  1. dont know if you have been boating before bout the best advice i can give you is try it first take a weeks hire boat out or a fortnight youll either love it or hate ive seen couples who wanted to buy and ive told them the same one couple i met a month later he loved it she hated it they never spoke to each other for three days and she wouldnt come out the cabin an irish couple i met at fradley he didnt want the holiday on a boat thought hed hate it when he got back after a week out he went straght down to sawley marina and bought one the same week

  2. ive been in castle marina for going on 10 years its generally safe above the lock since the pubs opened below the lock you get grief from the drunks lobbing glasses and bottles now and then one instance someone was thrown in the cut by some yobs down there one boats been set on fire thats the most serios thing thats happened in the last decade and the ocasional untie the rope joke if there was a mooring s scale i would give it 9/10

    Regards Denis

  3. You should wire them in parallel to your controller - don't you have instructions with the panels ?

They will then both contribute what current they can each provide but the voltage will only be the voltage of one of them. What voltage is each panel ?

    Mark

both 70 watts 12v/24 instructions were in pigien welsh/arabic i think for the charge controler no instructions came with the solar panels do i connect the solar panels together then to regulator or as ive done connect both to the regulator wich only reads as putting out 4 amps????

  4. from what i have seen on surveys they are like mot test stations on cars what one deems as not good another will say is fine my brother inlaw had a £650 survey on his boat and to be honest it wasnt worth it some of the things he picked up on were vague ie (wireing in fuse box appears to be under size) now to me its either right or wrong there cant be appears to be any way bsc 2 years later picked up a major point that the expesive survey didnt,,another friend had a survey and we went through the boat a month later and there were 8 gas leaks survey didnt pick up on me personally would go for a new bsc inspection just to be sure its safe for a cost of £90 /£100 and spend the saved 400/500 on something else

  5. went thru 2 years ago did not need to book for the 9 found it prety safe with regular police patrols canal watch a lot of cctv we got stuck in the centre for 2 days because somebody had ripped a sill out of one of the locks and drained the pound bw were not impressed the lock gear is a strange set up chains to open the locks and there is one section cant remeber wich but there is no to path so you have to stay on the boat other wise like i had to do reverse back up to pick up the wife

Sorry it is such short notice but I only found out about it tonight!

thanx were is that exactly please might take a run out

  7. when are us Brits going to stand up for ourselves and tell these medaling #### to stay out of our affairs every time these beurocratic #### want to make a name for them selves the little man suffers if the french do not want something they shout and every one knows about it we just bend over and paint our toe nails and smile politetly so as not to offend !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. i used to supply reclaimed pine flooring to the antique pine men they used to use caustic soda to remove stains best to use OLD caustic to prevent burning the wood try any pine door striipers you can find they will be happy to give you a pint if it leaves a burn stain try putting some used tea bags on the area

  9. Ok thanks to everyone for the replies what im going to try is three 1mtr heating foils one in the bedroom and one under the floor in front of both recliners in the cabin so at least it should keep the toes warm on the long winter months and not draw as much power 300 w instead of 1400 will let every one know if it works out ok

  10. Presumably you mean you need about 14 sqr mtrs?

    So thats 100*14=1400watts. (1.4kw)

And your inverter is 1500w (continuse)

So assuming it can handle 1400w long-term, and has an effiency of 0.8 (incuding all cabling losses), thats 1750w our of the battery, which at 12v is 146amps.

So if you run the floor for a very conservative 1.5hours, thats 2625Ah.

So with a 100amp alterator, assuming it charges at full pelt right to the end (it wont) and is 100% effeicent (there not), and you dont use any other power at all (again, not likly).

    - You would still need to have the alterntor running for 26hours a day to main the charge in the bank.

Im not trying to write off the whole project for you, but from the above sums, there still a bit more work to be done...

    - Heating (anything) take a hell of a lot of energy!!

    Daniel

ive got 5 135 amp bats and a 160 amp alternator do some more maths for me please

(also, i've knocked out this post in less than 2mins, and there may be errors, so i would double check it...)

try that again ive got 5 x 135 amp bats and a 160 amp alternator that does kick out 160 a do some more maths for me please

  11. I was wondering if anybody out there may be able to give me any contact details of a person who could fit diesel heating.

I have recently bought a range cooker (which also runs the central heating and water heating). It runs on diesel. I need to get it fitted and am looking for a suitably qualified person who is used to working with diesel and also on boats.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Lynn

you can try mike culley at lockgate stoves at shardlow he has a web site dont know how to bring it on here for you he may do what you want worth a call

  12. Denis,

Why not insulate the floor? When I fitted out our boat, in addition to the cabin, hull side (2") and the roof (1") I put 2" of poly on top of the ballast before flooring out. The ballast (compressed slabs) sits on rails 2" above the base plate. It seems to work.

The worry I would have is that if you use a fluid filled system, in the winter: freeze =expand=burst pipe= water in the boat!

    Tony

sorry you have it confused it will be electric heating foil not hot water putting down thick insulation is not poss withou ripping boat apart although i did contemplate doing that on my last shell thyanks

  13. Ahhh, electric underfloor...

Fair enough, i was visulising "wet" underfloor heating.

    - Would i be right in guessing your planning to run it of a shurline then?

    Daniel

Now then if we have the calcs right the foil is rated at 100w per sqr mtr i need about 14 mtrs wich we believe is 6.5 amps ive got a 1500w sine wave inverter that should run it i am not planning on running it full time just evenings and a hour or so inthe morning just to warm me toes

  14. I can think of one problem???

Is there enough space under the floor, floors tend to be very close to the ballast.

    Good idea though.

The matting i intend to use is designed for laminated flooring and is only about 1.5 mm thicki have 3/4 ply floor then real wood laminate ontop what the intenion is to take the laminate up put a 12mminsulated layer down then the heating foil then drop the laminate back down on top
