  1. I can see the argument for leaving the gate open, i do get it, but a uniformed approach is fair for everyone, and shutting the gate is etiquette, not yours, you do as you wish bcos you have your theory. I can live with it, I have a nice time anyway, and the selfishness of some small minority of boaters will not bother me.Single handed is a reason for you not wanting to help other people maybe, or maybe thats the reason your single handed lol.

hi tim not wanting to sound like im kissing you know what but you will find that if you are ever having problems you will be glad of someone like carl who will always go out of his own way to help any boater thats in trouble he also has a great deal of experience on canals and is well worth listening to then as he says then adapt it to suit yourself .

  2. This is the way I see it,by the end of next year I will be paying almost £800 for an End of Garden Mooring plus my rent to the Landowner plus my License fee to CaRT.Locally there are several CCers/Cmers who obviously moor the towpath side,at the moment I do not wish to moor on the towpath for several reasons those being I have security, car parking and shore power. However this may change because I have no security of tenure as I don't own the land I moor against.I may well become a CCer/CMer in the future who knows.I don't particularly care if someone wishes to moor and live on the towpath as long as they are not causing a nuisance or obstructing my passage along the cut. What does p#ss me off is the deliberate overstaying on water points, visitor moorings, lock moorings and too close to bridge holes and blind bends.I don't phone the authorities I do something about it myself, they get asked to move.I don't care if they can't or won't pay for a mooring or they don't move that often,I just want to use my boat and have a decent community about me.I say live and let live and have less interference from the authorities.I don't want to go back living in a soulless town on a soulless street with all the bickering from the neighbours.

:clapping: well said and well put sir

  3. I am not disagreeing but qualifying a little

But the rules have not changed significantly within the last x amount of time that most of us have been boaters. Our own situations might have changed, often through no fault of our own, but that doesn't mean that it's right or fair to expect the rules to bend to suit our own circumstances.

I have only been canal boating for eleven years or so but the lassey faire that used to exist no longer does. I bought a Springer out of a local marina that had no BW Licence and did several rings whilst bringing it up to boat safety standard, the BSS having just been implemented, before licensing it.

But the point is, the rules as they stand are clear, and something that we all, as boaters from all walks of life and using the canals in many different ways, knew about beforehand and signed up for.

That clarity is only arising now, with the various court cases, based on what BW dreamt up over the years that some swallowed as gospel but others argued they had no right to implement.

I was advised, by the last of a local canal carrying family, that end of garden moorings used to be free of a BW charge. Times have changed. I am reluctant to see further change in the same direction as I can see the end of my boating days coming.

If we show that we as a group cannot play nicely with the toys we have, and live within the rules set for us, those toys will be taken away, those rules will change, and those choices will be lost. For everyone.

There seems to be an attitude progression towards an acceptable 'one size fits all' type of boating with no room for the past variety with villification of those who do not fit the perfect pattern.

I wish that everyone would look at things objectively and with the view that if they cannot comply with the set rules, then they go another route. Even if that means making hard choices, and then stepping back and lobbying for change in the right ways.

Change is inevitable and everything gets improved to its detriment with hindsight. Be careful what you wish for. Whatever lobbying gets done will likely upset another minority. Its not usually the majority that rule (probably as well contradictarily) but those who shout loudest. The status quo has much to commend it IMHO.

id give you a greeny but dont know where they are lol

  4. Morning all.

I have a NiMH battery that wont take a charge. Is there a way of refreshing it? A new one is about a £100 so i dont want to just lob it. Thanks

    Steve P.

you can buy batteries for festool from allbatteries.co.uk i have bought them for my festool stuf and they are sound and nowhere near £100 hope this helps . By the way i agree with the post that says about refreshing dont even try it

  5. I hear what your saying and I agree.

CRT do need a foolproof system of monitoring though, they don't have one at the moment.

i agree with both of you but surely its up to crt to do the work like all of us who are working do .I dont ask someone who im working for at their home to sweep up after ive finished working for them. When i retire i want to do what i want such as keep a journal of places visited or not, my decision not crts.they are getting paid to sort things out so let them sort it .Let all us boaters just enjoy boating and get on with enjoying it taking everyone as they come and not judging someone just because of where and how long they moor for life is to short

  6. While I do not have any problem personally with this idea if I was a lone female CC'er or indeed had a specific reason why I did not want "somebody" to know where I was I would be extremely concerned that my location could be tracked. By "somebody" I do not mean the authorites but I am thinking of people who may potentiall have someone stalking them for all the wrong reasons - this would equally apply to many males as well of course.

One of the great attractions of the canals is that you can literally get lost in the middle of nowhere and not really care where you are exactly apart from the vicinty of an attractive tree or a view on the horizon.

    :clapping: :clapping: completely agree

Get a piece of plate or mirror glass, which is always dead flat, tape on a sheet of abrasive, 150 grit will restore an old mangled chisel, and get your angles back, 400 grit will put a lethal edge on it ( don't run your finger over it please, a fountain of blood is not nice )

Remember to take the burr off the back edge, one side of the paper is left untaped at the edge of the glass, so you can stroke both sides of the cutting edge while it's still in the guide, a couple of strokes on alternate sides removes the burr.

all the ways shown are excellent ways to sharpen your chisels with a guide is good but i find free hand better the next stage for the glass is a metal polish on the glass gives the blade a mirror finish. Oil stones good water stones i find excellent it doesnt matter which method you use as long as you enjoy it and you get the edge you require.I prefer the sharpest and straightest edge on chisels to give crisp square holes and sockets ,plane blades i take a small round on corners to stop lines on large flat panels and on cabinet scrapers a good burr put on with round knife steel much better than sanding but i also use sandpaper

  8. Tim,

No problem; it wasn't taken personally.

My point is, which would you prefer to read:

  9. I haven't fallen in - yet - but I have been in voluntarily. It was utterly disgusting. On the first day I picked up my own boat, I promptly threw the keys in the cut while jogging back to it to grab a coat before going to the pub. So there I was, locked out of my own boat while trying to show it off to friends in almost the middle of nowhere on the first day of ownership.

I stripped down to my tights and tshirt and went fishing for the keys along the bottom of the canal with my feet. I never did find them but the memories of that sludge and the cold dank canal lapping around my neck is still with me :-)

In the end, someone walked to the nearest marina, who sent someone with bolt cutters to lop the padlocks off.

   that made me chuckle underwater ballet dancing

  10. I had a Sabb HG 18hp twin in a 40' Peter Nicholls hull and it pushed it along nicely, plenty of black smoke on full revs, so probably a touch over-propped.

Sounded nice though, 'melifluous' as a reviewer once described it.

Easy to repair as they're built like a motorbike engine where the barrels lift off the crankcase without having to remove the whole lot. I had the cylinder block metal stitched due to frost damage, new rings, gaskets, timing chain and valves reground. Parts cost a fortune (compared with my old Triumph Bonneville) but were readily available from a place in Southsea, Hampshire.

Unfortunately, this was in 1992, so can't comment on parts availability today.

when did they stop manufacture and how much do you think the 10 hp engine would cost
  11. The Sabbs most commonly found in narrow boats were either (in my experience!) a single version of "a bit less than 10HP" or a very nice sounding twin of "a bit less than 20 HP". Someone will know the exact models and powers.

I believe the single was available quite a lot longer than the twin.

The twin could give the right hull a very good turn of speed, and sound remarkably "traditional".

We have been told Jonathan Hewitt at Union canal Carriers is "the man" for these engines - I have a feeling that some boats in the UCCCo fleet may still be Sabb powered, but could be wrong on that.

    EDITED:

Looks like last produced was the "single" GG model, quoted in a reference I have found as 10HP @ 1,800 RPM

would that size of engine 10 hp push a narrow boat say 56 foot along or would it struggle what would you say is the max length that the single cylinder 10hp would push
  12. Matty I don't mean to sound harsh but why should the taxpayer pay for you to set up your own business, i am sorry you are out of work but starting a business with no personal investment seems to me doomed to failure. I was accosted by two teenagers who leaflet dropping the village looking for work , anything from car washing, to ironing, gardening, they were seeking money to buy equipment to set up their own holiday home cleaning business. Have you considered something similar maybe linked to the business you were hoping to set up? You never know one of the recipients might be a potential investor.

did you give them any work they could do to let them earn some money.

  13. After reading of some water tank horror stories I deciced to clean my boats integral tank (it is 20 years old, I have had it for 1 year).

Good news, when I lifted the lid it looks as though it was blacked recently. I emptied it, dried it and put on another coat of potable blacking.

Do I need to add anything to the water when refilling or is it ok to use straight away?

i think also some people use a small amount of bleach to a tank of water i dont know the amount but im sure someone will know on here i think that is what you were asking

  14. It doesn't have the cabin you describe, but Jebus which is now moored between Calcutt locks and Napton Junction perhaps has round bow you are after.

    original.jpg

    thanks thats a handy picture

I have a copy of the BW research paper, and cad drawings for the true cylindrical bow shape, if you want them.

By the way it has nothing at all in common with the underwater bulb seen on ocean going bulk carriers.

There are some horrendous bow shapes out there, like the one pictured, can we have a competition on this, i know a real nasty one.

cheers for your help is the bow similar to post number 36 if so would you send drawings if poss thanks
