  1. I bought a 7" one from Ebay on Buy-it-now for £75 delivered. Brand new from a UK supplier and its really good. Probably Chinese but it works fine and has a pretty good picture, remote control and loads of leads for various stuff. It can work from 12v, 240v and batteries.

    Very pleased with it.

  2. You shouldnt use silicone as paint wont adhere to it.

    Use polyurethene sealant.

We manufacture steel refuse bodies, which are never fully welded. The paintshop fully seal where the welds are'nt. They use a polyurethene sealant called Stickaflex that lasts for years and the paint does not come off.

  3. I agree, the measurment of voltage is not a good way of determining power usage.

However, if in 36 hours, without charging, you still have enough to run your fridge, lights and inverter. I'd say thats pretty good.

An inverter is only 90% efficient and to get 50w out you need to put 55w in regardless of volts.

You need to do some sums.

This chap from Reading College has been really helpful to me and really knows his onions. He's a nice guy and will give you the help you need.

  4. I'll be spending some time on me boat over the christmas holidays. I've been gradually moving the boat from Berkhamsted to Norbury Junction on the Shropshire Union, its moored at Weedon Beck at present.

I'm moving the boat next weekend so its just past Stockton Locks to avoid the stoppages. Then from 27th of December until 31st I'm cruising up the Grand Union, through Birmingham and onto, hopefully, the other side of Wolverhampton.

    Cant wait!

  5. Hello Richard,

How possible is it for you to publish on your web site the locations of santitaion points, water points etc? Using a search facility, after all you do know where they all are.

The waterscape web site is well presented but a bit too general and like a brochure. There is no search engine for specific waterways areas, accept for stoppages. For instance I wanted to know where Stockton locks are. I could'nt find the information on your web site. Also I once found a search for moorings but cant remember how and its not obvious from the front page.

  6. The word addicted is misleading, as has been said before your compression will gradually become less with each use and this leads to harder starting so you will use more of it.

However the main reason for not using Easystart is the explosion that takes place on compression. This is far more severe and happens before the pistons are at TDC this puts undue pressure on the main bearings.

If you keep using it, it will eventually knock the ends out of your motor.

Because my injectors desperately need servicing or more likely replacing, I have been using this stuff on occassion, in order to get the boat nearer to home before dismantling the engine. But I wouldnt recommend it.

  7. I think the gearbox is a Veddette, but I'm not certain and I can find no info on it. The engine is a 1.5 BMC diesel. Anyway the reverse is fine but the forward has started to slip too much. You need to put a fair amount of pressure on the gear lever to get the forward gear engaged. When engaged no problem but its the setting off.

Now I have had a good look around the Internet for advice and I know more now than I did. But there are two adjustment screws on the gearbox. One I think is for the reverse brake drum and the other for the pressure on the clutch.

These screws are around 25mm diameter with a locking nut, one is situated at around 8 o'clock towards the rear and the other 2 o'clock on the main body of the box.

Which one is which? How much to adjust? And in what direction?

    Anyone have any advice?

  8. For mapping the canal network. Something along the lines of showing lock, tunnel, mooring, water, boatyards, diesel and sanitation details.

You can get mapping software that has the OS maps detail which is ok for mapping canals but its not specific to canals and dosent show the sort of detail that would be nice for planning extended trips.

    Is there such a thing?

Is there any clever dicks that could come up with this? I reckon it could be financially viable.

    Eh?

  9. In theory @ 3kw (90% eff.), 600 a/h will last 2 hours, in practice it will be less than half this as the batteries will become far less effecient after they have discharged and the performance will drop off rapidly and probably wont work at all after 50%.

90amp alternator working at 100% will not keep up by a factor of 3.3.

You are unlikely to knacker the alternator as the inverter will cut out probably after just a few minutes, but the batteries might get a little warm and the plates inside might buckle.

To run 3kw from a 12v system you will need far more serious batteries and charging.

watts=amps x volts, but to get 3kw out you need to put 3.3kw in regardless of volts.

A 90amp alternator @ 12volts only just keeps 1kw whilst working its nuts off!

    Not recommended.

  10. I have recently bought a narrow boat.

Please can anyone describe breifly how the battery switch may work. For instance, there are 4 positions. Off, 1, both and 2. Now 1 appears to be starter therefore 2 would probably be leisure and both, well, both.

However in what position should they be in for charging?

    Thanks

    David
