As it says in your wikipedia link, it's an American measure of the maximum current (in Amps) a cable or machine will tolerate without damage. Power consumption and Amps are NOT the same thing. All manufacturers of any sort of electrically powered equipment give a maximum input power rating -- usually in Watts or Kilowatts -- there will be a figure for that available from them for your air-con unit.
