  1. I'll keep saying this, CRT do not want boats on the canals. If they could get rid of boats without having to worry (do crt worry about anything?) about the 15,000 or so people who live on the canals they would do it tomorrow IMO. I'm off the canals now but was only ever a liesure boater. I look after someone else's boat and I get the use of that occasionally but she pays. I had an enjoyable 10 years but I'm so so glad that I am in bricks and mortar.

I think if I was a vlogger, and wanted to draw traffic to my vlog, I would probably hang around here, making the odd helpful contribution, getting the lie of the land, (many the vast majority of whom are miserable old curmudgeons, very set in their ways, who will give short shrift to a whippersnapper promoting a vlog), and proceeding accordingly.

Nobody likes to be "sold" anything these days, particularly on internet forums, and some are very vocal in their rejection and discouragement - Question: "Could you be any ruder?", Answer: "Yes! What would it take?"

In order to introduce my vlog, I would wait for an issue/problem that one of my vlogs might help with, and only at that point, refer to it. Do this enough times, in a helpful way, and maybe you catch a few subscribers. I might even refer to the timings of the bit that helps, so as not to take up too much of the potential viewers time.

I follow a few vlogs on a variety of topics, but only found them because I was searching for help with an issue, and I only follow them because what I found was interesting, and presented in a way that I like.

  3. As Bengo says the bladders do fold and can crack. The one we originally had on the boat, long before we bought the boat, was nearly twenty years old. There were no leaks in that one BUT the inside was nearly completely covered in algae. I bought a new bladder from Thorne chandlery and promptly punctured it on a protruding screw when I was pushing it back in and that was through the canvas cover. The internal bladder cost around £40 back in early 2019. I didn't need to replace the canvas but the canvas does significantly add to the cost. I have put wooden battens around mine to try to reduce the folding effect when it empties but to be honest if it lasts another 20 years it will outlast me and probably CRT......Oh and I certainly wouldn't entertain joining bladders. A rigid plastic or stainless tank is a much better option if you have the room and the money.

  4. We have a 200 litre Plastimo water bladder with canvas cover on our boat. It does stuff in quite well into confined spaces. They are not stupidly priced although the canvas cover is more expensive than the bladder. We got ours through Thorne chandlery who are distributors for Aquafax. We have the long thin one but there are other shapes but with less capacity.     https://www.aquafax.co.uk/products/plastimo-water-tank-spare-inner-bladder-for-p16656-p16663

If you do decide to get one make absolutely sure that there are no errant screws projecting into the compartment that is going to house the bladder.   We are not livaboard and our boat is purely for leisure. I don't think the bladders have enough capacity for a livaboard. I do not know whether bigger ones are available but hard plastic tanks do come in bigger sizes.

  5. Yes it should be glued in and, usually the rope comes with the glue or at least the place you bought the rope from should have given you choice of buying the glue with the rope. Whichever it needs to be glued in with the correct glue otherwise it WILL fall out.

  6. I cannot see why any of you think it's any uglier than every other narrow or wide beam boat on the system ESPECIALLY those with all the junk in the world stored on top. The only difference is the extra high bow which I will admit doesn't do it any favours but that is easily removed. All narrow boats are just a box on a hull. Absolutely nothing about any of them that is particulary pretty or out of the ordinary. They are designed to travel on narrow waterways and the term "sewer tube" is appropriately apt for ALL narrowboat style boats.

Now this IS a pretty boat.................images.jpg.32870e967ca971f4b87bf97ecdba21c9.jpg and no it isn't mine, unfortunately.

  7. Don't forget that a BMC 1.5 is a big old heavy lump. It might be a good idea to have some sort of compensatory ballast handy to replace the weight loss when the engine comes out. Barrels, those big blue ones, have been used by others. Depending on what ballast weight you have in the bow and what ballast weight is adjusting the sideways list it could have a detrimental effect when the lump comes out. Probably nothing to worry about but better to be prepared just in case.

  8. I thought the reason was because that is where the vast majority of the controversial posts were argued out. Some members didn't want to see the thread titles and/or didn't want the temptation to look at the argumentative threads. So it was made a members only place which means that you would need so mant posts before you could view the content and the thread title wasn't shown on the main page unless you were logged in. Make of that what you will. As said it all seems a bit pointless but there ya go.

  9. Just now, Tracy D'arth said:

I have gazed long into my crystal ball but cannot see your engine or a breather pipe.

Is it a secret or do you think that members of this forum are all psychic?

Not being unpleasant but give us a chance, describe the engine make and model, even go mad and post a photograph if possible.

I do see that you are at home with your slippers on so that may be difficult.

I suppose the fact that it was posted in the BMC forum went over your head. Don't EVER answer any of my questions. Although it's not likely that I would ask any questions on this forum after a similar sort of answer a few years ago from another "expert."

  10. Whether you get Hexagrip or Buffalo make sure it is genuine. I bought what was described as buffalo board from an Ebay seller. Itwas a Chinese knockoff and it lasted less than a year. Marine ply seems to be very difficult to get hold of these days. Most wood merchants supplying WBP and saying it's as good as marine ply, it isn't. As said ensure the edges are very well sealed.

  11. That looks like an adapter and whoever fitted it has left the four inch (assuming that is the diameter of the flue pipe) and just sat the flue pipe on top. this would have meant a microscopic amount of sealer would have been used and now that sealer has broken down. If the adapter had been cut down to the next step and the flue pipe then fitted there would have been enough gap to wedge in the fire rope and a good squeeze of high temperature silicon on top. Obviosly that cannot be done as the flue pipe is too short.

  12. It looks like the clowns at Firefox have messed it up again. I cannot see posted videos using Firefox, specifically the "River Trent animosity" video. It all works fine in Internet explorer. Don't know about Chrome. That's even worse than FF so I don't have that on my computer. No doubt the FFPTB will withdraw their fingers and all will be well, eventually.

  13. The problem with holidaying on the canals is the speed. I know that there are enthusiasts on this forum, and others, that like and positively enjoy the peace, tranquility and the slow life on the canals but believe it or not those people are a tiny tiny minority when it comes to the holidaying public in this country. Most want to get on a plane, fly to foreign climes to put their hard earned into foreign pockets. Throw copius amounts of Sangria down their throats and get a suntan. It takes me two days to get from the Selby Canal to Goole harbour by narrowboat, 15 miles and 20 minutes by road. . Okay I can do it in a day but that is a long day. Also it is hard work (especially at Beale lock and Bank Dole Lock) compared to flying off to foreign lands, not that I do that to be honest. Standing at the back of a boat in all weathers. operating badly maintained locks, having to put up with fishermen and louts on the towpath etc etc etc. It's just not most people's idea of a relaxing sun soaked holiday.

  14. The problem with ignoring political threads is that threads outside the politics section can and do degenerate into politics. I have been guilty of that ONCE and I had a mod on my back for it. My post was hidden and even though I received an apology my post was not reinstated. It would seem that the "clique" on here can get away with things that us "mere mortals" cannot. Mere mortals get a rap over the knuckles like little schoolboys. Perhaps if the moderation was a bit fairer and a bit more, seemingly, unbiased then things would be a lot better. Unfortunately the moderation of this forum, and others, has always been an issue. In fairness to the mods, whilst they may be able to please some they will not please others. It is a thankless task which is why I wouldn't contemplate taking it on. I don't post much on this forum (or any other for that matter.) That is partly because MOST of the stuff I do I am able to do, although my way might not agree with someone else's way, but the other reason, and this is the biggy, is that if I ask a daft question, and I do occasionally, inevitably the respondent tends to get narky or even agressive. I have had that happen to me on more than one occasion even by someone who should have known better. I know I am banging on about this and people are, probably, getting fed up but I do feel aggrieved at my treatment whilst others are left alone to voice whatever opinions they feel like in or out of the politics section.

  15. If you use any paint at 2 inches away from the sort of heat it will quickly discolour and peel. I do agree that water based paints are crap. I try to avoid water based like the plague or in modern parlance covid 19. Hopefully, assuming we ever do fully get out of the EU, we can go back to using oil based paint although in the fairy, snowflake society we now live in that is highly unlikely. Personally I would retile it.

  16. My first boat was a trad stern 30 footer and the cabin space was adequate. before I go on I have to say that I am not a live aboard and I wouldn't live on a boat in a million years no matter how big it was. Anyway, then I bought a 20 foot Shetland 4X2, yeah right no way in the world. Not only would have six people on that small boat been way too many a plastic cruiser on the canals designed to be on the sea and moving at 8 to 10 knots just didn't work at 4 knots max even though some on here will say different and other plastic boat owners do not stick to the 4 knot rule anyway. I now have a 30 foot cruiser stern and the size of the cabin area is significantly reduced and I mean significantly. Okay for me it is not an issue but as a live aboard, absolutely no way. Oh and as for rain getting into the engine compartment. If it's sealed properly with the right sort of cover and the gulleys are kept clear that is not an issue even without a pram cover.
