  1. Resurrection of a dated thread.

Some here may realise I like me pubs.

We have just passed through Audlem, prior I thought I would look online at the Shroppie. Lovely photos of the refurbed pub. About seven different ales being offered. Nice and tidy. Wasn't sure,as boaters, we were to be welcomed.

Anyway, in we went yesterday, not very busy, a few people eating, two people waiting at the boat bar, we walked through into the back room, two chaps waiting at the bar to be served their first of the day, waiting for the rugger to start. We waited, and waited, and chatted, and waited. After ages we decided enough is enough and left. Two ales available. One lass on her own, maybe not her fault, but a Saturday lunchtime!!! Quite a bit of boat movement as the locks have now opened after quite a while.

To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement. Money on the refurb seems to have been wasted if it's not going to be backed up by investment in service.

    I feel better now.

Should have gone to the Boat, much better pub :-)
  2. There's several methods which can (and have been) used to take into account electric vehicles when working out their equivalent fossil fuel usage, for example Petroleum-equivalency factor which is used to calculate vehicle manufacturers' CAFE credits.

I think it's how many free coffees you get (in designated Cafes) for every 100 miles covered, or something like that :-)

  3. I think the guys name was Norman but that might just be because we called him storming Norman. Oldish chap who's boat was kid of trad (might have been cruiser) at the back with a pitched roof greenhouse type arrangement at the front. He had a young lad with him who had a raft with an outboard they towed along. His boat was nuts and he used to have proper jumping up and down stamping his feet tantrums. I liked him though. No idea where he went.

Think this boat was at Tyxell wide about 3 weeks ago

  4. Having been born in Cumberland we on the west coast were calling ourselves Cumbrian long before they did away with Westmorland. I have heard inhabitants of Westmorland use a similar abbreviation (if you can call Westmerian an abbreviation).

Also I didn't expect anybody to not be able to recognise the fact I was referring to being born and bred in the area now known as Cumbria.

I really should have known better.

You learn something new everyday. My Granmother was from Dalton and I have family in Millom. I was dragged up in Windermere

  5. Have you lived in the Lakes long to be able to pontificate about LDNP authority. I have lived here for 66 of my 69 years and they have operated well during the years I have known them.

As a result of being a born and bred Cumbrian I take the last line as a personal insult.

Your not a born and bred Cumbrian. It didn't exist 69 years ago. I was born in Westmorland and have never called myself a Cumbrian :-)
  6. That is what is drawing me to Windermere for the first season when i get the boot going, some darn big crocks in there. Thats a beaut you got there kida. Dead bait ?

Try Rydal water. There used to be some monsters.

  7. Cloggy. Do you have personal experience of Dawn. I've just been online to look for a number, which I have.

However, the reviews I've found are not very complimentary to say the least. It would be good to hear a few good words before committing.

Never had a problem with Dawns. As with all smallish towns taxi services they can be a bit hit and miss but have always been on time (when they've answered the phone in the first case). We normally shop then go to Wetherspoons and phone them from there. There's a list of cab companies on the wall at the end of the bar. Hope this helps

  8. Perhaps something to think about. Maybe it would be a good idea to have something like a dead man's handle so if the operator fell, suffered some sort of medical attack etc. there would be a backup that automatically put the gearbox into neutral and hopefully closed the throttle.

I seem to recall that the one in the article defaulted to neutral if there was no pressure on the throttle control on the remote unit

  9. Hi all, as this is the general boaty section i can get away with asking about if folk have a boat or used to have a boat on Lake Windermere, i have loads of plans to do with this boat when its done and this one is to have a weeks cruise from Boothstown up to Carnforth and then road transport to Windermere.

I love to fish, eat and get good samples of good Cider or brews down me. walk the mutt, Zig not Tracey that is, god i hope she dont come on here ;)

Just want a little feed back on the place if anybody can.

    Wolly:)

Oh it would not be moored at Ferry Nab 0)

Why not ferry Nab?. There's a few places near the ferry that have moorings. If you can trailer the boat out there used to be parking by the wardens office. Could try contacting the wardens office they should have some info on moorings.

  10. My understanding is that the original company was Wilson's of Kinver. When they went belly up their employees started Kinver Canopies which as far as I know has a great reputation.

I wasn't aware of this Phoenix company (if it is)

My interest in this is that we have an order with Kinver Canopies for a new cratch cover that'll set us back the best part of £1000 - as things stand I'm happy that they are completely separate from Wilson's but any additional info would be appreciated.

Have you parted with any money yet

Looking at Kinver Canopies Facebook they seem to be expanding their work force. Good sign

  11. About 4 years ago when visiting market Drayton got talking too a boater who'd been asked by a bloke if he could borrow his wheelbarrow, he never got his wheelbarrow back and the boat just down from him had coal nicked at the same time. Talking to locals in the town it was probably a well known scrote who soon after ended up working for HM.

  12. I've heard of things going missing but never had a problem. Have moored on all of the moorings in Market Drayton. If your concerned I would suggest mooring at the top of Tyrley locks and walking into town and getting a Taxi back (Dawns cabs are about £4). Wednesday markets good.

  13. I am on my second colecraft shelled boat though not fitted by colecraft, I have also owned a 70 foot Hudson. I loved my Hudson and its build quality but colecraft are a great shell just remember they are the ford mondeo of the waterways and do not pretend to be anything else, they are run of the mill ordinary but that is not always a bad thing. I would have another colecraft and I would have another Hudson or for that matter another Johnie Pinder or harborough or swanline I have enjoyed all my boats. I have never had a springer but I would buy one if I was in the market for another boat and one came up. There is far too much snobbery around who built what just buy the one you feel suits you and enjoy it. A far more important consideration is which Cassette bog to fit.

    Tim

    Thetford of course

  14. Not sure about Li batteries, but NiCd will only last 2 to 3 years even if you don't use them much. So 2 batteries is a bit of a waste of money if you don't have a lot of work planned. If you do, then 2 or even 3 with a fast charger make for a happy life.

Please don't tell my old NiCd's that, they still work OKish after 8 years use

  15. As mentioned before, anyone boating in a way which probes and tests the lower limits of what CRT counts as CC, is going to run into anomalies. Why not just boat to places at least 20 miles away by road?

I was just using it as an example. We do boat further than this.
