  1. The part of the world you are referring to is very expensive for moorings.

I think you are being unrealistic in your cost expectations.

Residential moorings are very hard to find.

The best way to find moorings is to short list all the marinas in the area and visit them in person.

Try calling your local BW office but I would look for a non-residential mooring first.

  2. I like a lot of members, have membership of several forums.

CWF is good for technical content because it has a lot of members as it has been running for a lot longer and therefore, I suspect, a greater depth

of technical experience amongst its following.

However, I find the other forums less argumentative/negative and a bit more positive and fresh.

I believe all the canal forums have different strengths and weaknesses - I guess its a bit like deciding whether to watch ITV or BBC !!

P.S my signature link is because that was my first introduction to canal forums and first loves always last the longest :) .

  3. Does it support an external aerial ??

I acquired a USB 3g modem 3 days ago, and so far I'm very impressed with it. It is MUCH faster than my home broadband which I will now ditch ASAP.

I haven't got my boat yet but expect to within a few weeks. But I have got a mooring a Shardlow Marina, and a slight worry was that T-mobile's coverage map showed the marina to be right on the edge of the good signal area. So I took my laptop and new modem to Shardlow and tried it out in three different places in the marina. It worked a treat, I got a HSDPA signal [the best, equivalent to 3.5g, apparently] everywhere, including under trees.

This deal is £29 per month for 18 months with the modem free, but I can claim a cashbackof half the rental for 11 of the 18 months - this reduces the final cost to an average of £20.14 per month. The snag with this is you only get it after 6, 8, & 11 months, and you have to remember to submit a claim including all the bills!!

It was the best offer I could find and is with Mobiles.co.uk. Before you sign up, check the terms and conditions carefully as there are naughty things hiding in there, and the headline says "half price line rental", and not "pay in full but clain cashback" The terms and conditions page is HUGE, no wonder most people don't bother.

  4. For some time now, I have been considering solar panels.

Since the rain stopped and the sun came out, I've been thinking about it again. I've surfed the tinternet but there are so many types out there and so many different prices, its all a bit confusing.

    Any advice ??

  5. Its quite possible he just wants to do some long overdue jobs before the boat is surveyed because he knows it will be picked up by the surveyor. I think all boats have jobs that need doing and often never get done until something like this jolts us out of our lethargy.

  6. We all have a right to be on the water.

The control of canoes varies depending on the attitude/experience of the instructor.

Like people on forums, some are muppets.

Most instructors will shepherd the group to the side and let the narrowboat pass, to ensure the safety

of his group, which has already been said, he has a duty of care for.

Many of these kids are the future users of our canals.

  7. I have been lurking for a while and decided to join today to add my voice.

It seems to me that people have different expectations of this forum.

This forum probably contains a pretty even cross section of the general public.

This means it contains the meek, the mild, the prim, the attention seekers and the bullies.

If I don't like something about my life, I change it.

If I can't change it because its beyond my influence and it makes me unhappy, I move on.

As another poster pointed out, there are various canal forums out there with different flavours

and styles. If you don't like this one and you are entitled to that opinion, move

on to one you like better.

Hopefully, people will then gravitate to the forum that suits them best
