  1. The increasingly popular Stratford River Festival will be held this year on Saturday 30th and Sunday 1st July

There will be live music all weekend, beer tent, craft and charity stalls, family area, boats moored on the River Avon and on Saturday night, an illuminated boat display followed by a spectacular firework display

Details of the River Festival can be found at www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk where an application form for a concessionary River Avon licence to attend the festival can be downloaded so boaters can attend this festival and the Evesham and Pershore Festivals the following two weekends

Anyone got any recollections of last year's festival ?

  3. I wlaked down to the pub not lomg before it was open

The decor is now of high quality whereas whenit closed the placed needed much TLC

If you are going to walk to the pub from the moorings by bridge 14, be warned that there is no pathway down the hill on the narrow road and powerful torches for the return in the dark will be sensible

Well, it remains to be seen how they fare over the coming months, usually the quietest in the restaurant business. Their prices are similar but a bit dearer than the Bear's Paw in Warmingham, and that pub (owned by the same people as The Pheasant at Burwardsley) certainly knows how to do thing right. They will have to provide food and service to a high standard to maintain the business.

The Badger has long been welcomed by boaters on that stretch, but I think most boaters will get a shock when they see the prices.

Mike mentions the Royal Oak in Worleston, but be aware this is a mile and a half from the canal along a fairly busy B road. An Alternative is the Verdin Arms on the A530. This is about a quarter of a mile from the canal (Bridge 13 I think) but it is across fields so you need a good torch and an OS map (or Nicholsons) to see where the footpath goes! Not been in there for a while so can't say what the food is like currently.

The Verdin Arms is best reached from bridge 19 along a signposted footpath. Not been there since summer 2010 and then it was a comfortable food orientated pub

  4. The 'Navvy' at Lapworth on the Grand Union Canal at Lapworth is going to reopen in Jan 2012

The pub for many years was run successfully by Andrew Kimber, where it gained a reputation for well kept real ales and hearty portions of good pub grub (who can forget the signature dish large cod and chips), and was then taken over where it was unable to replicate the success and found to have not so clean kitchens closing a couple of months ago.

The pub externally has had a repaint and tidied up with new signs erected saying food always available and expected to reopen in mid January

Will update when I have sampled the beer available

  5. You may like to have a look at the non-commercial website that I produce which will show you the pubs on the section you will be boating

Suggest The George Inn at Bathampton (chain pub and moorings outside) although a check of the pub websites will give you an idea of costs and menus - all the entries have maps so you will be able to see how far you have to stagger back !

  6. Received a flyer for a new free publication at the weekend

Canal Boat magazine are going to produce a free magazine (The Tillergraph) distributing 12000 copies each month between March and October to marinas and chandleries

It says 'all the best boaters news, views, reviews, waterways and business features' so we will have to see whether its any different to the current publications on offer - but its free !

  7. You could try Ancit (anthracite crushed and reformed) which gives a lot of heat

It is expensive (cvica £12.50 per 25kg) but it does buen well, either completely shut down or picks up well when air is supplied. Ash is like dust so cools very quickly

  8. Whether they are heritage boats or not, people who hire/rent expect a clean with everything working when they are away for a week

An external repaint with a traditional sign writing would be a very good start and you can protect the value of the expensive sign writing by over coating with varnish to protect against the bushes/trees that the hirers love to seem to put hire against
