever been at, the only reason we are here is cos there the only marina to have a big enough 'crane' to haul us out the water, the toilets are disgusting (which I totally agree) and the owner turned water off because someone was washing there boat down, today she said now the water has been turned back on shes done 2 loads of washing and was going to to shove it all in her tumble dryer to make the most of it''

Oh by the way, the guy who owns the boat that damaged yours is about somewhere, as the marina owner put his boat back in the water a week early and tried to moor it over there next to yours....despute still going on regarding this as I speak..!!! I told her if she saw this guy to send him over to me today, but he never came :(

  3. Thankyou MJG - She's a Buckingham 25ft although some may claim she's a 27footer!????

What bad luck,I know its easy to say when its not my boat but it looks fairly superficial.

Trying to look at the bright side it could have been a lot worse. Working on the laws of probability your Mr Marina will be careful to make sure it doesnt happen to you again as lightening shouldnt strike twice in the same place. Best repair it quickly as it will wink its eye at you every time you look at it and that will only wind you up further

But what are the laws when your boat gets damaged whilst in moorings??

But yes your right must get it fixed otherwise I will pour the entire contents of my toilet over his head when and if I see him......thats how angry I am...and I doubt very much he will make sure it will happen again as all he has is pound signs in his eyelids!!!!

  4. Went to my boat yesterday afternoon, and look.....!!!!!!!!

When I left my boat in my moorings 2 weeks a go it was in perfect condition...went yesterday and this is what I saw, I confronted the marina owner (Complete and utter tosser!!) and he said to claim off my boat insurance, now I may be new to boating, but, my boat hasn't moved since I left it and it looks to me like the money grabbing marina owner has tried to squeeze in another boat along side of me and decided otherwise....coz it wouldnt fit!!!!

Not happy, totally peeded off, I AM NOT CLAIMING OFF MY INSURANCE as it was nothing to do with me, heard quite a few horror stories today and lots of people moving there boats elsewhere to other marina's to moor.

My neighbour said he would deny all knowledge, which he did, he couldnt organise a piss up in a brewery to be quite honest, told him nb also mooring up and 'stealing our electric' and his reply was ''Im sorry but we cant monitor all boats that come into the marina!!!!!'' I, well I cant repeat what I said but in other words I said its your marina surely you should know what boats are coming in and out!????????? I am absolutely fuming, my boat may not be the pretiest but its MY boat and my pride and joy....

  5. Just a quick question - Can I use my old sky+ receiver for my portable maxview satalite dish which Ive just bought second hand? I have been told I can but dont want to lug it all to my boat this afternoon if it does not

    Thanks

    Rachel

  6. Hi Deano and family,

Im so jealous, infact jealous of you all that live aboard. I got rid of my beloved camper to buy my boat but its far too small to live on, plus I wouldnt be able to afford it, could if I sold my house but then theres the problem of my daughters schooling, my job etc. Me and my daughter used to go camping all year round, people used to say we was mad as it had no heating whatsoever, ( it was a VW type 2 bay ) but we survived! Daughter used to wake me up at stupid oclock in the morning saying ''Mummy I want breakfast!'' I then lit the hob and told her to have another half hours kip until it defrosted the inside of the windows let alone warmed us up first :o lol ! Worked a treat though.

My opinion is you only live once so live it and enjoy it....

P.S You thought about where your going to stick your xmas tree up?? hehehe

  7. These days you get quite a lot of electrical equipment that use 240AC to low volatge DC socket transformers. Obviously if the appliance is 12v then it would be better to use a 12v cigarette lighter socket than to run the inverter & transformer. The exact voltage of the boat battery supply will vary between 14 and 11v anyway, so what range of appliance voltages can safely be run from the 12v supply? I presume that higher demands can be safely run but at some point won't draw enough power to function, but lower voltage appliances could blow. I know that you can run 18 volt laptops via an appropriate cable but that uses a transformer anyway.

All anecdotes regarding running appliances using a 12v socket welcomed.

I look forward to the advice thats given on your question too as I have often wandered this myself.....

  8. We bought this lead on E-bay in May, I'm using it now as we're in a bad signal area, the dongle is currently laying on the roof. We're stuck on dry land at the moment and our dongle only gets a signal through the porthole window on a nice clear day and even then it sometimes cut off. Since using this lead is we've managed to stay on line continuously, but on overcast days you sometimes get cut off, but will then reconnect. At least now I can sit comfortably and use the lap top whereas before had to sit at a desk directly beneath the porthole.

Big thanks to you all from me too! I was wondering how you all got on the internet off your boats. I do miss being on the internet when on my boat especially at night when theres nothing on tv.......

Off to buy O3 dongle with extension cable and will ensure I have an empty milk bottle and stick lol !!

  9. On the Calder & Hebble at Broad Cut Top lock a young man asked me if he could share the lock with us. I looked back but couldn't see a boat, then looked down and there was a small folding boat not much bigger than this one, with two other men in it, powered by a little seagull outboard. They were going as far as Stanley Ferry on the Aire & Calder.

I asked him why he didn't just carry it down the locks and he said it was harder to do that because there was a big drop down to the water above and below all the locks. So they accompanied us through the remaining locks, doing most of the work which was much appreciated by us. I omitted to take any photos though. I wish I had because it was quite bizarre.

Hahaha thats funny!! You shouldve took some pics though! thought for one minute you was goin to say they had a remote controlled one!!!

  10. Ray Cullis of Trent Boat Handling has an excellent reputation, and runs one/or/two day courses.

Based at Nottingham, he's practically on your doorstep

Ive been recommended this chap by several people for myself as Im very new to boating.

Must book a spot with him soon, as I know it might seem easy to you experienced boaters but what I cant get my head around is whether Im going upstream or downstream, and this confuses me especially when its windy and Im going to moor up. I just cant work out if its the wind blowing the front/back end out or the current underneath :banghead:

Enjoy your trip guys, my first outing was just me and my 9 yr daughter and we got back safely so if I can do it you will be fine.

Have fun and just take it easy.....

    Regards

    Rachel

  11. My old 70s Springer had one.

If you do find that your boat has a weedhatch make sure the engine is off and start battery isolated before you remove the cover. Moving propellors and hands do not go well together... Also don't forget to replace the weedhatch cover properly afterwards otherwise you may sink your boat.

I will be going to my boat at the weekend, so will have a look and take some pics of it if I cant find it. I'll make sure the keys are nowhere near the ignition and will isolate the battery. Just to add I have a really good neighbour where my boat is moored he's been every so helpful to me but he's not always down there at weekends, if he's there this weekend I will ask him if I have one.

Like I say I havent got anything stuck on the prop yet, so I really need to know what to do if I did.

Im very grateful for all your replies so far

    Thankyou

  12. Roxy

Weed hatches are a relatively modern thing. You should be able to dislodge most things with a short boathook. I suggest you have a prod around to get a *feel* of where the prop is and the best way to reach it. Then you will know what do do when you get a *bladeful*. A lot of times you can dislodge things like weed by a few short blasts in reverse and forward. Standing in the water to reach the prop is normally a last resort when all else has failed. Fishing waders can be useful for this!.

Going to have to do this at some point, Im a little nervous at putting my hands into things and it's going to be even worse if I cant see what Im touching! I have to wear rubber gloves even just to wash up lol.....do you think boating is for me? hahaha too late now anyway cos I love it and theres just no way of going back!

  13. We convinced our two children that it was a special treat to be allowed down the weedhatch, and they'd only be allowed to do it if they were very good all day. They were at least 12 years old before they realised they'd been conned!

Lol thats so cruel but funny at the same time!!

Are there any other Buckingham owners on here? 25' is short enough not to have a weedhatch

    Richard

    Richard,

I bought it as a Buckingham 25ft but I could swear it's a 28ft this one is for sale and is exactly the same as mine and they have classed it as a 28ft!!!!!!!!

  14. My boat is 1975 so I dont think it has one.

I was too busy on my boat to go and have a look at what the other guy was doing.

He didnt come back wet so god knows how he did it unless he had a weed hatch like yours julynian and got stuck in! lol

Many of the old carrier boats had no weedhatch. I've seen more than one owned 'diving' under the water to try to get stuff off the prop that a boathook would not shift.

Noway will I be 'diving in' I have a phobia of being in the water next to a boat hull, I'll just send my 9yr daughter in and promise her an ice cream when she comes back up  !!!! (only joking btw)

  15. Hi there,

I work for Royal Mail and have just spoken to my boss on this matter.

Apparently Royal Mail have stopped this due to fraud/security issues.

He also said that aslong as the parcel isnt special delivery/recorded and IF the post office AGREES to accepting your item/s then to put your name on it but the address of the Post Office you want it delivering too.

In other words dont let it go through the Royal Mail system.

If it is a valuable item and it gets lost then the only problem with what I have mentioned above is that you wont be able to trace it.

Hope this helps and sorry I cant offer you better advice.

    Regards

    Rachel

  16. I have a BCM 1.5 inboard diesel engine on my Buckingham 25ft cabin cruiser.

As a new boater I was just wandering if there was anyway you can get to the propeller without taking the boat out of the water? If I was to get something stuck round the prop how would I get it off?

I had a guy that had moored up temporarily that came running across the bank asking to borrow my boathook saying something was stuck round his propeller, he came back 30 mins later thanking me and that he had got the offensive item off - turned out to be a paper boiler suit! I understand NB have ''weed hatches''

    Any help much appreciated

    Thankyou

    Rachel

P.S Sorry to be a thicko lol

  17. No offence intended to Roxy, but I wonder how much of her trouble might have been panic from inexperience. When I first started boating I used to try to leave a boat width between me and any passing boat and I often got myself in trouble. I'm now happy to have our boat almost grazing the passing one and I hence have far fewer incidents.

    Tony

No offence taken, although can I just say I only started panicking when I realised I was stuck!

We all pay our river licence ( well most of us do, I have witnessed a few boats with licences well out of date already! but thats another story) so nb, grp or whatever boat you have you dont own the river or canal.......it is there for everybody's enjoyment. Since then, I have been down the Trent plenty of times and passed many boats on that same stretch where I got stuck and had no trouble since. But next time I will know better......

Thanks for your advice/replies so far much appreciated

    Regards

    Rachel

  18. Just going back to the original thread post lol, I am very new to boating, bought my first ever boat in June this year and absolutely love it as does my 9 yr old Daughter, anyway I had never driven a aboat ever but when I bought this I was lucky enough to be taught well enough the basics. My 'instructor' told me that you always keep to the right etc amongst other important stuff. On my very first outing dgown the River Trent I was confronted by a narrow boat coming the other way, so I kept to the right as I had been told and the nb just kept coming over towards me forcing me in the weeds!!!! I mean how wide is the River Trent!????????? I got stuck as I had nowhere else to go, unless I had cut him up and gone on his left then I could of avoided this. My daughter was crying I was in a panick but managed to get us both out after about 15 mins of struggling. The bloke who was steering the nb didnt even look at us let alone acknowleged us or even turn round to come and help us, maybe that was due to the fact that I was in a cabin crusier and thought he was above me and owned the entire river!!!!!!!

I reported this when I got back to the owner of the marina and he said that I should of took his boat number and that I still did the right thing by staying on the right.

I am learning new rules every time I take my boat out and have never come across a pig ignorant git like him since, everyone has been so helpful but like some of you have said you'll always get one!!

Sorry to have a moan for my very first post lol but we all have to start somewhere and like I said everybody I have met on the water have really been such a help to me, albiet through the locks, how to moor up, where to/not to moor up etc.

    Regards

    Rachel and
