  1. A 59p piezzo crystal, waterproofed and fitted to the point of 'strain'. When bent, piezzos' give an electrical impulse, which could be amplified into a signal by a 741 series op-amp to work a latching relay which operates an alarm with a manual reset, so you can't ignore it!!

There, thats the hard bit done, just got to build it now!! So off to Maplins!

I have one even cheaper it stands on the back of the boat and the audio alarm is something like this OI SHUT THE BL***Y PADDLES :)

  2. "Perhaps there is a place on the market for some sort of presure sensor that......"

Too complex - what about a level detector - a ball bearing in a tube - that triggers the alarm when the boat is tilted front to back by say 5 degrees?

what about looking down the wall for a white painted marker oh and perhaps a white sighn saying something like CILL

must have been typing this at same time as yamanx

  3. My siter and her husband in Blake arrived at Belgrave lock with the level well into the red last Friday. Fortunately they decided to press on to Raynsway (Thurmaston) with the encouragment of some others with, I presume, some local knowledge. The are now safely in the marina and , by the looks af things, likely to stay there for some time. If they had decided to remain at Belgrave life would have been much more difficult for them!

thats fine for them but if something did go wrong if the markers are in the red your insuance will not pay out

  4. if your squirrel doesnt have a back boiler you can retro fit one most good chandlers stock them on my boat as a genral rule of thumb with out any heating on inside the boat is 5 deg higher than outside temp ie if its -10 outside its -5 inside

  5. River trent is up 5/6 foot boats queing at beeston waiting to go up more rain forcast for the weekend i cant see it going down much if any before then so stay away from the trent and soar

  6. Hi Denis

I've put a sender and temperature gauge from Russel Newbury onto my J3 to keep an eye on engine temp. It's worked perfectly for the last 5 years. The gauge looks solid and stylish, suitably traditional. Hope this helps.

thanx will look into that

  7. Denis, you do not say what it is that you are circulating but assuming that it is central heating water from a back boiler my experience might give you another option. The life of the pump and the efficiency of the heating system was improved by installing a pipe thermostat on the hot water outlet from the boiler. This was then wired via a relay to a Johnsons circulation pump (faultless for many years). Once the water has reached the temperature set on the thermostat ( variable with a dial) the pump kicks in and the hot water is fired round. Our pump only ran for a few minutes an hour and we avoided just shoving luke warm water round the system. The thermostat should only cost about £15.00 and you may not need the relay ( the thermostats are designed for 240 volts so we used a relay to keep the current down) Oh, and the boat was always cosy!

thanx for that yes it is central heating my problem is i am running pipes from one side of the boat to the other under the floor

  8. This is one element where BW are missing the point badly: most of the anti-sentiments expressed here are very valid, in particular the difficulty faced by anyone trying to gain a mooring where there is no secure and transparent mechanism for getting one. Some time ago I was advised to "get on a waiting list and continuously cruise: it's not difficult to comply and you'll have a mooring in a year, although it won't be your first choice": BW can't now say that. In the end I persuaded a friend to let me use their vacant EOG mooring.

However, BW is subsidised by the government: no amount of encouraging rich boaters will ever stop this because canal boating is at the bottom end of the boating market: anyone who doesn't believe this should go to a south coast marina or even better one on the med. The richest boaters don't go on the canals at all. To justify getting a subsidy BW need to be seen to provide something the market won't: in many instances they are maintaining a liability that the market wouldn't touch with a barge pole, if you'll pardon the expression, and the truth of this was demonstrated a few years ago when RailTrack as they then were paid for part of the Derby Canal to be re-excavated because they'd had flooding problems ever since it was filled in.

BW need to be careful, because by making boating the preserve of the rich, they actually lose some of the justification for their grant in aid off Defra: also, subsidy is provided on the basis of local economic benefits, that's people spending money on boat maintenance and in canalside pubs that they wouldn't spned if they didn't have a boat. There is little evidence that the rich spend much more money, and it is often less effectively spent: the less well off boater is more likely to use the local mechanic and the local store and pub, while the better off use Waitrose, the large chain restuarant (or even a taxi to a non-canalside place) where less money goes into the local economy. More boats, more cash into local economy: fewer better off boaters won't help and again undermines the case for the Defra grant.

So BW are doing a good job of shooting themselves in the foot: they need the less well off boater (private or hire) the angler (sorry, but they do) the walker etc to justify their grant. Put up turnstiles everywhere and they'll lose their grant and the revenue won't replace it, and the world won't be a better place either.

    Rant Over

    excelent rant well done

  9. Despite what it shows in the Flintstones, cavemen and dinosaurs did not co-exist Neil. In fact there are many millions of years between the near extinction of the latter and the emergence of the former evolving from some lower form of proto human.

Less seriously, why is anyone surprised that people with more money have more clout? As you say it has always been that way, it being found by experience to be the best way to run society. Not perfect of course, merely the least worst.

A guy with more money can eat at better restaurants, wear better clothes, go on dearer holidays, live in a better house and so on than someone with less. Why should canals be any different? Especially because canal boating for most is a luxury pursuit, a hobby and therefore there is no moral imperative, let alone an economic one, to make provision for the poorer amongst us.

think ill get my serfs clothes out of the wardrobe and head off down to watford to my lords palace to see how i can best please him then

  10. But surely thats been the case since the birth of time..... :D

The caveman with the biggest club got the cave with the panoramic view and the biggest lump of dinosaur on his plate....

hahaha but its not the done thing to club someone to death and take thier mooring ,just off to cut down a pine tree and bang a few nails in the end just in case

  11. so the way i read that is the guy (lawyer dentist vet etc) who earns say for instance 50k a year is allways going to beat the guy (farm worker storeman night watchman etc) earning 20k a year.

ie the farm worker can only afford lets say £1500 a year he has a fixed wage

and lets say the lawyer can pay £3000 a year as he will probably spread the added increase on his invoices to his clients

basicly the more money you got the more clout you got forcing the little guy out of the way ..

  12. dont know if this will work for me will try no cant do, it (trying to put link on ) i bought a 70 watt of a german company last year excelent item £232 which was a £100 cheaper than the same item anywere in this country ordered it on wed was here on frid morn
