  1. I think I read somewhere that the signal strength is reduced outside of business hours

Also the signal strength is not the key - if many users are connected to the same cell, the signal strength may be strong but the download speed can be poor

Why don't you go to the local pub that has WiFi, download the programme you want to see on BBC iPlayer and then go back to the boat and watch in comfort at broadcast quality with no signal issues ?

  2. Think the water in the stove is boiling so the auto cut out works and shuts down the stove

During the cold weather, the temperature gradient between the air and the stove/radiators is greater so more of the heat is taken out of the water so it wil not tend to boil. With a higher outside temperature, less is transferred so the water (if not circulated through the back boiler of the stove)becomes hotter and will boil and then shut down

Cure ?? - ensure the water is circulating with a pump and keep the stove working at a minimum setting

  4. I used to have one of these engines in my boat

Very good but a lot a vibration against the Gardner I now have installed

I used to have a 22 x 22 prop and she would not rev above 900 rpm - my conclusion was that the engine was overpropped

  6. Good choice of where to go and should not find it that busy once you get off the Tring summit

Pubs a plenty (link to guide below and any feedback so the guiide keeps up to adte welcome) and remember at Berkhamsted there is a Waitrose right next to the cut for general goodies and treats !

  7. Don't think you will ever see them advertised as the 'grapevine' works very well in this area

When a new marina opens, there is often a press release saying x berths of which x are for residential boats

You could always become a liveaboard and many narinas allow this status

  8. Lets think about what a computer will see if credit checks are being made

If it can see an address that it recognises, then it will most probably pass

If it gets a reject because a c/o is in the address, then a fail or manual intervention may happen

Remember. that items are delivered to an address not a name

  9. As one of the leading mail forwarders and from a long career in the mail industry, there is little implication for the owner of an address to having other peoples mail being sent to their address.

Many individuals do not have a permanent street address and use either friends/family/a service provider to receive their mail and, more importantly, allow items such as car insurance, credit cards and government documentation to use the address and be delivered there.

The usual deciding factor to whether you are actually living there is inclusion on the electoral role. You may find that certain credit checks associate the address you are giving against this

  10. Phil

Having lived 'on the bank', life is easy when it comes to identifying yourself as you will have a UK street address and bills to prove that you exist in society

If you become a liveaboard on non residential moorings, this all goes so you will need to arrange to either have a relative/friend to take in your post and you pick it up or they send it to a Post Office c/o Poste Restante

There are 3 companies that provide this service on the waterways (boatmail.co.uk, ship to shore and waterways mail) and some will provise a street address and have varying charging structures

If you have any more questions about mail, I have many years experience in the mail industry and will be happy to answer any query that you (or the readers) have

  11. Hockley Heath is usually difficult to get a signal as the canal is in a cutting through the village

Top of Lapworth should be OK as the transmitters are on top of the water tower on the hill

None of the pubs in the HH area have Wifi

Has anyone experience of using Tmobile 3G internet around the top of Lapworth?

I'm looking quite hard at a replacement job that would involve working from home down the dongle, hence an idea how good the signal is would be handy as now Bp's got a motor we hope to extend our cruising range up that way once (if?) the ice melts.

I don't trust the signal finder as it's a bit optimistic as to what can be reached, especially when the receiver is encased in a big steel faraday cage boat.

The job, for anyone who's interested, is a freelance "anti-Gibbo" working for the Child Poverty Action Group providing benefit advice to first tier advice agencies such as CABx and the like ;) I'll miss some face to face work, but losing examples such as the lying scrotes I occasionally meet will be no hardship :)

  12. The pub on the cut (The Wharf) normally has a selection of real ales but can be described as 'Gastro' rather than Weatherspoons

There are two others in the village (The Bakers Arms and The Five Bells) but last time I looked only the The Five Bells does food
