  1. Can anyone explain how the ESC battery master switch is desgned to operate. It is for use with 1 alternator and 2 batteries.

The bit that snags me is how the unit allows the facility for not only charging one or other of the batteries or both together but also how it allows the 2 batteries to be connected together in parrell thus operating both batteries simultaneously to supply the electrical load e.g. connected across an invertor?

In addition, where can I obtain cable sizes and current carrying capacity and volt drop per cable length?

How can I determine if the alternator fitted if machined sensed or battery sensed

    Thanks

  2. Below I reproduce the content of my emails to the IWA and the associated regional and branch chair in volved in a meeting with the police about incidents on the Ashton canal.

I am disapointed the IWA have not made any response and I wondered if any here can answer the questions I have raised?

"Having Just got the latest copy of "Waterways" I read with interest the item on the Ashton Canal.

The article clearly makes the point that boaters regularly experience difficulties, of a serious nature, on this canal.

Having alerted us to the fact that the police will try to assist (but probably wont be able) and BW just want to know of the difficulties, how does one find out, without travelling the route, what is:

    a) The problem? At what time of the day/night do they occur? c) Is it a season related problem (e.g. school Holidays)? d) What can individual boaters do to minimize the difficulties?

This is import to me as my wife and I both aged 68 want to travel this way in September this year whilst doing the Cheshire Ring."

  3. So far we have always managed to find the BW water and chemical points.

But what is the position if one has to use one of the commercial operators shown in the paper guides i.e. boatyards/marinas. Do such places make a separete charge for each facility used? If so what are the approx costs?

  4. Many thanks for all your comments and information on this topic.

This is a job I still have to tackle. But in the original question I should have continued as below.

I have short arms and little legs (no comments please) when approching bridge holes I like to look down along the side towards the bow. To do this means, because of my arms, I move the tiller and lose my track through the bridge. Can one buy or make a device that fits over the tiller handle with a swival and a short extension piece that would allow me to move my position without moving the tiller?

  5. What methods are used in fitting rudder and rudder post to a steel n. b.?

What I am trying to establish is; my tiller arm ends in a welded metal cap, a bolt then passes through this and I assume secures the tiller arm to the rudder post. The question is; if I remove the bolt, taking off the capped tiller arm (to replace the packing in side) will the rudder drop thorough the hull and into the canal?

  6. I want to replace the painted wooden facing fitted to the stern rail it's flat timber that's 10cm wide and goes around the cruiser stern, which is square in shape.

It looks like it's soft wood, and I would like to replace it with something that looks a little posher, some kind of hard wood that could be stained and polished perhaps. Any suggestions.

    Thanks.

  7. Link below to AR Peachment website that lists all the UK dealers/service agents for Nanni.

    Hi Terry.

Followed up on the Peachment info. Tried to contact a dealer in my area but they never returned the calls. It was the same with making contact with Peachment direct. Good initial response but they too failed to respond with promised return calls. Tried again yesterday and made some progress. Did manage to resolve one problem concerning the oil used in the TMC 40 manual gearbox. At first they insisted that it should be ATF, eventually they confirmed that the earlier boxes did use engine oil (mine is 6 years old) this has been confirmed by the previous owner of the boat.

Thought this might help somebody else.

  8. Can any one help with servicing information for a Nannidiesel Engine Model 3.110HE? Similar infor mationis also required for the mechanical gearbox which is TMC 40

For example: Filter types. Oil Grades and capacities.

    Hour Meter Problems:

Anybody any experience of the electrical control side of the engine. It has a simple key start with a separate engine stop button. It's fitted with a round faced rev counter with a combined hour meter. One of the problems is that the hours do not display every time the engine is run. May be a week later the numbers come back clear and bright and have advanced showing that the recorder is still functioning.

Any clues as to what could be wrong? The external connections have been checked and are sound. The rev counter works fine.

  9. I think the Trent lock info is out of date - a while ago on the Narrow Boat World website it was being reported that all locks above Newark no longer had lock keepers - they had been withdrawn - so these locks are now boater operated.

Many thanks to those who supplied me with "Lock Info".

Having checked; after Gunthorpe, Stoke Lock & Holme Lock have lock keepers. Sawley has a keeper uptill 6 pm. All other locks are boater operated.

We hope to make passage from Doncaster to Nottingham starting on Monday 13th June (good job it's not a Friday). My captain tells me it's a neep tide so it wont be as fast as it can be, hoping to arrive Nottingham on the Friday.

At Nottingham we have a change of crew and then off we go on the Trent and Mersey. If we leave early on the Saturday, I hope to be somewhere near to Rugeley on the Monday evening. At this time the Nottingham crew "sign off" and I hope to make it the rest of the way to Macclesfield single handed. My wife is not too happy about this, but Liverpool won the cup and I think I can do it my way!

  10. Starting at Gunthorpe Lock we shall be going on (is it upstream) to Nottingham and on down the Trent Mersey to Hardings Wood. A couple of questions for the more experienced boater.

Q1. Gunthorpe has a lock keeper but how many other locks to Nottingham are also manned, and what is the routine for using them?

Q2. In those none lock keeper parts, how difficult/heavy are the locks to operate, accepting that the river Trent section and the Trent and Mersey change from a wide water way to narrow at Burton on Trent.

Are the locks on this section (to Burton-on Trent) of the journey simalar to the Locks on the Leeds Liverpool i.e. wide and very heavy?

Q3. what other problems might an inexperienced boater have to deal with.

    All comments welcome.

  11. Hi.

Is there a formula for determining what anchor goes with what length of boat, the boat in question being a 32ft steel narrow boat?

When I asked at a chandlers, they looked at a chart and said 12KG, but is there more to it than that?

Because of space, I did think of a "Folding Grapnel Anchor"

In normal usage on rivers e.g. Trent, what length of chain and rope would be required with an anchor?

  12. Hi. Many thanks for all the info and comments on buying a used NB.

I have been looking at couple of Springer built boats (27ft-33ft). Some have engines described as; Volvo Penta 2000, they appear to be a 2 cylinder water cooled engine driving through a conventional gearbox and prop shaft. The owners of the boats canot give me any confirmation of the model nor anyother details. I have looked on Web to try and get some information but I cannot find any details. The ones I find are Volvo Penta 2000 but the have an "S" drive unit.

    Can you help?

  13. Some questions on buying used NB (Steel)

Q1 When buying a used NB, who would pay for the boat to come out of the water for survey and who pays for it to go back, particulary if the sale does not proceed?

Q2. What are the for's and against Springer built boats?

Q3. Chemical Toilets: Is it true that there are more facilities for emptying Chem toilets than there are pump-out facilities? If this is not the case why do so many boats have chems.

Q4. What is more advantagous for heating hot water: A straight forward gas water heater or a calorifier or a combined heating system?

Q5. Gearboxes. Are mechanical boxes less troubelsome than hydraulic units?

  14. The gentle run from Alvechurch into Birmingham has no locks or moving bridges - just Wast Hill Tunnel - and takes about 4 hours. Another 4 would see you to the Black Country Museum at Dudley with just 3 locks whichever way you go - up Smethwick onto the Old main Line, or Brades (which includes a 2 lock staircase) or Factory Locks at Tipton. From there, back down onto the Main Line and then through Netherton Tunnel and round to Merry Hill will also take about 4 or 5 hours with just one more lock at Parkhead Junction. So if you like short days you can make a week of it and really relax!

Can you find some younger and more energetic friends to share (well I mean do) the hard work?

Thanks Paul (and to all who responded). Much food for thought and I will have to look at the guide books for that part of the world.

  15. Our boat will be relocting to Alvechurch.

Can any one give details of any 1 week cruise itinarys which can be taken from Alvechurch (out and back) without the prospect of having to go through a large number of locks in a week.

With a crew of 2, both over age 68, my wife and I find ourselves a little worried as that area appears so heavly locked and we have no experience of this part of the system.

    Thanks.

    DavidK65

  16. Simple answer  -  yes . Have done it single handed many times  there are a number of the lock pounds that you can stop in or even overnight if you have had enough . Its a lot quicker going up the flight than down - due to leaking gates and therefore self emptying locks . The ground paddles can be hard work on some of the locks as they are rather stiff. There are good visitor moorings below the top lock and below lock 29 by the Queens Head Pub so I use these as my starting points. If single handed usually do the 30 in about 5 hours , if two handed have done it in just over 3 hours.

    Hi Richard.

Many thanks for the information. Been a great help. Thank you.

  17. NO, it doesnt mention much at all does it (  Comastic - Vinyl Tar Coating)

I have now contacted the manufacturer and they have emailed me the Health and Safety Data. Very scary stuff.

My Doctor has now confirmed, having seen the data, that it was the blacking that was responsible. It's my fault I should not have proceeded without making sure I had the right protection.

I am putting that down as a close call.

If others would like to see the data if they email I will send it to them.

  18. Hi David

What was the blacking you used?

    Hi Richard

I know it sounds daft, but I don't know. I am trying to find out who the manufacturer is. Our boat is part of a syndicate owners scheme and the paint was on board and had been used before and some details could not be read. I think the colour of the container was gray. Talking to a scientific friend of mine, he asked if I got any of the product onto my hands. The answer is yes I did, I did not wear gloves when applying the blacking. He told me that chemicals can enter the body in this way.

  19. Whilst applying blacking, above the water line (a task I had never done before), I worked from the the tow path out in the open air. As I worked, I was aware of a very strong vapour smell being given off from the paint, indeed passers-by comented on the strong smell of paint.

Before use, I did attempt to read the instructions on the can, but because it had been used before part of the instructions where obliterated by spilled paint. However, being out in the fresh air I thought I would be OK.

Later that night I realized I was not OK because I became violently ill. This lasted from 11-oo O'Clock at night until 8-00 O'Clock the following morning when the vomiting stopped. I was so weak I have very little recollection of how may family got me off the boat and home. Being the Easter weekend my wife had little success in getting a doctor, and 5 days latter I am only just begining to feel well again.

Of the five other people on the boat no one else was effected, we all ate the same evening meal, I was the only involved in the painting. What did I do wrong?
