Just to warn you that the EA are in a right pickle at the moment, with delays of several weeks issuing licenses. They are merrily taking my money by direct debit out of my account, haven't sent me a licence yet and, according to their website, will get very nasty with anyone not displaying a licence. Chatting to an EA chap yesterday, the problems stems from the closure of their Peterborough office and everything now being handled out of Reading. Progress, eh? Gordon
I purchased a EA licence at Alvechurch Gayton less than two weeks ago
They have application forms for you to complete - all you need is the money. They do not need any insurance docs or current BSC
You will alos need to buy a EA key (£10) so you can work the powered locks and get access the few water points

I know Midland Chandlers have rolls of the stuff as I purchased some from them recently
-
Has anyone got any idea why 2011 licence cards can be purple, green or blue? Usually it's one colour per year but I've seen lots in all three colours.
BW Licensing ran out of licences to issue so had to use previous years stock !

You can find al the pubs by following the link below including some very good ones in Chester

There must be a local chandlers who either stock it or can order from their wholesalers ?
-
What about Uplands Marina at Anderton ?
-
Did you notice the side ponds that would have made it even quicker if they had been working ?

List of pubs below
If you find any more, or the info needs updating, please let me know

List of pubs, on, close to or a short walk away below
If you find any more, please capture and I will add to the guide

BCM has a large number of moorings outside of the fence but it is recommended that boats moor inside the museum
There are about 3 boat lengths from the locked gate (access can be gained with a BW key to go to the pub) up to the bridge which are generally used as visitor moorings. There are also a couple of lengths on the other side near to the facilities building

PLerase find below a link to a canalside pub guide that I produce
It contains info to whether the pubs on a canal have WiFi
If you find more, please advise and I will update the guide

Only one word of advice in that the earlier in the day that you go down the flight the better
It is relatively easy to work and single handed takes me nearly 4 hours so a 3 hour journey for a boat with crew is easy
Links to pubs in the area around the top lock below

And you can now apply on line
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/product1?catId=400040&mediaId=600008
If you need to show a 'utility' bill for the future, I'm sure they will also accept your driving licence (and passport) which you will have regstered at an address where you wnat your mail sent to
-
If anyone wants to collect their mail from a Royal Mail Delivery Office, they can do under a service called Mail Collect but there must be an associated local address
The increase in PO Box fees is apparently to reflect more closely the actual cost of the service

2ft back counter
9ft boatmans cabin
6ft engine room
6ft well deck/tug deck
3ft bow
but !
go and look around some boats for sale to get a 'feel' of hwo big the space feels and how much you would want to extend from the cabin sides and bulkheads which will make the inside of the cabin feel much smaller
If you have a rough plan, put masking tape on your living room caprpet which will at least give you an idea how mush room you have and it will depend if you are little people or have been drinking lots of beer over the years !

Bridgewater looks agood bet

I've used both as I hate to spend more than necessary but always want a good job
The bitumen looks good when first going on but will discolour into a grey quite quickly
The 'other' coverings, at a higher, price are superior and last better over a two year period between blackings
I always put two coats on plus a 3rd around the water line which suffers the mosr where (except the bits you scrape along the brickwork)
-
Thnk you ought to show an act of faith by giving them say 10/20% of the total cost which still allows you to haggle with the eventual price
-
Perkins still manufcature so either one of their distributors or themsleves should be able to advise what is recommended for the engine model
-
You may like to look at the following website link below I run - all the pubs listed have telephone numbers so they should be able to advise if they can do food for you all
If you find anything has changed, I'll happily update the website to reflect current state

Perhaps ther is a principle of tying up to be exapnded here
When leaving the boat, its always a good idea to leave a light on to give the perception that someone is on board
Also when tying off, the rope should ALWAYSs be taken to the bank and tied off on the boat with the loose ends tied on the far dolly/T stud - you never know when the locals will strike !
-
Use a 28 inch chimney and, if yours is a traditional looking boat, a tine can to extend the height
-
I've had some success with Halfords Leisure batteries - could be said to be a tat expensive at £139 but have two year guarantee and mine have last over 3 years with heavy use
-
I was at Aston last week - still looks very empty
River Nene Weed
in General Boating
Posted
Been back a week now from the River Nene
There is a clear channel through the river although some places are already showing severe weed growth and it varies from a channel through a lily pond to passing over substational weed growth (very clear water so you can see whats beneath you) which will cause a problem in the coming weeks
EA did have the weed cutter out but when we passed it in the middle of the day, it was tied up !
