  1. Has anyone any suggestions/recommendations for temporary sleeping facilities in the cabin? We have a fixed rear double but would like to let my mum use that whilst the misses and I kip down at the front. We've 2 nice armchairs so no room for a sofa bed and I was looking at something like this easier than a double inflatable I thought. Anyone any thoughts for double sleeping facilities that I haven't thought of. There only seems to be 2 types of double camp beds on the market. New (to us) boat so don't want to do anything until we are used to the layout as it is.

Amazon are selling double Aerobeds for £64.50p

  2. Does anyone know where I can find good replacement chains for my Ryobi RCS3335 (14" blade).

I found Archer chains on ebay and they're quite cheap, but that's the bit that worries me. Will one end up snapping and ripping through my gloved hand?

They're made in China as is everything these days. I've no idea where the chain that came with the saw was made - quite possibly China too? The chainsaw manual specifies that "low-kickback" replacement chains are used. I don't know if the Archer chain is low-kickback or not?

I have used Terry Bass Garden Machinery Services.

You could also try Shoulders of Shoreham, who I have also used.

  3. It's time for the annual busmans holiday :boat:

Tonight (stage 1 - 1 mile to the pub) we start off for a two week jaunt (well... 16 days if you include the extra weekend) round the Thames ring.

We're doing the clockwise route: Up the Southern Oxford (water permitting  ), hang a right at Braunston, down the Union, left on to the Regents and down to Limehouse.

If all goes well we should be catching the tide on Tuesday 16th to start the potter back up the Thames to Oxford

If you're out and about, give us a wave

    Happy days B)

Have a good trip, I'm just south of Banbury tonight heading for the Thames. Looking to go off at Brentford and back on at Limehouse on the 27th so will see you twice.

  4. When you see a dark blue NB with a light gray roof and portholes coming the other way, wave. We'll be doing the trip in the opposite direction next week.

Your question is almost a FAQ, so it's worth searching for old threads on this, but a couple of things are worth knowing. Mooring at Fotheringhay is a must. It costs a few quid for overnight mooring, but it's really worth it. If you're into steam trains, there are good moorings at Wansford, within steam-oil smelling distance of the trains on the Nene Valley Railway. Finally, to banish the anxiety all canal-dwellers seem to get on rivers about not being able to moor anywhere, get yourself a couple of 56lb weights to act a mudweights, then you can moor anywhere!

If you decide to cross the Middle Level to the Ouse, don't forget that you need to give Stanground lock 24hrs notice of passage, and the stretch from Salter's Lode to Denver is tidal, so you need to talk Salter's Lode in advance to get the timing right. On the Ouse, don't miss out the tributaries (Wissey, Little Ouse and Lark). All three can wind at least 60ft, but don't go past Jude's Ferry pub on the Lark, that's the limit of navigation for long boats. (The winding points on the other two are obvious).

The published land-line number for Stanground now has a voice message giving you a new mobile number, so to save you the hassle, the new number is 07824600470.

Finally, don't forget that you'll need an EA license for the rivers, and the Middle Level people may want sight of your BSS and insurance documents as you pass onto MLC waters.

Have fun, it's a fabulous bit of the waterways.

    MP.

Many thanks will keep a lookout for you.

Ok thanks, but was hoping for up todate info that members have first hand knowledge of.

I will search all the same.

  5. Next week I will be venturing through Northampton onto the River Nene and possibly the River Great Ouse.

I have never done this trip before therefore welcome any suggestions or advice that would make an enjoyable trip. Also suggestions on moorings and places to see.

  6. I am planning a trip on the Thames this summer going out of Limehouse and cruising past Houses of Parliment etc., I have mentioned this to some boaters and have been met with a sharp intake of breath and some have said what a fantastic trip what is the truth?

Also what are the requirements I have emailed the ST. Pancras Cruising Club via their website and have not recieived a reply and downloaded their advice notes.

We are looking to leave Limehouse around 20th July so if there is anybody cruising with the V.H.F. radio can we tag along.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Regards

    Andy

    Hi Andy,

We did the trip yesterday morning, 0530am. Well worth planning your trip early to avoid the usual fast trip boats etc. Left the lock at 0545am, although a little windy, all was fine and we made good progress.Even had to wait about 20 mins. at Richmond lock waiting for them to raise the weirs.

    Cleared Teddington lock at 1010am.

The view of London from the river is not to be missed.

    Regards

    Mike

  7. I enquired of BW enquiries.hq@britishwaterways.co.uk about the cost for my 55 foot n/boat and was advised that if I get it before Christmas it will be £924 or after (VAT rise) it will be £944. It appears that is 2.5% increase +VAT. The info came from Jean Hicks, who has been very helpful.

    Dave

    Many thanks Dave

  8. Mine is hinged and chromed - came with the boat - I ca ask where they got it from... I find it useful to raise when getting on and off at the stern... you could just swing it out of the way though....

    Nick

Thanks Nick, I would prefer a hinged one.

  9. I currently have a chrome tiller handle on my narowboat.

I was wondering, is it possible to have a folding tiller handle in chrome or is this not possible because of the chrome plating?

If it is, where can they be bought. The chandlers I have visited don't seem to stock them.

  10. The best method is to measure the body of the gauge exactly and cut out the corresponding size rectangle in the panel where you want to mount the gauge. If you've got it just right you'll be able to push the body of the gauge (firm sliding fit) into the hole in the panel until the panel touches behind the flange that is on the front of the gauge. If you've made the hole slightly too big then you'll have to use a touch of sealant or adhesive to secure. Warning, don't accidentally press the thin plastic film that covers the LED display as it is very thin and lets go very easily. Only press the buttons, never the LED window..............how do I know?

    Roger

Funny job, mine is very thin too !!

  11. Yes, the long pound is well low, i'm on the tips of my planks at the moment. & the levels at Wooten Rivers, Heathy close and Brimslade have been really unreliable for a month or so now, i'd guess extra water was being pumped from the long pound to cope with this but now the steam pump is working we need a few boats to move west into the pound to fill it up a little.

    Paul

Hope to be on the summit tommorrow. Currently at Great Bedwyn.
