  1. Apologies everyone, it was certainly not my intention to open a can of worms or indeed waste anyone's time. @ Wiltshire Moonraker - the photo of the alternator was the only one I had to hand and although not the current alternator in the boat (which had been replaced like-for-like – the new one is black but the same casing and connections), in my ignorance I thought it would be relatively straight forward to identify it. Perhaps in hindsight, I should have waited and posted actual photos. However, I have already learnt a lot from my original post. Which is the point of the forum isn’t it? @ churchward - it is indeed a BV1505 in glorious red paint, the majority of which is still on it. It always makes me smile when I call Beta for spares and they ask for the serial number. They always reply "Oh, that is an early one". I understand it to be a 70amp alternator and I do have a sterling battery device that might explain the other wire? Perhaps it would be useful if I took a few more details photos to close this thread out. I would like to thank everyone for their comments so far and apologies again if I have wasted anyone’s time.
  2. Hi I had the same problem getting oil for my 15 year old Beta engine which also requires CC. I tracked down Exol Lubricants that still do a CC grade oil named Classic. It is available in 10w/40, 15w/40, 30w and 40w. Look here http://www.exol-lubricants.com/find_produc...p?CategoryID=43 and scroll down for the Classic oils. If you look at the Exol News page they claim to use waterways to move their oil around. When I last bought oil a couple of years ago I got a 25 litre barrel from Gold Crest (http://www.goldcrestoil.co.uk) for around £65 I seem to remember. Thier website does not mention Exol but they may still do it. I contacted Exol at the time to ask who stocked their oils. From a storage point of view, the barrel lasted 5 changes for me and the oil looked ok to me!
  3. Hello All Is there such a thing a stupid question? Does anyone know how to tell if an alternator is right or left handed please? A link to a photo of mine is below: http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php...si&img=3291 I am planning to buy a spare and believe it to be the bog standard Lucas A127 that needs to be with an insulated return. Thanks.

  5. Hi I am new to this forum and this is my first post, please be gentle with me... I've done a search before posting and could not find a similar thread. Apologies if there is one and my searching skills are not currently up to scratch. I'm sure there is no standard answer, but do boat water systems tend to have one or two water pumps please? I.e. one for cold water and one for hot. The reason for my question is that I can only seem to find one on my boat and was considering sourcing a (cheap) spare for that just-in-case moment! Alternatively, does anyone have any good ideas for making do when a water pump fails please? Thanks in advance for any replies.
