  1. Hi there! - we have had three guys here that have done this in the past on 3 different boats and it does seemed to have worked very well for them. They did manage to get working professionals in who were lovely to have around the place and most used the time aboard to see if they could do it themselves or until they found a house locally.

There is a company in Dartmouth that rents out yachts and large cruisers as static holiday lets - http://www.latelet.com/rentals/26403.html - was they people I think?

If you're in a nice spot this could work really well as you can get over £100 a night and all you do is have a quick clean up between hires and change the bedding & towels.

We have had a property on www.laterooms.com since August and we have had over 70% occupancy at over £95 a night...that could be worth a try too?

    Good luck!

    Paul

Thanks for that. It was just for the long let as she wants to see if she can do liveaboard for good!!! Need to ask re insurance etc. I think

  2. Hi, we have been trying to sell our liveaboard narrowboat for the past 6 months but although 5 offers, none actually bought from the wharf where she is (but that is a whole new topic). Now have been asked if we will rent her for 6 months on a legal contract etc. Can anyone advise re rental , deposit anything really. We do need some cash as still paying her licence and trying to visit her frequently to keep her up together...help

  3. Kipor do a 6000watt inverter generator, it should run that washing machine as it's supposed to be a Inverter style for clean power. The Yellow Kipors are usually the inverter style ones.

    http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/12219360/Ki...r_Inverter.html

I have a 2.6kva Kipor RED It has run all sorts of equipment without any problem and is quite quiet and very fuel efficient. We used it a lot when first fitting out before we had an inverter and it was ran 12 to 14 hours a day for weeks on end and never missed a beat. For the money they're a bargain IMO although if we intended to use a genny on a daily basis we would have gone for Honda Possibly, but there are some other very good quality gennys available cheaper than Honda and as good

This thing is KDE 6700TA, have absolutely no idea as came from Cambridge off e bay!!! This maybe cause of divorce. Used for one day when a piece flew off into canal a rectifier???? Now has to be used via batteries. It is noisy +++++. We are currently moored for a few days next to loads of other boats and I would not like to use it until we move where there are no boats too close. Need to change my name to Desperado.

  4. Cabling is no doubt not thick enough to power tv. If you have access to a voltmeter check voltage as follows

    a) at battery terminals

    :( at socket for tv

AM sure you will find a fairly hefty drop and tv will not like it This is before you plug any other 12 volt device in> 12 volt plugs can be got at any car spares place or even halfords.

re generator, get it checked over voltage output and the cycle count scoped, off load and under load. ALso get it checked for electrical noise. U cant wright off 450.00 just like that. People rate Honda (Mostly over-hyped)< they have their problems too. Personaly I rate beta whisper range.

Thanks, will tell husband, and then stand well back!!!!

Oh dear! Your post sounds just like me when we first got our boat. Nothing seemed to work, the batteries were always flat. The fridge would go off, my laptop and phones were always flat! You will sort it out, don't worry! I always say that getting the most out of your boat electrics, it's like learning to play a musical instrument. You will get there

In a nutshell, sell the kipper genny and buy a honda genny instead.

If the telly is 12v, you could wire a 12v plug onto it (but the 12v may need to be regulated - someone more techy than me will be along in a minute to tell you how).

Laptop - take the power supply to Maplins (so they can give you the correct gizmo) and ask for either a 12v adaptor or an invertor (your choice).

Thanks for that. Spent a really happy 4 hours doing washing sat in front of machine so that I can flip onto drain, spin etc......

  5. A 6kw generator should run most washing machines, however many washing machines need a pure sinewave supply to work properly. Your 12 volt tv should work off your batteries direct. You just cut off the 12 volt lead from the transformer and wire a 12 volt lighter socket on to the cut end, and plug in to your 12 volt socket. Or get the appropriate lead with 12 volt plug already attached. You don't need to run your engine to watch telly, assuming you have leisure batteries connected of course. Your lap top should work the same way as your telly 12 volt, it should accept between 12 and 17 volts. Again buy a lead or cut the lead from your transformer and attach 12 volt plug.

Thanks for all replies. This is causing endless rows/heated discussions with husband!!!

    1. Agree re kipper, or yellow peril which, if it was not so heavy, I feel like tipping into canal. £450 under a year ago!!!!

    2. 12v flat screen telly is a Swisstec. It is at the other end from batteries (57ft boat) and he has been told that wiring is not heavy enough so that voltage is lost by the time it reaches telly???

    3. Any ideas please where to buy lead with 12 volt plug.

This boat is a money pit.

  6. Hi, got 6kw generator KIPOR bought by husband which is horrendous and noisy. Little compact zanussi w machine will not go thro programmes unless I sit and flip programmes across. Been told by someone that Zanussi's do not work thro generators. Any ideas???? Also, what do I need to work 12v telly without engine on. Do not have invertor. Do not use generator in evenings for obvious reasons, or engine......

Things are not going so well here.... Only need w machine once per week, but telly would be good. Oh yes, and how do I charge laptop up???

    Thanks

  7. We cannot understand what a leisure mooring is. Pix look as tho bird houses, sheds and liveaboards, but not residential. What is a leisure mooring?????? Keep getting e mails, but they look as tho people live there??? Dunno, anyone help?? Cannot afford this marina forever.....

  8. stencils or stick-on writing?

I've used the stick-on tapes and writing from Sacboatnames with great success. There is a huge variety of lettering styles and lots of curly bits.

Very easy to apply, even single-handed.

Thanks for that. Will prob go that route, only one word and on flat panel, so maybe a curly also!! Next task is to take tibetan prayer thingy (we have tibetan terriers/terrorists) and get made into large transfer for other panel. Not clever enough to do myself. Any ideas gratefully received.

  9. Hello,

This summer, our hull needs its first blacking since we bought the boat. There is some rust round the waterline and the anodes need replacing. Perhaps even two extra added in the middle (according to our surveyor).

Does anyone have experience of a company not too far from Warwick who would do a good job - including removing the waterline rust and whatever else one has to do to prep it - as well as do the blacking, obviously? It's not something that Kev and I have the time (or the inclination :D ) to tackle ourselves.

    Thanks.

Hi, we have just booked ours into Hillmorton Locks canal centre. Went to look and they were very helpful and friendly. Two boats in at the time we were there, and they looked good. We are neweys, however. We can stay on and have plug in electric.

  10. I have a cross bed in Honey Ryder, its good because is slightly wider than a normal double, but then its a bit shorter than a regular at only 6' long. The only downside is having to flip the bed up to have a passage through if you want to use the front doors for anything. but I think having a cross double is a great way of saving space as well as having a decent sized bed.

The bed has a slatted part and two large drawers that pull out in the direction of the passage and then behind them, under the part where the pillows go at the head of the bed theres another storage cupboard, under the matress. ( for blankets and is big enough to store a couple of small illegal immigrant people)

the matress is foam, and is in two pieces, a large piece for the part of the bed that doesnt fold and then a smaller piece that folds up over the bed, with sheets attached they kind of form a hinge so all the sheets stay in place and the mattress just flips up and rests on the bed. the board that supports the mattress, hinges up under the gunnel.

I think its roughly visible in the pics, which were taken just before we bought the boat.

the wardrobe space is fairly huge i think, we have 2 full length hanging wardobes, just to my left in the picture and just to the left of the other picture, theres a half length hanging wardrobe, the two doors above the drawers and then theres 3 large drawers by each side of the bed, plus two extra large drawers under the half hanging wardrobe.

theres 3 cupboards above the bed head in the ceiling space and theres a further two cupboards in the corner ( to my right in the picture)

this adds up to a MASSIVE amount of storage and far more than any other narrowboat ive visited. plus its all neatly tucked out of sight to make the room feel less cramped and more breathing space.

Thank you v much for this, it looks marvellous. Husband, however, is not keen and cannot see how it can be done when our bed is in centre of boat. We are not agreeing so at present am doing nothing, again. He thinks it would be hassle to make up each night (hassle for who, I wonder??) Back to the blasted drawing board again. I also think you are queen of storage.

  11.

My neighbour has a double bed on an 18" plinth in the bedroom at the stern of his boat, which is positioned lengthways. The foot of the bed can be winched up on a rope hanging from the ceiling to reveal loads of storage space underneath.

My use of woodworking handtools is not great, and I have no experience building furniture. But when i borrowed some good powertools from a friend I made some really good fitted cupboards on my boat - so much so that several people have commented that a professional carpenter wouldn't have done the job any better. With the right tools, some thought, patience and a bit of effort you can make some decent stuff.

    To Lady Muck

Thanks so much has given us some ideas. Husband v worried as he cannot see any men's clothes hanging up!!!! Love your floor, what is it? We are getting rid of carpet tiles which are permanently filthy because of dogs. Also love your shelves, but we have big window halfway along, but could have some small shelves.

  12. We've opted to hang on to lots of clothing because we can't always get to a launderette. (Or we don't have enough money to pay for the launderette! ) That way we have ample clothes even if we can only do the laundry once a month.

But we're blessed with more storage than you can shake an Imelda Markos at.

What is your secret with storage o great one????

  13. Ours has the high front, bu we have seen similar but they have chequer plate on the front, ours has steel and is 1989. On the rear end where rudder is has bolt on plate have only seen a few boats like this. Rail on roof is tubing. Large deck on front which has a plywood floor unde which is water tank. Any comments?????

Sorry, not clear. Our 1989 is steel bulkheads, steel decking apart from plywood to lift up for engine and weedbox. Dry bilges. Plywood floor at front, but absolutely dry with good drainage.

  14. Hi does anyone know what metal thickness was used on harborough hulls in the late 70s? Where they a cheap and cheerfull build or were they made by a decent builder?

  15. Thanks v much Emporer. Poor old you. We came on Nov 2nd from Milton Keynes to Warwickshire so avoided stoppages but thought I never wanted to see another lock as I am not used to them at all. My parents idea of a sunday drive was to go and peer into Foxton locks so maybe that is why I have no good memories!! I know I have to start again with the dumping of stuff, just need to get my head around it. It is really good to be able to contact folk in similar situation to us!!!!

Two pairs of jeans def not enough.

  16. I have a cupboard at the end of my bed over the bed that acts as a wardrobe... would love to see pictures of your set up though Lady M. My bedroom is as long as the bed, so it is difficult to work out how best to have things - love the idea of a false ceiling!

  17. Hi, we think we have a harborough hull, were told and says in survey that it was prob Arcrite/Harborough built. Ours is due for blacking etc hoping to do in March time, so will be able to have a good look then. Some of our paperwork refers to when she was stretched 3 yrs ago, and we were told she had to be in good condition for that to happen. Also engine was changed from BMC to Beta marine. Cannot find any history apart from what we have. As you prob can see we are neweys, but husband fairly experienced and engine crazy!!!!!

  18. Our bed is a narrow double (not a cross bed), it's pretty high up so there is storage all the way under (as well as the hot water tank that's under there, I can fit 10 of those folding plastic crates). The wardrobe is actually a rail over the bed at the bottom end, with a curtain to hide the contents. Sounds weird but actually works. Above the bed is a false ceiling with more storage above it - you can fit stuff thats as tall as a shoebox. I've found canvas boxes with zip on lids from Ikea that fit the space perfectly. I can try and upload some pics if you like.

Yes please. Thanks v much. Prob not very good at describing. Cruiser back then galley, then bathroom, then bed which is an ordinary double bed with two shallow drawers under and half wardrobe on bulkhead at foot, then saloon, then front/bow/cratch and table etc..... Bedroom has to stay where it is unfortunately. Going to Ikea this morning, feeling much more positive now. Sun is shining and storm over for now!!! We have only taken out half the dinette as storage under it needed at present, but would like to take out the rest and have hinged table thingy. Maybe I just should only have 5 pairs of jeans, 5 t shirts, etc.
