  1. Yes it is indeed Umbriel and the butty is Ariel.

I raised Umbriel, about 8 years ago, at Brinklow, when she was in the centre channel in about 8 feet of water.

I shall wander up there tomorrow (today, now, looking at the time), to see if there is anything I can do to help.

The UCC tug moored there looks like they have a plan.

No air bags. Plywood nailed to the side planks then builders plastic wrapped round is the usual method, when it is this deep.

It probably sank because it doesn't have much back end and the bilge pump failed.

Once the stern drops a bit Umbriel sinks in seconds.

    Hello Carl

whats happening with UMBRIEL? has she been refloated & is ariel ok?

  2. I think, considering the significance of Arcturus and Sirius, £30k is more than reasonable and it must be heart rending to have to part with your boats, especially considering the family history, on top of their heritage importance.

yes it is very sad that i have to sell them, but iam trying to be realistic, i have not got the money needed for the work that has to be done. so for the boats someone that has will be able to keep them going.

the quote was for every thing involved in the rebottoming which also included new kelson.

SIRIUS has had complete rebottoming rebuilt sturn end.

  3. That sounds like a 'premium' quote to me

    Tim

depends how you look at it! the engine a lister HA2 the fact that both boats have had a lot of work done on them. so if you add the cost of the rebottoming to my price you then have two very good

    and historic boats for £55,000

  4. Bit belated...

Ian is in deceptive condition; while she looks okay, she need a total rebuild. Rough estimate: £150,000. She used to be in Crick, and sank 3 times because the bilge pump failed. I raised the alarm on two of her duckings.

Apopros of nothing, I'm saving up and learning how to rebuild/look after wooden boats. Ian will be mine

since IAN went on the market i have had to put ARCTURUS & SIRIUS up for sale due to ARCTURUS needing new bottoms, ive been quoted £25,000 not the sort of money that i have at hand.

SIRIUS has been rebottomed. the boats are in good shape & i think the price of £30,000 for the pair

    is fair.

    thanks

  6. We have driven past her on may occasion but can never seem to find any info on her. She is called Chance and thast pretty much all i can tell you

    DSC00010.jpg

chance ii in the early 90s i helped take her from keysham on the river avon to harefield on the grand union via the k & a, thames & oxford canal the boat was sold sometime afer 2000 then went up to licoln. it was powered by an enfield engine & using hodgekiss cone propulsion.the hull was in very good condition.

  7. Yes, definitely Mabel and Forget me not.

The motor, breasted up with FMN looks interesting, too, and I do like that Day boat (?) conversion.

any idea where MABEL & FORGET ME NOT are nou and there condion.

the last time i heard about them was in the 1990s thay where on the kennet & avon.

  8. Found this on YouTube. Interesting boating on the Grand Union.

that film was part of a vidio film, i brought a copy about 20 years ago there was 3 films on it. the clip that you pointed out was from the second film each film was about 20mins long.

also on the same film shown there it also shows them going through winkwell & using the large wheel to open the swing bridge. mike

  9. Dear All

Thanks for your responses and advice, much appreciated. Will take on board (sorry) but am still going to pursue as I think its doable. As for Que Sera Sera seems a strange one but am sure a simple unadvertised 'tracker' would alleviate this type of issue.

    Cheers

    Les

If you want a share with a differance, iam offering ARCTURUS & SIRIUS a historical pair of wooden narrow boats

basiclly sound but work on the bottoms of the motor boat needed hence the need to share costs.

if your interested & want to know more just ask or contact me at.. siriusmike@ntlworld.com

  10. We would all be tempted I am sure. However, it is you not they who are taking any risk with the taxman/ Don't forget that it is your declaration not the suppliers.

I suspect I know the garage in question too!

yes but if your not signing any declaration & you pay in cash wheres the comeback?

  11. I have just discovered that a roadside garage near my moorings will sell me red diesel at 65p per litre providing it goes into jerry cans and not a road vehicle. I do not have to say what I am going to use it for, and when I asked about signing a usage declaration they did not know what I was talking about

The garage is out in the sticks, in the middle of an agricultural area where people use red diesel for all sorts of bona fide purposes, and customers bringing several jerry cans for red diesel is apparently quite common place. I realise that it would probably be illegal to use this diesel for propulsion, but who would know?

    What would you do?

I would do the same as you!!

    so where is this place?

  12. Yes, these pictures were taken in the “Stinkhole” in about 1982. I’d been offered Beatrice free, but I declined because even though it was historically significant, it would have needed a huge amount of money to restore.

    beatrice4.jpg

i think it was 2003 the last time that i was at the stinkhole BEATRICE was in the same place though her condition had very

    much deterioratd by then.

  13. Just watching our local news (BBC Midlands Today) and there was a story about the Museum at Gloucester Docks.

Poor attendance figures mean it will close in September...... unless visitor numbers increase.

Have any Forum members visited recently?

From the little clip that was shown on tv, it looks like a really good day out, with lot's of working models.

i would have thought that the main reason for the low number of visitors was down to the entry fee,

when so meny museums are fee. yes i have been there but quite some time ago

  14. Yes absolutely fantastic pictures.

I think the Ovaltine "boat" on the bank is actually only the cabin and back deck and it is Mimas's. Can we theerfore presume that the rebuilt wooden motor moored alonside the dock is the rebuilt Mimas?

    Paul H

    i will agree with that

  15. I understand that this is private water/land and the work is (slowly) being done by Chris Collins who restored Albert and Roger. He is reputed to be backed by a wealthy enthuisiast who is more keen he gets it right that on speed.

It would be interesting to know what's there though. Obviously Progress and Ray. I presume the remains of the Ovaltine motor are Mimas. I had also heard that he had the Beatrice - Peter Scott's old boat which was very similar to Tom Rolt's Cressy.

Anything else and what was he working on in the dock?

    Paul H

the remains of the motor on the bank is mimas the boat in the dock is ALBERT. BEATRICE i last saw sunk up the river colne near springwell i would doubt that it could have been moved. thay all make very interesting pictures so thanks to LEO for taking them. keep them coming. mike

  16. We pay the farmer £1,000 a year for the mooring and a cold water tap !!

Then we pay BW £550.00 end of garden mooring.

Then the boat licence on top of that.

    Were on the L&L

    Nige

your doing well it costs me just under £2,500 to moor the pair at the field but iam only an hour from LONDON by rail

AND yes i also get a cold water tap

  17. Sadly Electra is now rapidly heading in the same direction as these boats but not in any queue to be restored, however long that queue may be.

Yes i had heard that ELECTRA went down hill after i sold her, sadly i could not keep her as my father retired from tripping

on ARCTURUS AND asked me keep her with SIRIUS that was at the end of 1999. mike

  18. I remember Ray, Ex. GUCCCo Little Ricky 'Hebe', as being a little further north on an off side mooring, though can't remember exactly where, Kings Langley rings a bell.

ray was moored just south of hunton br. mimas was on the river chess at rickmasworth. The last time i saw MIMAS & RAY thay where breasted up behind my pair ELECTRA & SIRIUS also there where FORNAX, ALBERT & ARCTURUS runing trips i think that was 1995 at the rickmanswoth canal festival. nt 100% on the year mike

  19. Thank Allan,

that makes my decision very easy, i will stay where i am. I wondered why the mooring is now vacant and the boat that was on it is now in a marina further north.

    cheers,

    Steve

ARCTURUS & SIRIUS are both moored by a famers field. I pay the farmer he then pays bw end of garden, so far there has been no problems. mike

  20. I get my Oak from a merchant who supplies the salty builders. I paid £12.50 a cube, last time I bought some and he is always on the look out for the interesting bits of tree that the big boys chuck on the bonfire.

I acquired a substantial amount of spikes from Sweden at much less than anyone in this country supplies them though I believe they only supply them by the ton, now. Black goo and oakum from Liver Grease.

As far as labour goes, anyone who takes on Usk will (if they don't move it too far) get the free services of a joiner who has served his sentence in dry docks and has several sets of tools (and for the serious bendy boat bits has one of the best in the country, on hand, at mates rates).

Of course I hope that they all get saved (especially yours as I believe you have one of the most historically significant pairs, on the cut).

Your share scheme seems a really good idea as I'm sure there are plenty of folk who'd love to be involved but daren't risk the responsibility of owning a project outright. It is also far more honest than the pseudo charities out there, that are merely shared ownership boats financed by tin rattling.

thanks for that. you got a good price on the wood. the price i was given was £18 cu for opepe (its used now insted of elm) & £20 cu for oak. the share scheme, iam looking at 10 people ownership.

  21. Lucy needs a full rebuild, about £15k for materials plus whatever expertise the new owner has to buy in, but that is happening.

To get Usk's Hull up to the standard of Hood's would be in the region of £5k for materials plus whatever expertise has to be bought in. This wouldn't be a great deal as the bottoms and chine are done and there are not many bends need doing.

i would be very interested to know where you get the materials from as the total cost of materials that i have been quoted is over £8,000 but i think you are right the real cost is labour
