  1. Well a lesbian acquaintance of mine went on a night out to canal street in manchester, and got very upset after some gay fellar walked past her and her friends commenting "ooo, can anyone smell fish?" There does seem to be some antagonism between gay men and lesbians.

I would like to point out that i'm not territorial and don't have any antagonism to any blokes gay or straight oh and i definitely don't go round slapping people, I can't vouch for the other half though Lol!

  2. Ah I see, so if that's been bent upwards somehow, then it'll be trapping the rudder making it stiff.

And if the rudder is out of the cup would it just be sitting on the skeg then? Or flapping about around the side of it maybe? which would mean it was being pulled down by gravity making it stiff?

 I am learning things and it didn't make my head hurt, this is good.

    Thanks all :)

  3. I always thought (from discussions on other forums) that Hebden Bridge was the home of the Northern lesbian, I've never visited, so cannot comment on the state of any boats, but i've always liked a bit of diversity (not the dance troupe).

  4. ok i don't know what cups or skegs are... (goes off to google it)

I have so much to learn.

There is no grease nipple though. It has been like that since i can remember.

The boat's being taken out of the water later this year for blacking so i'll probably have a look and do something about it then and just put up with it for now.

  5. www.canalworld.net Driver Error

There appears to be an error with the database.

I keep getting this error message, is it just me?

  6. So yeah I'm going to the IWA festival next week and my tiller is very stiff and moves in jerks rather than a smooth movement.

So apart from dousing it in WD40 (which is my prefered method so far)

Is there anything i can do to free it up or is there any common problems that could be causing this?

    Thanks all :)

  7. My lovely boat has very little in the way of original documentation, so i'm seeing if any of you can help me out with any information.

As far as i've been told she was built in 1999, and her insides were rejigged in 2009, so i'm assuming her BW number 519199 is from the refit and not her original number?

On one scrap of paper the builder was listed as stilton and belairs, which when i googled that leads me to believe that it was probably built by floating homes in peterborough? Does anyone have any info on that builder as i'm thinking that due to lack of web presence that they no longer build boats?

Her last name was Yamas and before that it appears to have been Silver Sky.

    Any info would be appreciated.

    :)

  8. The only bit of advice i would give you is -

I fell in love with a lot of boats online, but almost all of them, when i actually saw them, I did not like, descriptions and photo's can in no way beat going to see a boat.

Also i've dismissed boats i've seen online, but having seen them in the flesh, they're a lot better. (for example i never wanted a cruiser stern - guess what my boats got :) )

  9. You can get a grade 1 mooring at sawley marina, there are lots of live aboards including families with kids. They also do have a few official residential moorings, not sure if they've got any to spare but i guess you could ring em they're quite candid!

  10. well i'm living in a marina and apparently you have to keep your dog on a lead when it's not on your boat.

I have a big collie/german shepherd cross and i am constantly amazed by the amount of people who let their dogs run round willy nilly barking at other dogs, mine has been snapped at on a number of occasions and i have to hold my dog up while people run round trying to gather their dogs up.

It is a bug bear of mine, i hate to generalise but most of the dogs tend to be little yappy things and often in packs of 2 or more.

My dog is not perfect, which is why he stays on his lead, he doesn't show any interest in wildfowl though!

  11. This is an interesting topic. I wield the windlass and my other (female) half does the boat work, to be honest the 1st time we went on a boat I was petrified of driving it, so by default i did the locks.

Also i don't like the smell in the bottom of the locks - she doesn't seem to mind.

I do drive/steer the boat now, but i still don't like doing the steering in the locks.

We have commented to each other before how it always seems to be the women doing the lock work in general though.

  12. Thank you vey much all!

I'll have a look into getting the cam belt changed and keep an eye out for a haynes manual - i think i'll go see if ebay has owt to offer.

As to the gauges, no charging light only a temperature gauge, but i don't think the alternators working anyway, but that's another small problem!

There is a switch, but i have no idea what it does, its a basic on/off, i've flicked it in both positions and checked my tunnel light and it ain't that, and as all the wires are all red and all bound together i think i'm gonna have a problem figuring out what it does (if anything)!

    Thanks again much appreciated :)

  13. So i've been told my engine is a ford XLD 1.8l engine, that is pretty much all i know about it, i was trying online to look for some kind of manual for it but i seem to be getting nowhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Also the only gauge i have on my "control panel" is an oil temp gauge. could i add a rev counter or other things (i don't know what else you can have, i am in techy terms a noob)

    Cheers all :)

  14. Aye the locks are easy once you get into the swing of them.

I saw some people looking scared as canaltime trained them with their model the other day!

But i reckon if you hire somewhere half decent, you'll learn a hell of a lot, i can personally recommend canal boat escapes, based in barnoldswick on the yorks/lancs border, we hired from them and the people on the other boat had never been boating before, they took them through the basic boat handling and went through 2 locks with them too, very comprehensive.

  15. Although I'm currently based in Sawley, I was thinking of moving back up north, I miss black pudding, the stuff round here just ain't right!

Anyway back on topic - so i've been looking for some moorings round York, I've been finding that a lot of the marinas/moorings seem to be for cruisers not narrow boats. So does anyone know of anywhere that would accommodate?

Also some places ask for pics of your boat, just on principle id like to avoid snobs!
