  1. Hi all...

    Currently, we have six Sonnenschein A600 2V batteries and they're sat on the baseplate at the side of the engine with boards over the top of them. The starter battery is under there too and its EXTREMELY cramped in there as the swim tapers in at the stern. Well, one or more of the batteries is faulty and we want to change them - but - not have them in the same location - as normal leisure batteries are a lot bigger than these I have - even a 110Ah is bigger than one of mine. So, I'm thinking about having them repositioned on top of the diesel skin tank or somewhere else other than where they are - as there just isn't enough room for the ones I want. If possible, can people (if they have any) post photos of similar battery setups so I can get some ideas for our boat. I'd ideally like a decent amount of amperage available for cruising so its either quite a few 110Ah's or a smaller amount of higher amperage batteries.

    So, if anyone can post a few photos for reference, I'd be most grateful. I'm not looking at starting a big debate about batteries really, just want some ideas for locations and what the bet way to secure them is - without any welding! I really don't want to have to get anyone to weld anything really... I'm going to be a good girl and ensure they're wired in 60mm cable too - for our Sterling 1500W combi charger/inverter. I'm also going to get a Smartgauge and a big doofer s/c relay etc...

    Wired in parallel will give 6v & 330 not 230amps

     

    But your right on the wired in series at 12v & 165amps.

    could anyone give advice:-

    joining two 6v 165ah batteries, do they become 12v 165ah .... or...12v 230ah.

    You need to connect them in 'series' but you wont double their current capacity, it will stay at 165Ah. Only batteries in parallel work this way. But, if you connect two 6V batteries in parallel, you're stuck with your original 6V but a higher Ah.

  5. Their prices though are more expensive than simply getting a dongle for about a tenner a month, and their coverage not as great.

    I got the £99 for 12 months offer from them so I hope they do another similar offer once my contract is over.

    We're really close to the hotspot so we've got a wireless bridge connected directly to them.

  6. We did Torksey to Nottingham and back last week on the Trent, Had a great time, not really too much to worry about, get some charts and don't the cut corners however tempting it may be. The non tidal sections are easier but again same applies. The river flows slowly on the inside of the bends and it drops silt so it can get really shallow. We have the added bonus of our boat being fitted with a depth sounder which really helped on some bits.

     

    Depth sounder? Sounds like a cool bit of kit - does it have a sensor that just hangs over the side of the boat into the water or is it a bit more technical than that?

  7. Dacrylate Paints at Sutton-in-Ashfield have a product called Vinadac. This gives a smooth matt finish that is non-slip. It was developed for bridge decking and we have used it for over twenty years for roof and deck and I've yet to slip. Easily re-coatable. Not cheap but very,very effective. Regards, HughC.

  9. Hi Geoff

    Do you know what kind of blacking was on there originally? I've heard that some kinds don't like to be painted over with different brands - some chemical rejection or something within the two compounds?

    Also, that seems quite a short slot for a full blacking. You'd really want to be taking a good amount of time jetwashing all the yuck off the existing blacking before you do anything. Then, a full coat per day really to ensure its fully dried before the next coat. I'd think you'd be best with perhaps 3 coats to give it a good chance of surviving for 3 years approx. Its easy to think you can start adding additional coats while the other is still tacky but it really does need chance to fully dry before the next coat. I'm not sure about your rust question but I'd try and take it back beyond the rust, perhaps to bare metal, score it, prime it and then get some coat of blacking on but I'm far from an expert so its only a personal opinion.

    I've been trying to find the picture of Chris Coburn, stuck on the River Gipping Weir but it eludes me.

     

    I've seen some of those weirs and they look quite scary - not something you want to be faced with in a narrowboat! Well, any boat for that matter!

  11. The sections of navigable waterways are very well signposted on the Trent and the Ouse. The signs showing you which way to go are huge you really cant miss them.

     

    Thanks for that - I was sure they would be but not having experienced rivers and the like, I was a bit worried!

    I guess I need an anchor now too! :lol:

  12. Have you thought of using gloss paint and sprinkle sugar on it ?

     

    After a little use the sugar will dissolve, leaving a nice rough surface. I think this has a better appearance whilst being worn as the peak of the sand grains don't show thru and it's easy to prepare for next time.

     

    I must admit that sugar hadn't really come to mind, no! :lol:

  13. Hi all...

    I've decided that a nice long cruise might be in order for summer if the weather permits. I've been planning routes on google earth to see what goes where and I'm a bit confused about all the bits of rivers that are non-navigable but appear to not be blocked off. I've been looking at the river trent and the calder and there are lots of bits that 'look' like if you were to head down them - you'd get stuck at little waterfalls and shallows. When you're actually out on those areas, are they in some way signposted (for want of a better word) so as to direct you where to go? There are little windy areas that lead you through locks, onto the river for a bit, then there is a fork in the river with another lock and no end of little ways you have to weave in and out of. This is all well and good planning the routes on google earth but when I'm actually there - things are going to look VERY different! For a start - I can't trace the stretches of water to see if they're blocked off or not (or lead nowhere) and I was a bit confused by it all really and how to plan a decent route without getting stuck or picking the wrong branch/fork and ending up somewhere completely different!

  14. Why not buy her a couple of window box type containers and put them on the boat roof for her garden - or is he anti that as well ?

     

    I'll second that idea too. She can then take her little garden with her when you go cruising - that's what I'm going to do when I get around to sorting out my roof and getting a few little boxes!

  15. Thanks to everyone for their help on this. I will have a 'test' run on the next good spot of weather and see how it goes. I don't really want to mix the sand with the paint in case it doesn't go on nice and smooth. I want a really nice flat surface. I've seen attempted jobs where they have applied the sand with the paint and the surface was all over the place - they have either used too much sand with the paint or something but it looked bad!

    When I get chance to do it, I will take some before/after photos...
