  1. I haven't needed to use the online booking as yet and just had a look...hmmm.

We used to do Teddington to Limehouse in one but because of the 4 hour tidal window for Limehouse lock, we now split the trip over two days and stop overnight at Chiswick pier. The overnight stop allows us to have the ebb tide working fully for us both times.

I would still call the lock office (I presume that is still an option?) a couple of days before to confirm they have my booking, confirm my arrival time and see if they have a place on the wall for me, although i think that is becoming less of an option. Staying on the wall for a few nights on our barge was a cheap alternative compared to the marina moorings or indeed other marinas.

I will follow my passage plan according to the tides and timings for my barge regardless of what the bookings computer says, if that is an issue i won't bother...shame, as it is a great trip and we liked Limehouse.

Let us know how you get on Mr Magnet if you are the first to use the new system.

  2. Earlier this year i replaced some of my radiators with a new pair from that same company you are looking at... Well recommended.

I can't say if they will play well with your boiler but they do hold their heat and are a joy to look at.

Mine are on a barge and on either side so no weight distribution problems, but they are very heavy to move.IMG_20231030_162712_resized_20231030_042735337.jpg.761c53429a9029115dc2afdfead90867.jpg

Installation doesn't require any special tools, although a large adjustable for the end bushes will be needed.

I found a combination of PTFE tape and Fernox LSX worked well for the tails, the LSX only method recommended by the seller did not work for me.

I used chrome pipes for appearance but chrome pipes are not recommended with push-fit fittings (under the plinth in my install, tee'd off the main pipes) as they can slide out under pressure. I was able to stop that happening, but up to you.

  3. I am sure this is stating the obvious, but these chargers do go straight to float if the battery is full. I would run it down to a point where it def needs a charge and try charging via the gennie then to see what it does - which you probably have already done.

You can also turn off the "Intelligent start up" where it does the voltage check and then starts in boost whatever the battery voltage.

If you are going from landline to generator sources and the batteries def need a charge and this persists then I don't know, sorry.

  4. Hello all,

Just purchased a new Isolation Transformer and taken off the cover and found this. See pic.

I thought initially it was a capacitor that had spewed its insides out but now i think it may be some silicone? Certainly feels like that.

Can one of you experts cast your eyes across it and see what you think.

I have contacted the seller and am not able to test it by connecting to shore power... But i don't want to do that until the seller gives me the okay.

    Am i worrying unduly?

  5. Indeed, as predicted, every water point with the backflow device fitted is either: Adapted with a wrapping of tape; is removable to get to the standard tap fitting; or sat at the bottom of the river...

The Cat5 towers are at Cleeve and Abingdon. Not sure if they are a "success" as it has all gone quiet on their installation elsewhere. Still, it has been only 2 years.

Going up river on the first day found 3 lockeepers on most locks had to wait a few minutes at a small lock because of the 15 rule. Complete nonsense the whole thing as the larger locks let down twice the number of boats in the same time. Expect chaos at the weekend. Both the pump out and Elsan are out of action at Boveney due to repeated severe vandalism and not likely to be fixed soon. Lock steps are also lethal as covered in a lot of slime.

And don't forget some awfully slow filling water points.

  7. All excellent advice above.

All i would check with the OP is that Error code 2, which he says was triggered, in my manual is for a Low Voltage Alarm... Error 03 is for High Voltage.

The Smartgauge manual has a section explaining. It talks about high voltages from equalisation charges triggering the Smartgauge error code 3. It goes on to tell you how to defeat error codes 2 and 3, which is what i have done as my solar sets off the alarm.

As i say, check with your manual as mine may be a different version.

We have a Gardner 3LW with PRM 500 plus the soft shift unit. Gear engagement is almost unnoticeable.

Which soft shift do you have for my reference? The PRM one available at ASAP supplies or the accumulator version from Betamarine and others?

  9. This is all very interesting.

My PRM500 just goes from neutral to engaged in a blink and any slack (backlash?) from the drive means it sounds clunky.

PRM themselves even have a soft-shift to retro fit for these and i believe later models did have this on.

There is the accumulator solution available from Betamarine, but you are knocking on the door of £500...too rich for me. I found the original manufacturer but they too were looking at a fair wedge plus duties so i have left it.

Sorry to say no amount of gentle revs, easing, prayers or profanity works. Sometimes it just clunks.

Let us know what you plan to do Chevron.
