    Seriously though. If you choose an area that's not popular, what's the problem? Isn't it a bit like doing 35 in a 30 limit, or maybe declaring that 25% of your diesel is for your motion when really, it's 50%?

    The bottom line is that Cart's radar is much improved over past years and it is no longer just monitoring honeyspots. All boats have to move every two weeks at least, end of.

    Yes, I wonder why some people always seem to automatically side with the villains in these situations and try to portray them as "vulnerable groups" who are being picked on by the authorities? Perhaps they think they're on the side of the oppressed, but If we truly believe in community and social justice then society cannot allow a minority of anti-social elements to impact on the local community. The rights of the majority not to suffer from such people must take precedence.

    Minority, Equality, Diversity and Human Rights legislation are meant to support Davids against Goliaths for the greater good. Whilst the saying that 'prison is full of innocent people' may not be an idictment of the criminal justice system it has often got things wrong and people do plead guilty as advised for lesser sentences when innocent. I do not think even the issues in this thread can be seen as black or white, an open mind is needed IMHO.

    Oh really? Do you know what they were charged with in the end? Am I empathetic to the fact I help pay for that? I don't know what they were sent down for, so I don't know how I feel about them being in prison.

    Having read the Boaters' Update then having read this thread which I had previously ignored may I commend you for doggedly taking a somewhat alternative stance and balancing the "discussion".

     

    I think the Boaters' Update article has been purposely written as a sort of warning that will backfire if it turns out to be misleading etc

  4. Capacity would relate to surface area.

     

    Starter batts that have to put out large currents need thicker plates that won't distort under load.

     

    Modern batts use other metals in the lead to lighten them and to reduce gassing to permit them being sealed or low maintenance

    It went back to 13.8volts

     

     

    The fridge spends about 5 minutes on and about 10 minutes off. My main worry is it causing damage to the battery charger with the charger turning on and off while the fridge compressor is running.. Could it be knackered batteries as to be honest I'm tempted to replace with cheaper ones incase I have to replace the undercounter 12 volt fridge with freezer compartment with a 240 volt one for £137.00

    Sounds to me as though the friidge is fine doing its job in hot weather, but the batts have little capacity and hence are reliant on the charger to augment sooner and more often.

  6. not been on the macc yet but will be in the next few weeks, this is the reason we carry a strimmer.

     

    To be fair to the contractors/CART they get hassle from some boaters for strimming near boats at the moorings but the run up and down with a lawn mower is usually followed up with some strimming eaither side. Growth is at its maximum and is endeavouring to flower/fruit at the moment.

    When growth is left adjacent to my moored boat I usually get the shears out and lower it a bit. The boat ahead of me is using the nettle growth to protect his soft canopy and entrance I think so I have not extended too much beyond my boat.

  7. ok looking at 4 bank batt. Again i still wonder why I cant use ethier post of pos. Or neg. Each one should have the same volts and amps.

    It is good practice to take the power off battery banks from diametrically opposite positive and negatives of the battery bank; It better balances the discharge and charging of the batteries stopping one from doing more work basically.

    You will be loosing about 30 watts per panel with that 4v drop in voltage.

     

    The potential to loose 30w through a 4v drop is ameliorated by MPPT but I have not found it possible to to achieve a 30% return with MPPT on a modest 12v nominal installation over MPW

  9. My understanding is that the potential gains are lowest if you are using 12v nominal panels, better for 24v and a neccesity for anything above.

    The chaeper MPPT controllers usually are not so you may as well get a good spec MPW.

    You have to pay seriously more for a good MPPT.

    I prefer 12v panels for boats & sheds and am with you in thinking more panels rathen than trying to squeeze more out of the panels with an expensive MPPT.

    However, many do not see it that way so it's a case of personal experience/choice

    I got this 12 v car usb connector for £3.00 off ebay and connected it to a 12 v wall socket. The led on the charger itself lights up and the Galaxy Note does say "charging" but the charge plevel went DOWN from 48% to 44% while I left it on for 10 minutes? Any ideas why this thing is not working?

    Many usb suplies are only 500mv or less which sufficed to slow charge many basic phones. Smartphone & tablets are more demanding and can handel 2/3 amp of charging. If the wifi is on and its not on standy by my quess is that your phone was using more power than the electronic usb wizardry was producing.

    I dont belive I have expressed an opinion on RMP

     

    I remember the last time the linear moorings / delay question was asked it led to BW introducing the reduction in LM policy because people had answered that they didnt like the delays caused by having to slow down.

     

    I would have thought that it was not just local boaters who should be surveyed since others have a view and there is talk of using it as a pilot for nationally. However, I accept there has to be agreement with those directly and immediately affected first to see if it's a goer.

  12. The other way round you want the plates just covered and plenty of space. Overwatering dilutes the electolyte too much so it is a bit of a compromise. You do not want the plates exposed next time you check them so it is about gaining the experiece at guaging it.

     

    By the time you have your panel connected you are likely to find the situation regarding the voltage at the controller reversed with an emf gradient along the cable to the batteries. Regardless, I would just keep the difference in my head. I do not think the meter is involve in the control electronics of the controller affecting its performance. It is a better indication of battery condition than the traffic light LED's of the even cheaper ones

I think it is being led by a few Hire Boat companies,Marina owners,boat club Commodores and owners of nice homes next to the canal.These people don't want their fantasies and idealised view of the Cut being destroyed by tramp boats lined up in their domain.Most regular boaters don't give a damn,I know I didn't.I have been actively and noisily putting my views about roving permits and zoning to CRT for some time now,I posted on this forum last year on this idea and it was shunned by most.

     

    Go on then, air your views on this Roving Permit pilot then. I have changed my mind umpteen times on whether I am for or against it mainly in trying to figure the likely outcome and affect on those not originally to be affected, etc

    Indeed, it went further than that; you claimed that even people who paid voluntarily despite not being required to, were freeloaders if they asserted anything like this present post of yours.

    I thought he was saying that though he paid for his moorings there was no permit attached which he could stick in a porthole; You only get a piece of paper when the mooring is diraectly with CaRT/BW?

  15. I'm afraid what Mr Dodd said is a matter of parliamentary record and, as such, may be treated as 'legitimate expectation' unless anyone can show evidence of a contrary view.

     

    I am in the camp that thinks that is good and means that Bona Fide Navigation does not mean what it is portayed as in the arguments regarding CCing

I agree that permanent bridge hopping is not what I want to do and gets many exercised on here (a marina mooring suits my purposes at the moment) but if some one wants to move up and down a section of the River Lea or the London canals I'm cant see why that isn't bona fide navigation even if many including CRT would like a different definition. The problem in some areas is the sheer number of boats and I'm not sure that RMP's address this although it should free up some Visitor Moorings for those who wish to continue to CC.

     

    As CRT seem intent on introducing a "no return" rule i am sure things will get more difficult for those whose travel pattern does not fit in with the pattern that CRT would like to see and this will in time create its own problems unless challenged.

     

    Having first seen some logic in Roving Permit introduction I am coming round to having difficulty in seeing what they resolve.

     

    I think I have picked up that having a Roving Permit means that you cannot use short term visitor moorings which is why you say it might free up some VMs. Is that what all this is supposed to be about?

  17. This assumes that the 14 day limit is not the test for 'bona fide navigation'.

     

    Whilst NBTA have produced evidence that suggest it is, CaRT have failed to produce any to suggest it is not (apart from suggesting what is quoted is selective).

     

     

     

     

     

    Methinks those that move at least fortnightly will not expect to have to purchase a Roving Permit to continue to do what they have lawfully done hitherto. Those that have failed to move at least fornghtly are hardly likely to move more having lashed out on a Roving Permit. Or am I missing something?

    If I wanted to keep REGINALD hanging around in say, the Braunston area permanently, I could not do it by declaring myself a CCer. I CAN do it however by having a home mooring, and I could also do it if I had a Roving Mooring Permit covering the Braunston area (were there such a thing).

     

    A Roving Mooring permit counts as "a place where the boat may lawfully be kept" for licensing purposes. This is the whole point of a Roving Mooring Permit, I believe.
