  1. Thank you for your replies. I think I will not be going ahead with this boat in spite of the location because for the price there are too many question marks about the boat. I don't mind some work but if it has been sitting in one place for a few years and needs a few thousand plus spending on it before it can move the 45000 wanted is too much for me. Thanks again
  2. (Thanks Bones, As for the blacking, the owner just said that 'it's due this year' i admit i should have taken more notice of dates etc, and i will contact with all the questions that have been raised. As for the wiring, as the boat is lived on at moorings with a power point I must admit at the time I never thought about the wiring, but thinking about it now, maybe the wiring is as old as the boat - 1988!, an issue I will definateley bring up. My optimism is quickly disapearing, as i'm realising it's so easy to fall in love with the look of a boat without realising the extent of the work required. (the main reason i think i loved the boat is the rural setting, attached to a farm overlooking the countryside, but then again we plan to tour the cut for at least 12 mths so that shouldn't be such a consideration). I'm just so keen to get started, partners pending redundancy and a job I hate seems to be the perfect time, unfortunately patience is a virtue I dont' possess.......!.
  3. thanks for the reply, I was definately going to get an out of water survey anyway, I'm relying on everybodys greater knowledge than i obviously have, am I looking in the wrong place to go for a boat that has not been 'cruised' on for many a year in the first place, or do you follow your instincts of what the boat looks/feels like and take it from there?
  4. Hi everyone,, Spent the last couple of months viewing potential boats, went to view one this weekend that i was really impressed with. It was a 57 foot trad (with poss mooring), the owner has been living aboard for past 10 years with the boat not having 'moved' for quite some time. the overall look of the boat was fantastic, could really see myself living on it. But don't want to rush in, the owner was very good at pointing out problems, ie need new chimnney stack, not such a problem. Engine started first time, sounded good but that's all I know about engines!. The top paintwork had rust showing through, how big a job is sanding down and repainting? The owner was willing to 'negotiate' with price for jobs that need doing but I'm not sure how much I would actually be taking on, would it be worth going straight for the survey? or should I run a mile now as I'm not particulary handy and the jobs may cost too much to consider. ANY ADVICE would be most welcome. Thanks in advance Lucille.
  5. Currently I live in Bury. Redundancy beckons the household and this godsend forces the life change we have discussed for a long time. Anyway, abroad or England? As my partner hasn't passed his RYA yachmaster courses weare stuck with inland water so travelling the canals of England cannot be bettered. Our first step is to find a boat with mooring, and if possible move onto it. It must be within an hour of Manchester by car if residential and preferably Lancashire or West Yorks. In the future we would like to be in Lancashire - maybe on the Bury / Bolton when that wonderful residential mooring gets built!!
  6. Thanks Liam I nearly bought a 70' with mooring a couple of years ago at Todmorden for only 30k but wasn't quite ready for it. Looking at current prices I made a mistake I think although that boat may have had a big hole in it for all I know cos I didn't get as far as a survey. seemed a good one and had a shed too! If i could find that today...
  7. Not surprisingly I have been there already. Are you from a Lancashire mooring or Cheshire? If it is bad form to post until you get a mooring I apologise profusely
  8. Hello everyone Very informative and friendly place this and after a bit of lurking I am posting for the first time - looking for help of course My partner and me are planning on buying a boat in the next month or three but need a mooring, preferably residential, in Lancashire. Hopefully the boat (50ft plus) will have a mooring but if it doesn't do any forum members know of any good locations (or boats) in this area? Obvioulsy I have done some research but the views of the experienced are always better than the open eyes of the blind. We hope to start a long term cruise later in the year and maybe pay up the mooring to reserve it until next year to live there. Thanks for any advice Lucille
