I have a scruffy looking boat (On the outside, but nice on the inside )
I would quite like a shiny boat on both the inside and outside, I can do 90% of jobs on the boat, but the biggest job of all, the exterior painting is not my bag. I tried to paint it about two years ago and it rained and ruined the job, looks even worse now than it did before I started. I have loads of other reasons why its not yet been painted With any luck, this is the year!
I was once asked not to enter a double lock by a shiny boater, next to his boat because he clearly thought the scruffiness was catching
Plenty of snobs out there from both sides, but as a general rule most of us are just about OK

There's an otter near Norbury on the SU, I'm not going to point out on here exactly where it is, I'm pretty sure I know where it lives. I've seen it and they're bigger than you think, I thought it looked like a seal! Looking straight at me. I had my dog with me wandering around and I was concerned that if the dog noticed the otter, there might be a scuffle and the otter would win (My dog would just want to play). Its about the size of a Springer Spaniel with short legs.
Its the only time I've actually seen the animal, but I see the half eaten fish on the tow path a lot.

Hi, If you say your oil was ok on the dipstick prior to starting and assuming your engine crankcase breather is not linked up in any way to the air intake then I would guess that the problem could be that something has come adrift in the governor assembly in the injector pump causing overfuelling and unable to stop the engine by usual means.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but every diesel engine that I have witnessed or stripped after an over run like you have described has received severe damage to valves/pistons/cylinder heads and had even suffered broken crankshafts.
If luck is on your side,prior to any stripping of engine,perform a compression test,this will determine if any valves were bent or cracked a piston when the engine over revved (sorry to be morbid). Get the injector pump tested. Make sure that if the injector pump requires seals that it is fitted with "viton" type seals,they are resistant to bio and low sulphur diesel fuels.

Surprisingly perhaps, most of the engines, including two of my own BMC's I have come across that have run on, have survived remarkably unscathed.
Be wary of using a rag to block the air intake, if there is no filter, as it can suck this up and cause some major damage.

Check the fitting where the sump pump (This is the usually brass affair that's used to pump the oil out of the sump when changing it).
I have come across oil leaks where the fitting work loose.

I've stopped at 17 opposite the race course with no worries, quiet part there, quite big pound, after the edges of the town.

My boat was built in 1971, and was originally a wet bilge (Now a dry one) Easy to convert, just don't send any water into the bilge, send it overboard
I suspect many different boat builders did different things and there is no definite period either way.

I push the stick to the bottom and the diesel mark is about 2-3 inches. I will have another look-

Frankly if you can't fix it with a hammer, its an electrical fault
Make sure you've got the tools to bleed the fuel system, you will require some small and bent spanners

Is something switched on?
I say this because the dash reads 11.?v and the terminals 13.7v
I agree about making sure both battery cables are properly connected and the engine is earthed to the battery as the "smoke" from the fuel pipe could be the negative connection, not good. This may have a bearing on the different reading for volts as well.

I've got an item for sale at the moment, offered to UK buyers only. So far I've had four foreign enquiries asking for quotes to post overseas - three from Hong Kong.
I'm never quite sure whether to proceed with that sort of thing. It's a loudspeaker, so shipping wouldn't be cheap. Any advice from seasoned ebayers?

I would get the postage costs, complete with insurance and tracking and quote this to you potential buyers. Check their feedback and if they still want to go ahead sell it 'em, its no more hassle going to the post office for international than national in my experience. Make sure "no returns" is highlighted in your listing

I've used Ebay for years and apart from one or two hiccups, (Got one of those hiccups on going atm ), generally its a good place to buy and sell.
Using foreign suppliers has not been an issue and I've bought from all kinds of places. China has been one of the most reliable. And I have copped the duties on occasion, always from USA and Canada.
When checking feedback, check the items and the cost which make up the feedback. Some unscrupulous sellers gain 100% positive feedback very quickly but buying a lot of stuff for 1p.

Ok I'm back from the boat, still no luck. I'm concerned the injector pump might be knackered somehow. Here's what I did...
Ok so I ensured throttle was open, and that the engine stop was disengaged. I had a fully charged starter battery in.
I unscrewed the union marked in red in the photograph, pulled the fuel line gently up and into plastic pipe which runs into a petrol can. Two injector unions were also loosened.
I turned the engine over. Fuel came OUT of the filter part near the arrow, it came out in regular spurts. Nothing at all came out of the fuel line for a few seconds, then it just started dripping out. I put my finger over the filter hole and stopped the flow of fuel from there, when I let go it hissed as the pressure escaped.
But nothing whatsoever from the fuel line apart from a weak dribble. Does this perhaps sound like a broken injector pump?
It sounds like there is air in the high pressure side.
Did you have a steady stream from the bleed screw on the injector pump?

Steel sheet is about £585 a tonne atm, not £1000!
You can get 2000 x 2000 standard plate, even 3000 x 2000 if you can handle it, as the handling is the biggest issue when re-plating, which is why 10mm thick is far more difficult than, say 6mm thick.
Cutting off the old base shouldn't take long with the right kit, but side over plating might be a bugger to clean off.
2000 x 2000 x 6 is about 190 Kgs, for a 18m (58') thats 1710kgs which is just over £1000 is steel cost. Consumables wouldn't cost more than £150 or so (Not including equipment hire).
Then theres the labour and the equipment hire, and the dry land, electricity etc. Which is where the bulk of the cost is. If you're going to use 10mm thick plate, then you will need a crane or some other handling equipment on site, which is very expensive. For 6mm a few strong blokes can do it
