  1. That the weakness of volunteers there will only work if there want to, not to a rota.

It makes it hard for those in charge to plan coverage.

i feel sorry for some boaters who maybe disabled and maybe counting on the volunteers to be manning the locks only to find out when they get there no volunteers.volunteers are brilliant without them probably we would have no canals open. But i would think they do it because they love the canals as much as i do but it is not right that this chairman expects them do do what he wants saving money or not im sure there are a lot simpler ways to save money.like more indians and less chiefs spring to mind by the way i dont know if spring to mind was a chief .i think that many bags hanging was cos there is loads of tributes left to him in the trees along the cut

  2. Volunteer lock keepers are not only to help boaters through locks .

they hopefully will be doing litter picking ,minor painting, clearing spillways,

canal rubbish lifting and other small jobs allowing BW personel to do the more

    technical jobs.

i was told only the other day by a lock keeper that they are not allowed to paint the locks or the steps or cut the grass which is a shame as a lot of lock keepers would take great pride in their locks .Maybe now they can do it as long as they volunteer doubt it tho.

  3. Aren't some of the Chinese hulls round bowed.?

im not sure i have done image search on google and ended up google eyed looking at all the pics but not managed to find a pic im sure ive seen one on the canal but i think it was a wide beam just wanted to look what the proportions looked like on a narrow boat searching on computers is not my strongest talent thats if i have any talent

I'm tying to work out what it's advantage is

the idea being to have it 48 feet long with bedroom in bow with porthole above bed with no front deck to try and maximise internal living space

  4. I have a copy of the BW research paper, and cad drawings for the true cylindrical bow shape, if you want them.

By the way it has nothing at all in common with the underwater bulb seen on ocean going bulk carriers.

There are some horrendous bow shapes out there, like the one pictured, can we have a competition on this, i know a real nasty one.

please that would be great. its not the eco hull im after nor the canoe front i would like it nearly a semi circle from plan view.

  5. I believe Bolin Pumps have gorn, taken over and dumped.

anyother pumps available out there beside bolin im thinking of using a heatexchanger from engine to calorifier then to rads so can have rads working while engine is running but would need some type of pump to push water round rads not decided wether to go solid fuel or diesel for second coil

  6. I had my swans neck shear in the same place as yours.

To fix mine I used a 9" grinder and cut off the part around the rudder bar at deck height. This left enough of the rudder bar sticking up so I could cut the top flat, fit a new bearing and weld the original swans neck back on.

No need to get the boat out of the water.

    Casp'

agreed i posted a thread about swan neck let me know if i can help i dont do the welding but could put you in touch with someone who does

  7. Classic error in Thornes Lock today. Too busy showing crew a handspike in the top gate to notice the boat had drifted rearwards far enough for the swans neck to become trapped under the bottom gate walkway and snap off. It did so after holding the rear down by about 8in which fortunately wasn't enough for any water ingress into the hull.

No amount of fishing with magnets found the arm; so it's down there somewhere. Trouble is, as it's a river lock there's about 10ft of depth as a minimum. Thanks must go to the boat who breasted us up and brought us safely back to the mooring.

So - the questions are; how do I get this assembly apart? What am I likely to find inside, and where can I source a replacement neck and bar?

    Cheers,

    Dave

hi its possible i can help you with replacement swan neck depending on how quickly you need this sorted the photo you have posted looks like the top bush will come off maybe two screws maybe 9 o clock and 3oclock bit difficult to tell without removing paint once you have this paint removed with scraper wire brush nitromorse you will be able to tell, when this is off you may be able to shorten slightly the next bush if the bearing is not set tight to top with careful cutting with grinder with stainless cutting blade in it may then be possible to drill and tap top of spigot for decent bolt then attach new piece of spigot and weld round the sides the bolt is just to add a bit of central strength it is difficult to say without seeing it cleaned off where on calder and hebble are you

  8. My BSS (22' basic GRP cruiser) expires in July and the guy who advertises in our boat club mag hasn't responded to the couple of emails I've sent him.

Can anyone recommend someone in my area - I am based on Ripon Canal in North Yorkshire.

    Cheers - Jez

you could try this gent nice guy and thorough Richard Fee 07850249449 not in knasborough but not a million mile away

  9. Like most questions of this type, the answer is probably 'it depends'.

Do you mean all the wide canals in the south of the country, all in the north (including those in Scotland), or both? If both, will the boat be traveling on her own bottom between them, and if so will it be via the narrow canals (which would restrict you to 7'), or by sea? Do you want to include completely isolated waterways like the Monmouth & Brecon Canal, where you'd have to transport your boat by land to get there?

probably just north and south not including monmouth and breacon possibly do rest by sea not narrow canals just thinking before i committ myself to broadbeam

'Humber Princess' pictured passing our boat at Barnby Dun must come close....

  10. Was going to show you a picture of the collection of hand saws I own but after seeing wot other folk use I'm glad I can't get the piccies to download. :help:

power tools are ok they make life easier but good sharp hand tools set up properly are by far the best the fit is better when youve mastered them the finish with a hand plane done properly does not need sanding if it does need a sand use a cabinet scraper no dust in the lungs and superior finish cost next to nothing just needs burnishing to keep sharp sand paper is very expensive a router doesnt need to be expensive does mouldings quickly use goose neck scraper to finish rather than sandpaper an old moulding plane even second hand would cost much more than cheap router and is quite difficult to learn the technique but yet again when mastered finish is better small table saw again doesnt have to be expensive just good blade if used correctly you can make nice scolloped coving (crown moulding) cheaply plus cut accurate widths of timber my old yankee screwdriver now 32 years old is still going strong and is excellent for slotted screws which i like the look of in boats i much prefer old hand tools and enjoy using them but when i first started joinery transportable power tools were very rare and very expensive .i guess what im saying is expensive flashy tools do not make the job look better but do make it less tiring but which ever way anyone goes its all about the challenge and most of all the enjoyment

  11. I have one of those Fein mulimaster. Blinding bit of kit. Does things that are nigh on impossible by any other method. But the price of the " blades " makes them almost too expensive to use.

hi fudd im not sure if our aware but you can now by spurious blade from faithfull i think half the price and decent quality if you have trouble finding them let me know and ill let you know where i get mine i use the bosch gop and the electric equivelent ai have three of them great bit of kit and i agree festool ts55 rail plunge saw brilliant but a cheap jigsaw and a ccheap ruoter with patern bit is just as accurate if a heck of a lot slower but a tenth of the price you could also get a cheap circular saw and make a zero tolerance guide from two bits of mdf we used that method for years

  12. hi just working on boat today at dobson lock when looked up and had to clear tow path for the first time in 60 years a horse drawn boat called elland came past us what an absolute treat then right behind it pearl barley a historic working boat what a day. By he way i tidy the towpath up every day noy just every 60 years  just wondering who else saw it my only problem was no camera

  13. How far did you get? :captain:

hi sorry for not replying sooner moved up to up to field locks at esholt hoping to go up to dowley gap shortly sorry didnt have time to chat had to try get forward with the wind blowing us about a bit all the best with your boat renovation

  14. hi thinking of moving up from Rodley to Skipton bit by bit do i need to give notice for certain locks eg field lock three rise and five rise and if so what notice or if you know where i can find this up to date information that might save you all a load of typing to help out a novice dim wit

  15. Coo you took a risk there young Bob,brushed very close to the health and safety mob on here.Luckily you gave out the risk warning bit.

you could try making a mop from a pair of old jeans as the inside then a strong piece of lint free cotton try as small area with a mix of raw linseed oil with same amount of turpintine not white spirit if really dirty use cigerette ash in small amounts as an abrasive. blizzard is quite right with the vinegar usually white vinegar which is used in most pickled onions its a really good cleaner for wood finishes .If you need to use a new panel you can darken it by putting in a tent made of plastic sheet then place a dish of ammonia in tent with oak seal end of tent and leave for few hours just keep checking colour and take out when right colour reached .DO NOT BREATH ANY OF THE FUMES OR YOU WILL BE AWAY WITH THE FAIRIES
