  1. So less sunlight gets through, the surface is therefore cooler.

Global warming leads to colder weather.

The theory is that global warming would lead to much warmer weather very rapidly if it weren't for the effects of particle pollution and aerosol gases causing a counteracting dimming effect.

I realise that Wiki isn't definitive but here's their piece, and there's plenty more if you google it. BBC's Horizon did a feature a few years ago, try a search for that. I think it's a frighteningly plausible theory.

  2. Surely if you sit on an island next to a big sea, one of the predictable effects of global warming is increased evaporation and more energetic weather systems. Hence more frequent heavy rain and other precipitation.

    Richard

Unless I am wrong of course.

Wrong, evaporation is actually down as less sunlight is getting through to the surface, it's called Global Dimming and nicely counteracts Global Warming.

Now if we stopped air traffic and particle emissions we'd be totally phukd!

  3. And why should you? The Moley

I am only THE troll, who is probably wrong in what he reads and how he interprets it on here yet again hey?

Well come along to Calf Heath this Saturday and get a better impression.

Opinions do change when you've met another member and got a better idea of what makes them tick, or their brand of humour. For example, I admit that I was wrong and misinterpreted Yoda, I could be completely wrong about you.

(I've just seen Alan's pic when I've Previewed Post, where's my neck gone? I look rather Silurian)

  4. At this point we have the following confirmed attendees:

    Myself

    Cheshire~rose

    Keeping-up

    And your good self.

Thanks for the new clicky Dave, I'll take your word on the improvements.

I have to say I'm slightly underwhelmed by the response at the moment, come on people, this is an open invitation.

  5. Sorry to be dense but neither the link map in Rose's post or Stuart's waterways map will open on my Mac at w**k.

Dave, you say this is ON the S&W, is this the bar and restaurant at your marina or some other place just within spitting distance?

Also, what's the latest on who's likely to be there?

  6. Sorry, we kind of assumed that people who's pictures have appeared at previous banters wouldn't object this time.

Didn't mean to upset anyone, honest

    Whose

There have already been quite a few bad or embarrassing pics (and one video) of myself posted on this forum already and I think I behaved myself at this banter so I would raise no objections.

I'm sorry I missed the photos before they were edited out, can you PM me a link to an album?

I won't dignify the troll's comment about how people can come across on the forum, other than to say that these banters are publicised well in advance and are open invitations for any member to come along, the more the merrier, it was good to put a few more faces to names this weekend, or to get to know a little better one or two I've previously only met briefly.

  7. The bar area is not overly large but a fair size and we filled it, when I say we I don't mean 'we' I mean all the forum members that were there. (20+)

No disrespect intended but it was probably just as well that you left at closing time and went home, the banter continued for a while on NB Bones, I think we had 14 on board and the front deck was already awash with the drainage holes right on the waterline, a couple more and we'd probably have sunk her.

Thanks Bones, I think a good time was had by all, and thanks again for the bed (although I did say I'd probably be home by the time anyone else was up). Hope you have a good day boating with Alnwick.

  8. But why is it if a bloke moors his boat in a tree it's obviously a very windy day, whereas if I so much as bump a bridge on a tight turn, it's cos I'm a 'woman driver'?

In defence of 'women drivers', while going ahead of our boat to the next lock (going up the Stratford, I think) and finding the bloke (coming down) taking rather too much time over it, looking back down the canal he noticed our boat diagonally across the canal and passed some adverse comment about Mrs. Mole's helmsmanship.

I hastened to point out that she was really quite competent at the tiller and was merely picking greengages while he was fannying about.

Sure enough, by the time he exited the lock, our boat was out of the bushes and on a perfect lock approach.

  9. I think it's coming back to me now, I parked close to The Boat (the road runs parallel to the towpath?) then went in the pub but found no CWF banterers. Realising it was probably the wrong pub (Boat, Boatman, canalside pub names are all so imaginative) I went back to my car to re-check the map but spotted Keeping Up (the boat) moored slightly ahead of where I'd parked. Knocked on their roof and chatted for a while, then they told me where the right pub was and I walked a quarter of a mile down the towpath, thought I spotted what looked like a Maffi talking to someone else (turned out to be a John-on-the-Wey) then found Bones in the pub. Went back a little while afterwards to fetch my car, then Dave Postcode arrived, having fetched Pingu (with broken toe).

Phew! I'm glad I got that sorted, or at least I hope I have.

  10. I think I've remembered which pub this is, banter there before included Allan & Graham & Bottle & Phoenix & Alan Fincher (all with respective OCMs) plus Carlt but no Bones

On second thoughts, that might have been Braunston.

and not the other one where I met Bones & Maffi for the first time and Rose flashed her knickers?

And I think that could have been the Jolly Boatman?

Oh I'm all confused now, have I been to this pub before?

  11. Ok so the banter is on for the 29th of November, The Boat Inn, Canal Rd, Thrupp, Kidlington, Oxfordshire OX5 1JY

    Dinner Menu

    MAIN

Deep fried Pollack in beer batter and chips with tartar sauce £9.95

Pork belly with carrot puree, braised savoy cabbage and black pudding £11.25

Pan fried breast of guinea fowl with spinach, lentils, chorizo and courgette jus £13.95

Wild mushroom risotto with rocket salad £13.25

Herb crusted rump of lamb with crushed garlic and rosemary potatoes, spinach and red wine jus £13.95

Mature Rib eye steak with green peppercorn butter, chips and salad £15.95

I think I've remembered which pub this is, banter there before included Allan & Graham & Bottle & Phoenix & Alan Fincher (all with respective OCMs) plus Carlt but no Bones, and not the other one where I met Bones & Maffi for the first time and Rose flashed her knickers?

Do they do any proper food at sensible prices (e.g. steak & ale pie + chips, seven or eight quid), or is that it?

(The mole tends to avoid on principle any menu where dishes come with a jus)

  12. On one stretch no notices but applications for permission to apply the notices to a heritage site. So how much has this cost BW?

From a conversation with a lock keeper I understand it's £100 each, just for the planning applications, and we've seen dozens of these on the S&W. I've no idea how many applications have been lodged across the entire system but that's going to multiply up quite rapidly, then there's the cost of the signs themselves and paying someone to attach them.

I was also told £500 per square wooden stump (£1,500 per lock), but I've yet to see anyone do anything more than sit on one.

  13. Having re-read my earlier post (made unexcusably without thought after drinking) please accept my apoligies for any offence caused.

Thoughts are with anyone who knew this couple

I doubt that any offence has been taken, but at times it is all too easy to overlook the fact that this "virtual waterways community" is made up of real people with real feelings, and there are certainly a few forum members who have been deeply shocked and saddened by the dreadful news of this incident.

Likewise, my thoughts are with anyone who knew any of the people involved.

  14. It's certainly a bit of a bloody mess, I stopped off at Stourton Junction and had a walk up that way on my way home this evening (although the breach is quite a way from the junction and I didn't have time to get that far).

    08090801.jpg

I understand from the bloke on NB Odyssey (above) that BW have got some stop planks or dam in place and have already started to let water down the 16 to re-water the Stourbridge town arm, and that there are plans to get the lower stretches back in water within the next 7 - 10 days to allow any stranded boats to get back down to the S&W, but it's going to take months and cost millions to restore navigation through the breached section.

  15. NOOOOO - No- NEVER!! -AAAAGGGHHHH - pramhoods -- disgusting things

Oh and why are they called 'cruising hoods'?

I've yet to see one ---- cruising

Ah, yes, we were out the previous 2 weeks and at the time it seemed generally grey and grotty, but in hindsight we had some fairly long dry spells and considerably less rain, and we saw plenty of these hoods, out cruising.

Horrible things, but why are they never folded down, even when the weather's dry?

 Is your Steelaway currently moored at Whaley Bridge?

  16. Now hang on a moment, I understand you can't use the letter V so Vs become Fs, but this is taking the Python a bit too far:

"Well can you say the letter K?"

"Oh yes, khaki, kind, Kuwait, Keeble Bollege Oxford"

"Well why not use the letter K instead of the letter C?"

"What? Spell bolour with a K - kolour? Oh that's very good, I never thought of that before, what a silly (person)"

If you have to write "komplaining" with a K, how come you can type "CDs"?

So if you're back to w**k on Monday, will you be anywhere near some place that sells ceyboards?

  17. Canal side pumps will have to be replaced or cleaned before pumping white diesel, I am informed. Once again anyone else heard this.

This is wrong, no new pumps, no new tanks, as far as I'm aware we'll still be buying red but paying an extra levy on that which will be used for propulsion (taken at our own estimate but you'll be an idiot to declare zero).

  18. There have been several comments about fuel prices going up in November. What's happening and how much?

As I understand the situation, following a lengthy conversation with 'The Bloke at Wheaton Aston' when we filled up last week, the pump price will be unchanged. However, you will have to declare what percentage of the fuel you have purchased will be used for propulsion, and pay an extra 40.66p per litre on that volume.

  19. Sorry for the lack of updates, but I've been busy with woodwork and stuff, and the boat's actually starting to look quite respectable (I really must update my build blog).

The plan is pretty-much as I listed above (except that the cats are coming too ), and although it means averaging 9 - 10 hours per day for the first 6 days (and hoping luck's on our side with the Harecastle), we should be in Macclesfield by Thursday 21st, in the hope of meeting Dave & Debby and any others who can make it along.

I will send details of our progress and hope that someone might relay to the forum. If we're heading your way it would be great to put some more faces to screen names.
