We have the opportunity of spending 3 or 4 days on the eastern section of the Kennet and Avon next week, and would welcome any advice from forum members as to places to visit, pubs not to miss, good places to moor etc - along with any necessary navigational tips. I know every twist and turn of the western sections of the Kennet and Avon - having been brought up in the village of Winsley, just above Avoncliffe and Limpley Stoke. This year we have the opportunity of exploring the eastern end. We're planning a handover of our 'share boat' on the Thames near Reading at the week-end and plan to be back at Oxford for Easter week-end, before returning north up the southern Oxford. We'd be grateful of any suggestions or recommendations. Love peaceful and tranquil places, but with the Western Region main railway line alongside - guess I'll have to brush up my loco spotting knowledge.

Hi there, We're planning to sell our house and take a couple of years out before we get locked down to school with kids. We're hoping to buy a boat, preferably a Dutch-style barge capable of being piloted across the Channel. We would stay on the Kennet and Avon near Bath / Bristol for the winter before heading to the European canal network in the spring. I'm struggling to get to grips with what is actually a realistic beam size for this - within reason, we want the biggest boat we can manage on the K&A but there seems to be a lot of conflicting info about what you can actually take from Bath - London. I understand the theoretical 13ft 10in is perhaps not possible because some lock gates don't open fully and the edges of the canal channel are very silted in places. But I can't find any solid info anywhere about what is actually a realistic beam! We're looking at something like 65ft - 68ft in length to give us a few feet leeway. I know the European canals are much larger and I imagine that if your boat is too small it would quite intimidating over there, besides the fact that we want space for the kids (we'll have an infant and a 3 yr old). Any advice would be welcome - also if anyone has any tips on boats for sale - obviously we're looking on Apollo Duck etc Many thanks for your help Kind Regards Emma

Hi everyone, I currently live in a small village near the Kennet and Avon and Devizes. I have considered buying a boat for a great many years but my partner was always opposed to this. Due to our possible relationship breakdown, I am now seriously considering living on the canal. Having 2 fairly mature children I would like to stay close and help both them and my partner, trying to remain good friends if at all possible. The workshop for my Antique Restoration business is based at the family home and I nead to remain relatively near to this. I am not under any illusion as to the difference between summer/winter boating. Before I (hopefully only proverbially) "jump in", I desperately want to spend some time living on a boat. Does anyone know of an owner wishing to go away from the canal anywhere around this area (10 ish mile radius of SN10 3LF) in the next month or two? I would be flexible regarding times/dates etc. and want to have to do all the usual mundain chores required for living on the canal. I have some experience of narrowboats as far as steering and so on are concerned. I am responsible, clean, tidy and respectful of others' property. I can give references if required, including one or two from boat owners if need be. Please don't misunderstand this request; I'm trying to gain some experience before changing my lifestyle, I'm not running away from anything, not depressed, non smoker (recently reformed) and life is ok for now but I need to make a change. I hope someone can assist and look forward to hearing from anyone with ideas. Regards, Richard Powell
