In other words "It's our forum, we'll be nasty to newbies if we want to be, and if you don't like it you can f*ck right off!" -- is that a fair summary of what you've just said?

The reason these accusations keep coming up year after years is that they were true then and they're still true now -- and every time somebody points out that it might just possibly be better to be nice to people instead of nasty (didn't somebody famous say that in the past?), they in turn get attacked by the usual (relatively small number of) culprits -- who are the ones dishing out the abuse.

Who it has to be said often can't stomach it themselves, because when accused of this they simply reply with more abuse, often personal... 😞

And if some people -- especially newbies -- do get fed up with this and leave the forum, they turn round and say "Ha, we got rid of them, good riddance to bad rubbish -- we won again!".

It's the mentality of the playground bully... 😞

No, that's not what I said, and I see no particular nastiness to newbies at the moment. This forum goes through phases. Someone complains about bullying or rudeness, everyone gets all over protective, demands that the forum needs to be changed, people who don't want it to change get upset. Then it all gets forgotten, things calm down and the forum goes back to being the mainly calm, friendly, helpful and pleasant place it's been for years. In most cases the person who made all the noise about how dreadful the forum is realises that it isn't that bad, and ends up staying.

I've been a forum member since 2006 I think? I don't think it's changed that much at all apart from people now talking about lithium batteries...

It's mostly the same topics and the same old arguments going around and around, newbies popping up and some getting offended. Twas ever thus in my opinion.

That's pretty much what I was trying to say, but you said it better!

If that is indeed the idea, it's a logistically poor one.

It works extremely well in every Aldi I've been in, and I shop in Aldi every week. The idea is to avoid long queues at the checkouts caused by people packing bags there. At the start of Covid, people with cars were asked to take their trolleys to their cars and pack there, leaving more space at the packing shelf for non car drivers. That was what a lot of people were doing before Covid, and are continuing to do.

Unfortunately a lot of things that make sense to LadyG have been proven to be downright wrong and occasionally dangerous.

When it comes to technical subjects Lady G is just not prepared to listen to more experienced or more knowlegeable boaters than herself - in her mind she can do no wrong.

In this case she is listening to her electrician. He found these batteries, he has disconnected them from the system, he is happy to leave them in place as ballast. Her business, not anyone else's.

I don’t know it in detail, if these were the original bow thruster batteries I imagine they would be next to the Bow thruster, in a compartment just behind the gas locker, or if extra in one of the well deck lockers for ventilation and easy access and not hidden behind a panel inside or outside the boat, it’s common sense and quite puzzling why they have not been found by all the electricians, people do not hide batteries behind panels so they can’t be found or more importantly can’t be easily maintained.

The other thing she says is that they were Sulphating so the smell would quite noticeable to anyone near them.

The previous owners friend has asked LadyG  for more detail to where they were found all she says is bow.
      It all makes little sense??????

It makes sense to LadyG. That's all that matters. The batteries, which were not the original bow thruster batteries, have been completely disconnected now, but are remaining in place as ballast.

She might not be posting but she is still reading - last logged in 28 minutes ago.

Hopefully the information will help her to ask the sparky the correct questions.

That's why she and Tony have been talking, and why Joe's information will be so useful.

However, It would seem she would rather trust to asking questions on Thunderboat now though.

    I don't blame her.

So have I with some explanation about what it PROBABLY means. It looks like the dreaded cheap isolator switch thing may have struck again.

Hopefully it'll all help Kev if he turns up on Wednesday!

    That's the problem, who's blocked/ignored? Who's not?

I am happy to ask the previous owner further questions, he seems totally happy to talk.  He is an electrician by the way.?

I'm sure you're not blocked, Joe! If you are, LadyG is still able to read your post now she knows it's here. A friendly electrician is supposed to be visiting the boat on Wednesday, so hopefully the information will be useful to him.

    Dear LadyG,

I have this morning collared the previous owner of your boat, who by the way is one of the kindest most helpful gents in the marina.

First of all I asked him about the bow batteries. They used to drive the bow thruster but when the bow thruster was removed they were connected to the inverter situated by them, and cabin 12v circuits, and could also be charged from the stern with solar and engine. There was a fuse adjacent to the bow batteries and also an isolator. There was also a small mains charger there as well. There are hefty welding cables going from the stern to the bow for charging those bow batteries. There is also a massive earth cable ringing the entire cabin to "t" into if needed (his words). He also had a small 300watt inverter to just run the telly to save using the big inverter and so saving power. There was a voltage meter up by the bow batteries.

In the galley somewhere near the fridge was a white unit and in it was an automatic switching relay. As soon as you unplugged shore power the fridge was on 12v cabin batteries. When on shore power it powered the fridge without using the 12v batteries. That way the fridge didn't use the cabin batteries when on land-line.

    Now the stern.

You have mentioned 3 isolators in a line. 1 - Engine Starter Battery.

                                                                             2 - Domestic Batteries

                                                                             3 - Bow Batteries

ALL batteries could be charged via solar or engine if necessary by using the isolators. Or prioritising the charging of the different batteries using the isolators if necessary. Once again there are hefty cables going from stern to bow for charging.

By the way he said everything was labelled.

That's about as much as I can remember. It is unfortunate that you couldn't get a better, more direct explanation from him when you were both living in the marina.  I am aware that you have had umpteen electricians on the boat so alot of this info might be a waste of time.

    Hope this helps.

    Joe

    Thanks Joe

That rules out the chances of a charge splitter.

Now I wonder if the isolator for the box batteries is playing up. That could easily explain the low voltage.

Tony and Joe, I have messaged LadyG about Joe's post. Hopefully she'll read it shortly.

Anyway, I have made it to the Water Green Tavern and it’s the perfect pub for me.
    You’d love it.
    No frills. Friendly. Good Ales.
    And cider.

    Shuts between 3 and 5 ☹️

Oh good, sounds like it hasn't changed! I'm glad you got there in the end, and I hope you'll go back again.

yes have decided to head there now.

    ?

Hope you like it! It always used to be what we would call a proper pub, but we're living in strange times at the moment, and places aren't quite what they used to be.

  10. If you're walking along Sunderland Street (past the Treacle Tap) to go up to the Puss in Boots, turn left when you're opposite the station and go to the Waters Green Tavern. It's open now, and according to their last post on Facebook, they had two possibly interesting beers on.

Well, at twelve years old, with luck, they have a fair few years in them yet.

Our rescue kitten was 17 years when she died a few weeks back. His lord ship is 18 years old. If he dies, I will be so angry I will bloody well kill him!

Our vet told us that the treatment Eartha is on should give her an extra year. But we don't know when from... As for Cleo, she's too lazy to catch a cold, bless her. They were 7 months when we got them, they'd been dumped at the vets.

Cats have been known to live till they're 30, so you could have yours for plenty of years yet!

Yep, they come into your home, become part of your family then break your bloomin heart.

We have one left, and boy is he getting spoilt at the moment.

Sorry, one of ours was just trying to drink out of my water glass...

I hadn't had cats since I was a kid, and my first one ran away to live in a pigsty with a feral cat. After that I always had dogs, but Dave talked me into taking on two rescue kittens. Twelve years later, we couldn't imagine life without them.

Erm, yes, one of ours died three weeks ago. We are sad!

Bloody orrible little furry vermin that they are.

Oh no! I'm so very sorry to hear that. We would probably have lost one of ours if we didn't have such a fantastic vet. She's cost us a small fortune, but she's worth it. I don't know how we'd cope if we lose her.

Phew, at least MJG is no longer here eh!:)

Well yes, but there seems to have been a dramatic outbreak of Grumpy Old Man Syndrome, which is very infectious. A shame, but I'm afraid I no longer get any pleasure from this forum, and I've enjoyed my summer break from it. I think I'll extend it to an autumn break. I only came back because I was told that the result of a vote would get rid of the Political posts from VNC!

  16. 5 minutes ago, rusty69 said:

Mmmmm, your first bit doesn't really correspond with your second bit in my case.

Absolutely. The "mischief makers" are long term members who used to be reasonable, and on occasion, interested. No longer. They seem to get pleasure from being rude and insulting to anyone who doesn't agree with them, no matter what the topic is. It's changing - for the worst.

Simple. it is because you are not logged in.
Since you are not logged in there is no way for the software to know who  you are and if you have posted the required 10 posts. This is not uncommon in forum software.

But this "change" has suddenly happened, with no notification. The only change was supposed to be to the Political section.

  17. I understood the vote to be purely to hide all threads in the Political and Current Affairs section, so that we didn't all have to see the childish insults in the Brexit thread, or Parahandy's bigotted "news" threads. But they are all still there when I look at VNC, though they are "condensed" rather than "expanded"
