I have to say, I find this commonly expressed refusal to put the heating on when its cold for no other reason than the date, totally perplexing.

I accept and understand it is a trait of human nature but I sure as hell don't succumb to it, now that winter is closing in.

I'll put the heating on when we're cold, without considering what date it is. But we certainly don't need it on at the moment.

Being cold simply isn't for boaters its reserved for people who live in houses. Plenty of stoves on round here, its better than a month ago with that obscene heat, this is much nicer :D

We're in a house. No heating needed, we're plenty warm enough despite the temperature outside being about 14 at the moment.

Of course it was wasted money, what planet are you on? To normal logical people it was a total waste of money. Sorry to say.

I'm on the planet where learning is important, where gaining experience is important, where having a go at making your dream come true is important and having some happy memories to look back on is important, especially where Paola and Calranthe are concerned. That's one thing we learnt when my husband had a stroke last year - health is far important than money.

Lol, I just can't see how people can't get their heads around the waste of money this has been, in my opinion this is the perfect example of how not to buy a boat. All they have to show for it is a broken boat. It must just be me looking at it normally and not through rose tinted glasses

No, what they have to show for it is happy memories, and the fact they now know they can make their dream come true. One day. Money comes and goes, memories stay and can help you through tough times.

And what is your budget for this one?

And what business is that of yours?

I do not in any way regret Kathleen (oh that is the post they were referring to Mike) I think Mike and others understand this was a positive experience for both myself and wife that we would not put a money figure on, it is still a GRP boat for us and yes a diesel (even though it is curious nearly all the GRP boats we saw going up the TMC were outboard petrol including a nice 27ft Norman.)

Some understand some will not I have learnt that.

Here is our shopping list for the next boat.

A good solid table (that is not the main bed)

A main bed in a cabin or at least setup at all times (not a corner bed you have to slide on/under)

Diesel Engine preferably 2 but with good economy perkins or volvo with good service history.

    Preferable shaft driven

    Displacement hull

    Heating

    Shower

A boat that can handle rivers and grow towards coastal.

Either a way for Paola to get on and off the boat easy (side door or transom or low level back) or a superstructure that can be modified without too many issues.

Solo mooring friendly as in easy access for pilot to the outside, hopefully Paola will be up to taking over but if not I need to be able to get out of the cabin easily to rope us up, Kathleen was great for this.

Apart from a few brain burps where I didn't notice a boat was petrol when looking got a bit of tunnel vision :) the search is going well.

This time we are focused on Paola's appointments gives us time to look into it all even if it means waiting till the tail end of the year and for use next spring.

Hopefully you'll find the right boat, at the right time for both you and Paola.

Well my advice to return the boat for a refund only turns out to have been good advice in retrospect and in the light of subsequent events. Had you done as I suggested you might still today have never had a boat, missed out on some valuable boating experience in your own boat, and still be wishing you hadn't returned Kathleen.

And wouldn't have learned that the style of boat was unsuitable for Paola's needs. All valuable experience.

  6. If my late father-in-law had had a boat, it would have looked just like this one. We tried to help him, but he wouldn't allow us - and we know other people thought we were cruel for "neglecting" him. Social Services weren't interested. If anyone turned up who could help, he wouldn't answer the door. How can you force someone to be helped, particularly if you know it's going to make them even more ill or unstable? She isn't hurting anyone - neither was my father-in-law.

Certainly, what people say or write is open to interpretation by those who hear or reads it, yes. I interpret Lady G's post which was quoted above in a different way from you.

What about "Trained intelligence officer"? Do you mean that you are one? If so, it sounds a fascinating job.

It was a very interesting job. Unfortunately, circumstances changed and I moved north. Now I'm retired from all paid employment, and enjoying life.

I'll bet you find it difficult to switch off from your work!

Rule 1, never take work home with you. But perhaps I just read things and don't take them at face value the way some people do. Just the way my mind works, which was why I enjoyed my job.

Gosh, you're in a suspicious mood this morning! Let us not brand the lady as a potential arch-criminal of the inland waterways before she's even bought her boat.

Trained Intelligence Officer. It's not what people say, it's the way they say it - or what they don't say, and how they don't say it.

  9. Just now, Athy said:

It doesn't read that way to me. She said: "No pootling about on CRT waters till discovered".

She actually said "So no pootling about till discovered", which reads to me as if she'd happily pootle till she was discovered if she could.

We have no evidence that Lady G is intending to avoid paying due fees for her navigation.

Then LadyG needs to word her posts more carefully, because that's how it read to me.

Good idea but a lot of work to create such an item. What I have in mind is along the lines of what I started this thread off with - not much longer  longer! Just pointers for folk to consider then they can do more research if they wish.

    haggis

And then they'll start a thread asking the question they came on here to ask in the first place.

  12. The problem is that people react in different ways to advice. Some, like my brother-in-law, see it as being told what to do and put their fingers in their ears. A lot of people also won't notice "pinned threads". They've come on here to ask a question, and ask it they will, no matter what.

The two example threads being quoted show two very different ends. Starcoaster did what everyone told her not to do, and seems to have made it work very successfully. MissMax did what everyone told her not to do...it doesn't seem to have ended well.

At one time we were seriously thinking about buying a boat to live on. I didn't ask questions on here, I simply read every thread as it came up, whether it seemed relevant or not. I also chatted to boaters I met whilst dog walking along the canal, again not asking questions, just general conversation. We also volunteered, through this forum, to help out with locks. We very soon realised that boat owning was not for us - in fact, boating is not for us, though we still love walking along the canal, and very much love meeting up with friends who do have boats.

    Just my opinion :)

  13. We have just had one of these Smart Meter things fitted in our house. I find myself watching it whenever I go in the kitchen. I have noticed that when I first switch the electric oven on, the meter shows a little over 2kw. Once the required temperature is reached, it drops down to just over 250w and stays there. Smart Meters - better than telly...:)

    5 minutes ago, Psycloud said:

Gas ovens can be a bit of a dark art - we find that whatever the recommended cooking time/temperature is, add an extra gas mark and an extra 15 minutes.  Once you get to know your oven it's not actually that bad :)

We have an electric fan oven and I have to treat it in a similar way - use the temperature recommended for a normal oven and cook for a few minutes longer.

Someone then informed me of an alternative meaning  used by low-lifes. I was quite clearly not seeking to offend anybody.

I was aware as a child (born in the 50s) that it was not a nice word to use, especially when talking about people of African origin.

oh dear, like i said get your facts right.

yes indeed it is his son but it is the ex members boat

Does it really matter whose boat it is? The story was put on here by someone who was on the boat, who is not banned. You were trying to say that the story couldn't be on here because the only person who could post it on here is banned. Not correct, and caused a lot of confusion.

There was a strange and pointless irony by GG in effect outing a previously banned members new forum name and I saw no veiled threat just a suggestion that some bread or cake making would be nice.

I think FirstRateFirstMate is the banned member's son, rather than a banned member with a new forum name, which obviously no one would be aware of. But GG seemed to be saying that no one on here would be aware of this incident because it happened to a banned member. Hence the confusion with people thinking FRFM had been banned since putting his post up.

I also saw no veiled  threats to GG, just people trying to understand what was going on.

  17. You may not realise how far the noise from your engine carries. I walk along the canal on my way home from work, often passing several moored boats. Some of them have their engines running. They're usually pretty quiet, but I walk up the hill to our rented house, three or four minutes from the canal, go out in the back garden and I can hear the engines, which sound far louder than when I walked past them. If we have the living room windows open in the summer, we can hear if any boats have their engines running. No, we didn't buy a house by the canal, we rented a house in a town we didn't know at all - we didn't know till we'd moved in that there was a canal, let alone that we were only a few minutes walk from it. No, we're not complaining, just saying...

I have removed them from Activity Streams. They have been reduced to 3 on the main page and have been resized to 200px. I hope this is seen as a reasonable compromise bearing in mind 5x Gallery Images were displayed horizontally for years prior to the upgrade and as such, we have reduced the number of images displayed. We are looking into implementing a plugin to allow users to hide it if they wish.

    RichM

Gallery images were only displayed on the Home/main page prior to the upgrade though, not on the VN. Glad they're gone from the VNC now!

  19. If the gallery pictures were at the bottom of the page, as they are when I use my phone, they would annoy me less. I'm really not interested in seeing a photo of RichM's laptop. At home I use Wi-Fi and my laptop, and data usage is not an issue. But at work I don't have Wi-Fi available, so I will no longer be looking at the forum during lunch time, as I always have done previously.

So it's not just people out on their boats who are affected by this issue.
