  1. hello there, i have built fireplaces and fitted stoves to 4 or 5 boats in the last few years. my own boat included. i always used concrete paving slabs as a base, and fireboard to the rear and side of the stove, this was fastened in place with no-nails and then tiled over as normal ,never had a problem.

  2. Agree with Heffalump - so I always take off the Chinaman's hat when the stove is on. But if there's a really heavy rainstorm when the stove's not lit, don't forget an inch or two of rain could be dumped down the flue and lie in the bottom of the stove until you next look.

When leaving the boat, I always take off the chimney and hat altogether and tape on a polythene cover, as the hat can be blown off. ( haven't yet found a big enough tin can to paint black and put on, and I'm too mean to buy a proper cover.)

dont buy proper cover , a stainless saucepan with the handle rivets ground or drilled off is a cheap alternative.

  3. Does anyone know if it is permissible to tow a canadian style canoe through harecastle tunnel, I don,t want to get up there and find it isn,t allowed. Thanks. Also what method would you suggest, close coupled or on a line.

  4. Living just south of the ashby hire co, we see our fair share of boats coming at a bit of a lick. Even if they slow down past us i sometimes politely comment that the stern wave they are creating is washing sediment from the banking into the canal . Iam never rude and for the most part this advice is taken in the same spirit in which it is offered. However the worst culprits tend to be owners of megga money floating palaces. Today however one culprit i believe should definetly know better is the driver of historic boat JAGUAR. Yes he did slow down past moored boats including me, but what got my goat was the stern wave following him before he reached us, without exageration i reckon it must have been in the region of 10" to 12", i could see it washing up the bank.surely if he cant be arsed to set a proper example, what chance have shallow canals like the ashby got, before they are unavigable due to depth issues. Perhaps he may just think he is exempt.

  5. hello, we have just the one fin rad on our c/h system, its low down near the floor in our bedroom. because of its location it is protected by being built into a small alcove in a cupboard at the foot of the bed, consequently the wood around it absorbs a lot of its output. I do think that unprotected they may be a bit vulnerable to damage.

  6. years ago i bought a set of cheap jacket and trousers from a m/bike shop.Black nylon type material with taped seams, velcro wrists and zipped leg bottoms. even the cheapest m/bike gear should stand up to stationary use on the back of a boat, with the added advantage of being bouyant if you are unfortunate to take a look!!! Top this off with a wide brimmed hat of your choosing to keep rain of your face (and glasses) and it can be reasonably bearable in inclemment weather.

  7. I,m not sure if the gentleman comment is a compliment or not, but our boat is powered by a Kelvin K2.

My last boat had a Ruston 2VSO. I have in the past spent a few days on a boat fitted with a Beta Tug engine.

If you want a nice sounding, nice looking engine get a genuine vintage (The Russell Newbury or Gardners are possibly exceptions).

If you want a modern, hidden away, quiet as possible engine, then I suppose the Beta engine is a possibility (but not the quietest)

But if you are planning to get a Beta tug engine with a view to "displaying" it in an engine room:- Don't do it.

  8. Hi,i do apologies, quite a coinsidence that such a limited interest was recently investigated, will try not to be tedious again, regards Malcolm

Craggy ,what DO you think you doing ,not reading every one of hamsterfans posts. Don't you know how tedious he finds that???

  9. I don't think this has been posted yet - a warning for those coming to Crick by boat.

The towpath moorings between the marina entrance and bridge 13 have been closed off - it is an ecologically sensative area. Public moorings for the show will be north of Bridge 13.

    Maggie

Surely the whole of the canal system of great britian is an ecologically sensitive area, what have they got up there thats so special?

  10. Can any one help??

We (DH, my dad and i) are going on our first ever canal boat holiday next month. Really looking forward to it, even my dad is getting excited! lol

But................... we have a small issue. Dad is a Coeliac - can only eat gluten free foods (no rye, wheat, oats, barley). Does anyone know of places to eat on route that can accomadate this? Just be nice for him to actually have a proper meal other than salad etc. Or make a change other than eating on the boat all week.

    Any ideas, suggestions gratefully received.

    Thank you.

HIYA, heres a few ideas, Coventry canal ,GREYHOUND PUB, hawksbury junction, Exhall Coventry. Ashby canal, LIMEKILNS PUB,A5 Watling st Hinckley. THE MARINA, Coventry rd Hinckley. Suggest you ring with requirements. Hinckley has Morrisons

Tescos, Sainsbury's, Icelands all within reasonable walk from Trinity moorings , Castle st Hinckley has v/good friut/veg shops at bottom and holland and barret at top. Hope this of some use. Have a good time, give us a toot as you pass bridge 21 on the Ashby.

  11. HI to everyone, I don't know if this is going to be of use to anyone who is currently fitting out a trad with boatmans. As you motor past charity docks on the cov, on the bank behind the partially sunken hulls of a couple of old work boats is a cast iron stove sat in long grass , it appears to have two circular pan stands(correct name??) because its in the grass I cant vouch for its condition but what is visible looks ok. May be worth a punt, hav'nt got contact details but believe owner is Gilberts, and its in Bedworth ,Warwickshire. good luck, Chris. How daft am I, their called hotplates are'nt they?

  12. I can vouch for specsavers ones.

Over about 12 years mine have had new lenses, hinges, arms and various screws (like the old brush) but the middle bit which hold the lenses is original.

They have survived being sprayed with paint, dropped then cycled over, dropped then run over (in an XC) and even an explosion which blew them off my face and one of the lenses out.

They aren't very trendy looking. Think Donald Pleasance.

Come to think of it I look a bit battered myself.

They sound almost as good as Trigger from only fools and horses, broom which had only had 4 new heads and 3 new handles. best broom he ever had..

  13. Hi Chris, I'm an animal healer. Much will depend on how much socialisation dad has had with his son due the early formative weeks of the pup's life and how much socialisation pup has had with humans during this period.

Watch out for territorial marking by adult JRT when son arrives. Also dependant on the age of the adult be aware that it may be intolerant to the playful antics of the son if there has been little socialisation between the two dogs prior to the youngster arrving on the scene. Also be aware that there is no guarantee that the behaviour of the offspring will mirror that of the sire. Good luck.

    best wishes

[Reiki Master, Thank you muchly for your sound advice. I had'nt thought about Toby marking. I know i have my work cut out with house training, because of the pup not being able to get of the boat. I just hope Im not putting too much faith in Toby's good nature, although when we have had other peoples dogs onboard even to stay overnight he has been supprenly calm about the situation. Im also hoping that the pup will pick up on his dads calm nature.icon9.gif

  14. Hi there.

Any advice on what sort of portable generator to get?

Honda 2kw anyday, bloke i know crowed about buying a copy for a lot less, but after sending two of these back he ended up buying a honda. Expensive , yes but unbeatable.

  15. Well he finally went and did it, several weeks ago our little Jack Russel Terrorist, Toby lost his cherry, the result is our landlord at the barge has said we can have one of his pups. I must admit part of me is ecstatic , and part of me is bricking it. the pup is another male and I'm just hoping that dad is going to be OK with son. Toby is a fantastic dog as a JRT he is probably unique and i love him dearly, i just hope i can get his little lad to the same standard and also that they get on together. ANY advice welcome. Watch out for a couple of mad Jacks on the roof of FAULKNOR. Cheers Chris.!!!

  16. Just a thought , how many of you are there, although I live on a boat and don't enjoy the best of health I quite fancy getting a canadian type canoe and motoring to different parts of the canal system ,loading up the canoe and boggin of down the cut till you find somewhere to stop for the night, following the ways of Ray Mears and leaving no trace that you had been there.

  17. LEE ive got a weaco cr110, its just over 18 month old.twice since new i have had to glue the door seal back in position cos it falls out and stops the door closing properly. and three days ago the bottom of the plastic door fell apart and the door fell of. it is probably irreparable.and i am awaiting a replacement door price at the momenent. wouldnt buy another.

Finaly got new door for the fridge, it was £114+vat+£12 carriage to midland chandlers. I was told that we were lucky to get it at £114 as the proper listed price was £190. The next thing that goes wrong with it , its going in a skip at the recycling plant. The build quality is pants, the shelving system is very awkward to use and the price when new is outrageous, we only bought this one because it fitted the gap left by our old one.

  18. A big thank you for the hard work of CCS. Where would we be without volunteers?

On another point, has the Council withdrawn support for the Rangers?

The canal clearance trips carried out between sutton stop and cov are carried out on various sundays by the coventry canal preservation society with volunteers using thier lovely old work boat Panther.
