  1. Yes my explanation could have been better Tony, thanks.

The display is not black without power and when i apply power it goes black. I have pressed the ribbon and cleaned connections and not had it change sadly.

I have emailed a local repair person to see if they can help along with the manufacturer of the board and BEP marine, who have been helpful in the past. It is 20 years old though and no longer available...

  2. Ideas and help needed with this please.

My BEP marine tank monitor has thrown a wobbler, the display is showing black.

I have turned it off and on again and it would normally boot with the logo and then show the display of the tank levels, but now it is only showing black from the start.

I took it apart to see what access was like as i had success changing the LCD of my VDO gauge. That was fairly easy as the display supplied had a ribbon and a clamp, this looks more fiddly.

Am i correct in thinking the fault is with the display?

If so can anyone decipher what those codes mean on the ribbon and point me in the direction of a supplier?

I don't want to bin it until i feel i have exhausted all possibilities.

    Advice welcome.

  3. Not helpful to the OP but my friend - who has the same engine and gearbox - when i mentioned i had a leak said:

Show me a PRM gearbox without a leak and i shall show you one without oil.

My leak was from the gearbox selector, new seal and it still leaked but less so! It also seems to find it's own level, so i fill it to the mark and then it drips a bit until it oozes, then stops. A drip try in place and no worries until the yearly oil change.

  4. Thanks Keith.

I am not going to test moorings policy at Windsor and Maidenhead by not paying during strong stream conditions any time soon...

I did refuse to pay at Wallingford when i was caught there once quite a few years ago. I just told the lovely lady who came to collect fees that i wasn't paying due to the strong stream conditions and that i would be happy to explain to her manager why. I noticed the next day there was no collection of fees for any of us stuck there. I had no idea if i was in the right or not, and to be honest, i still am none the wiser having read what Keith has posted. If i do get stuck however, i shall make sure it is at Henley!😉

That's because they aren't entitled to charge when red boards are displayed and neither is anyone else.

    Keith

Could you point me to where the legislation is that says that please Keith?

Henley have a clear online moorings policy where they say "no charges shall be made when the Environment Agency have stated the river conditions warrant red boards".

So I emailed Windsor and Maidenhead BC to find out what their moorings policy is as they have nothing online. I was directed to their representatives that run the moorings at Windsor and Cookham and they told me that they DO charge during strong stream conditions, which I was very surprised at. I just took it that the landowner could do what they wanted, but if you know different i would be interested to know. Thanks.

  6. TVM were nice but turned a blind eye to persistent overstayers leaving it to the EA to do any enforcement.

DE want their cut of fees plus any money they can make out of people they can "fine". They won't want to chase persistent overstayers as it costs too much, so again that will get left to the EA to deal with.

JB sums it up nicely for me, the EA should just do it themselves.

  7. Any of you heading to Shiplake lock for water will find the tap has been "vandalised" by the removal of the valve.

I didn't have a fitting to attach so couldn't get water.

Trying to report it to the EA is very hard. Andy (lockie) reported it on the 29th for repair.

I will now have to carry various fittings to go on waterpoints that may or may not be working.

Only a matter of time before this happened.

  8. If you have your boat tied tight to the mud weights you will find they drag. If you leave some slack they stay put and you shuffle forward and back before settling again...

It surprises me how little you need to hold a boat on a river with minimal flow. A couple of days ago i stopped by a bank of water reeds, threw a large loop of rope fore and aft around them and that was enough to keep us sat for the day. I was going to drop the anchor and pop out a weight but didn't bother in the end.

  9. With concerns over galvanic corrosion while being plugged into shore power, I would be inclined to leave the boat unplugged and leave the solar to do it's bit.

Even in winter there would be enough to keep the batteries charged.

That's what I would do if leaving the boat for a while in a marina.

  10. So, Abingdon is a nice safe stop for a few days. Plenty of town moorings plus EA above the Lock. If you want to see Oxford i would take the bus in from Abingdon, which is only 20 mins away. If not...

You could moor just up from Iffley lock on the left - EA Moorings* - it is surprisingly quiet. A 30 min walk into Oxford along the towpath and a pub very close, The Isis.

Above Osney Lock are the EA moorings as mentioned, handy for Oxford centre and the railway station.

I would stay on the river to Dukes cut, but i am biased as I grew up in Wolvercote and like to see it from Port Meadow.

    * Usual EA charges, free for 24 hours and a fiver for the next two nights. It might have gone up by 50p, it had in Goring.

  11. So as mentioned, Teddington is most likely your best bet to stop, it's quite a long layby so chances are you will be okay there.

One that might suit is Stephens Ait - a island about ten minutes further up from Teddington - the small boat club mooring on the upstream end of the island is yours free for 24 hours and surprisingly quiet. There is a pub opposite so may add atmos to your evenings viewing.

Kingston Moorings, as mentioned are your next best bet, Ten minutes or so up from Stephens Ait on your right. You will need to register arrival and pay.

There are other moorings but those will have you sorted. Internet and TV signals all good.

Richmond opens about 2 hours before and after high tide, giving you a 4 hour window. Journey time sub 2 hours - i do a bit further in 1hr30.

    Enjoy.

  12. I don't remember being able to buy pump out cards online, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

As OG suggests, you are most likely going to have to wait until you get to the lock to get one - If the machine is working or indeed there is staff available.

I have also heard that they are running low on the cards themselves and are having trouble sourcing a new maker.

Sadly, i suspect the helpline will be the exact opposite of it's name, but good luck.

Enjoy the Thames, it is lovely...in the main.

  13. FYI...Culham no longer needing to be closed for repairs.

    Dear boater

We are continuing to explore options to carry out further works at Culham Lock to ensure that the lock remains operational and safe for the boating season.  These works will be carried out without the need to close the lock to boat traffic.

Therefore, there are no closures planned for the week commencing 12 April 2021 at Culham Lock.

Please be careful when navigating through the lock and do not enter the fenced off area.

    Many thanks

  14. This is the latest.

    Dear boater

Our Operations Management and Waterways department have explored all options and have found a temporary solution to repair Culham Lock. We are therefore pleased to announce that the lock will be open for navigation for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Please be careful when navigating through the lock and do not enter the fenced off area.

We plan to carry out a full repair in the week commencing 12 April. The lock will need to be closed for several days in order to facilitate this. We will issue further information on this after the Easter Bank holiday weekend.

We wish you all a very happy Easter Bank Holiday weekend!
