  1. OK I know I have to warm the plugs for around 20s by turning the ignition on - but do I need to turn the key that bit further and see the voltmeter drop at the end of the 20s or for all of it? Cheers, Richard.

Make sure the button on the morse is pulled out to disengage gear (and (from experience) the 'engine stop' is pushed in), then I move the throttle lever to around two-thirds. The ignition key turned to what I would call position 1 does nothing other than turn on the electrics, I tend to hold the ignition key at position 2 (plug heating) for around 20 seconds from cold, (your voltmeter may or may not begin to drop, depending on the state and charge of your starter battery), then key on to position 3 and ours usually fires within 10 seconds.

Knock the throttle back to around one third for a minute or so until she's firing smoothly on all pots, then back to tickover.

You should only need to go through that pre-heat on the first start of the day.

  2. I think it used to be automatic - has it been changed with a forum software upgrade or something ??

I don't think saving sent PMs has ever been a default option, the 'save sent' option it's something I've only ever used once in a blue moon, and would not generally consider necessary or desirable.

  3. Hi, i'm having problems viewing and using the gallery. Clicking on gallery works fine, but when i click on "waterways" it says "no image found"

Check the 'Sorting Options' at the foot, mine seems to have defaulted to looking for images posted in the last 30 days. Change that to "from the beginning" and you get pages of pics.

  4. A great turn-out, good food, reasonable beer, excellent company.

Thanks and well done Bones

Thanks for the bed, wish I could have stayed for breakfast, but I made good time getting home this morning and Mrs. Mole is already at w**k, poor thing.

    So when's the next?

  5. I used a flexible adhesive intended for fixing to wood, although tiles are fixed to a pseudo-asbestos panel which is screwed and glued to the wood.

The tiles I used are ordinary ceramic floor tiles, which will generally be stoneware (as opposed to earthenware, used for wall tiles) - you can easily tell by the weight.

Stoneware tiles have already been fired twice - a biscuit firing at around 1,000°C, followed by a glaze firing at around 1,250°C, so I really don't think the warmth from a stove will bother them too much.

  6. Basic amenities would be water points, toilets, elsan disposal and general refuse.

Long-term moorings may have electricity bollards.

I only know of one visitor moorings in our area which also has showers and token-operated laundry.

BW are notoriously inadequate when it comes to recycling facilities.

  7. My pass has been signed for the 24th

I'm coming on my own :)

    (snip)

    See you there :clapping:

Well it would appear that I'm now in the dog-house (and am no doubt compounding the felony by posting this :)) because when Lynn said something like "if you're going, you're going on your own", she was being sarcastic, and I heard what I wanted to hear and missed the intonation.

Having sorted out the morse cables so the throttle isn't stuck open, we should be going for a little chug over the Easter weekend. Mrs. Mole is now miffed that I'm planning to be home by Monday lunchtime in order to head off to Napton, especially as I've only recently seen most of the forum members who will be there.

Still, the F1 season starts this weekend, with live coverage in the small hours of the morning, so I'll be kipping on the sofa anyway.

    See you there :);)

  8. Now, the important question? Am I still ahead of that dratted furry, smelly little burrowing critter or do I need to call on my newly-found expertise as a Council hoccifer to get him eradicated....I can do that. I have the power!

I think you'd better find another relay :)

  9. My pass has been signed for the 24th :)

I'm coming on my own :):)

As Mrs. Mole is working on Tuesday 25th, she really doesn't fancy the trip, or more particularly the drive back.

Poor deluded soul seems to think I might drive home the same night, but that's never going to happen ;)

I may have to kip in the car and be away by 06:30, but that's not a problem.

    See you there :clapping:

  10. Where do you look for boat related items first: in the mags or online? From Boats For Sale to Equipment - how many of you would bother to buy a waterways' magazine to scour the ads as opposed to typing your requirement into the Google, Yahoo or other search engines?

I may occasionally buy a waterways magazine, and have even subscribed to 'Canal Boat' since Bones started writing a page, but I hardly ever take any notice of the adverts.

I would use this forum as my first reference and then google any recommendations I received here.

  11. Could you add your name if you are intending to come and number of you so I can get a vague idea of numbers. Of course, anyone can turn up at the last minute! ..... I am persuming there will be 22 of us ..... Oh dear, 22 is an enormous amount!

    Make that 25 or 26.

I am trying to convince Mrs. Mole that we should be there, but I'm also persuming (sic) that she will be driving us home that night as she still has to do that horrible thing beginning with w on Tuesday.

I suppose I could try leaving her at home, but I would still have to bring the molelets.

  12. If you want to do that grand tour de force it will take 180 hours ...(snip)... 9 hours a day - every day. What are you, some sort of masochist?

Have you not read Janet's previous cruise logs?

So if they do the T&M, GU, Thames, Oxford etc. in a fortnight, where can they add on for the third week?

Janet and R.J. like to get their money's worth, and 12 hours a day, every day, is their idea of fun.

  13. Just a quick hijack if I may be permitted:

Ours is acting up a bit too. The pilot lights and will stay lit, turn on hot water and it fires up as normal, and the flames look the right colour. However, turn off the hot tap, the burners die down and the pilot goes out.

The flue's clear, but I haven't had the front off yet to check the burners. Is it just mucky burners, or is there something else I should be checking?

  14. If either of you want an explanation please email me off group and I will do my best to explain it in simple terms.

Thanks Tony, but it's really not something I need to understand.

    Mike,

The “manky looking heatshrunk device” is the thermistor, which is normally hidden in the wiring harness. The wires can be exposed and lengthened or shortened as required, but the thermistor is meant to be placed somewhere in the general vicinity of your battery bank.

If it's broken, they have them in stock, and they aren't expensive (although the bloke I spoke to couldn't remember off the top of his head).

Any problems or questions, tel: 01902 380494 or email techsales (at) adverc.co.uk

  15. Thanks. Will try Adverc --- hadn't really thought of that --- and they are reasonably local to me. So it's the battery rather than the alternator temperature it is designed to read ?

No disrespect, but I don't understand or care what you're talking about, all this stuff about Adverc or Sterling goes right over my head.

However, Adverc are very local to my place of employment, so I'll take a walk over tomorrow lunchtime, give them the link to your question and see if they might care to reply online.

  16. I love those summer mornings. Leave every one else in bed, cup of coffee on the hatch and cast off. You never go much above tick over as you part the early morning mist. It seems rude to go faster while the world is waking up.

    Absolutely :stop:

Having said that, I generally don't like to run the engine before 8am as there's only a couple of mm of steel and no sound insulation between our rather noisy injin'ole and Lynn's ear'ole.

However, by that time of the morning I will already have walked or cycled a few miles of towpath with my camera.
