  1. Mail on the Move @ www.urmail.co.uk

The mail forwarding service provided is aimed at people away from home for an extended period, and not staying in the same place, such as boat owners who are away for the summer or live aboard all year round and have no permanent address.

  2. Hi,

Thank's to everyone who has replied to this post, and to the many contributions both here and by e-mail; the list should be on line next week-end and as with the 'Launderette List' it will be available to download in 'PDF' and 'Word' format.

Someone here mentioned that there was already a list available; I looked at this site and it does not appear to have been updated recently; I will contact the owner of the web site as I do not want to step on anyones toes. But thanks to the good people of this forum I now have more than double the amount of centres than are listed on that site.

Thank's again to everyone who has contributed, but if you want your name to be added to the list of contributers please add your name or e-mail me at ken@ukcanals dot net. Replace the dot with a .

  3. Hi,

Several visiters to the UKCanals website have asked about recycling centres near to the canals. I have decided to add a list of recycling centres that are in easy reach of the canal to the website.

This of course is a time consuming job, I am now searching through Council websites to find as many as possible.

I am sure that many visitors to this forum will be aware of centres near to the canals, if you do could you e-mail me with the details. i.e. Exact location, how many minutes walk from the canal, any restrictions and where to moor.

Your help will be most appreciated and all contributers to the list will be acknowledged.

Please e-mail me at ken@ukcanals dot net. if you can help.

  4. Contact Mike Webb at Peel Holdings and he will send you a list of moorings available on the Bridgewater Canal or contact the AWCC for info on local cruising clubs as they have their own moorings.

Local AWCC clubs that I know of in that area are Sale CC, Watch House CC and Worsley CC.

    Steve

It may have changed but a while ago most of the moorings on the Bridgewater were administered by one or other of the Bridgewater boat clubs, and liveaboards were definately not allowed. The only place I have seen liveaboards is at Worsley, perhaps a good place to enquire. Add Lymm CC and the Bridgewater Boat Club (Runcorn) to the above list.

  5. There are plenty of continuous cruisers who have breakdowns and health problems - what do they do? If my friend brokedown miles from the mooring then presumably he'd be unable to return. If he or his partner had health problems and needed to return then I would vacate the mooring and would expect him to reciprocate if I were ill. Sharing anything requires that people are reasonable and flexible.

As I stated earlier - this was the other boater's idea and not mine. We're friends and nobody is out to rip the other off. Since any arrangement made between ourselves would be acceptable to both of us, and neither would make such an agreement that we didn't think was fair, then whether it's acceptable to anyone else in terms of it's fairness to either party is really not our concern.

Whether it's acceptable to BW may be another matter.

It does strike me that compared to other parts of the world, we really have a negative "can't do" culture in this country. Of course it's always wise to look at worst case scenarios and prepare for things going wrong - but how about being a bit more positive about new ideas instead of just focusing on the reasons they can't be done?

You ask in your original post and in this one 'Whether it's acceptable to BW may be another matter.' to quote BW mooring regulations :-

    DEFINITIONS

‘Boat’ means the Boat or vessel named in this agreement or

one that is substituted for it with our prior written consent

(which will be subject to the suitability of the Mooring and

payment of an additional Mooring fee, where applicable).

    3. The Mooring agreement is personal to you and you may not

assign it to any person. You may allow another person to use

the Mooring for short periods but only with our permission

which shall not be unreasonably withheld.

    6. The Boat must be properly licensed for the duration of this

Agreement. Current Mooring and licence permits must be

displayed where they can be easily seen from either side of

    the Boat at all times.

So, yes you can if you inform BW in writing and pay any additional fees; which defeats the object.

Hope this helps, I am not trying to throw a spanner in the works, but you did ask whether it would be acceptable to BW.

  6. Hi all, new to this forum and very impressed! puts canal-lists to shame! so my question is...

Well said, I am trying to make this point on the canals list at the moment, but to no avail. (Glad a newbie thinks so)

I have been given some gel sealed batterys but I am already using lead acid ones.

will it be ok if the two types are seperated into different battery banks and charged through a splitting diode from the same alternator? or will this cause problems or damage?

    cheers

    lee wells

As long as they are kept separate there should be no problem.

  7. Just because a boat is licensed as a continuous cruiser doesn't mean it can't arrange a mooring somewhere for a certain period of time. Pleny of continuous cruisers arrange winter moorings for example. What we're discussing here is the arrangment itself.
I am quite aware of that, but the op has not stated if this boat is continually cruising, the fact that he says two months on and two months off, makes me think otherwise. When continuous cruisers make arrangements to stay for a while, they make the arrangements with the owner of a mooring (marina, boat club etc) not with an individual. Also BW allow them to stay on short term moorings in the winter, for the appropriate fee.In my opinion, if the boat in question is a continuous cruiser, then he is breaking BW regulations by staying on this mooring for two months on and two months off. And as I stated in my previous post, if he is not continuously cruising then he will have (or should have) paid for a permanent mooring elsewhere.
That's one way of looking at it, but the other boat doesn't necessarily have to be half a mile up the cut - it could be anywhere. Also it doesn't have to kick a hole in their budget and could actually mean extra funding for BW through licensing a new boat. I don't see this as anything to do with loopholes or cakes, and think that a more positive attitude might see BW embrace such arangements as a way to reduce the amount of boats without moorings, by meeting the need of craft who don't neccesarily want year round moorings. In this demand driven a market economy, is seems to me that a more flexible scheme which responds to the needs of its users is well overdue.
What happens in Winter, when both boats want the mooring?
  8. Surely there is a little bit more to this. Every boat must have a permanent mooring before it can get a license, unless it is classed as continually cruising. So taking these facts, if this boat is classed as 'continually cruising', then it would be breaking BW regulations for that class if it stayed at your mooring for the amount of time you say. If the boat has a permanent mooring then the fees have already been paid to BW or there agent (boat club, marina etc.). So which of these criteria does this boat fall under?

  9. Unless there's been a change in the last 6 months or so since we sold our NB at St. Mary's marina; Fetlers Wharf and St. Mary's are not owned by the same people. Very much the opposite - they don't give each other the time of day!

Be interested to know which one is developing at Red Lion.

Apologies for the mistake, thanks for pointing this out. It is the owner of Fettlers Wharf that is developing the new marina at Scarisbrick.

  10. This time I did get a picture, so now I have to find a way of getting it from camera to my new computer.

So can anyone help with photos I could use, or can you point me in the direction of such material. IDavid.

PS Maybe you would like to email me direct instead of posting contributions on the Forum the choice is yours.

Do you not have a USB port on the camera, if not does it have a readable card memory.

  11. Hi,

All the best for the new year to those on this list.

For those interested in things oop north, the local council gave permission at last for a new 200 berth marina at Red Lion Bridge, Scarisbrick on the L & L albeit with several restrictions.

The developer is the same person who owns the Fettlers Wharf and St.Mary's marinas on the Rufford Branch.

Work starts in the new year, but no work can be carried out between March and July (the bird breeding season), according to one of the restrictions.

For those who know the area, the boating entrance will be opposite Red Lion Caravans, just under the bridge.

Updates and photos when things start to happen on the UKCanals website.

Negotiations are also taking place between developers and the land owner for a marina at Lydiate, by the Running Horses.

Both marinas should offer facilities for the 1200 plus boaters per year who will be coming this way (according to BW) when the Liverpool Link opens.

  12. for all of us on here that cannot afford a narrowboat, i have been looking on ebay for weeks and weeks for a suitable cheap cabin cruiser, now i have found four, they are in a tatty state but with a bit of a clean up they will be very good boats.

there is a loftus bennet and a callum craft, dont know the other models but i have spoke with the owner and he only wants a "couple" of hundred quid for each one.

i am going to look at one today, so will report back later on.

"grpcruiserman" this may be of some interest to you!

dont know if that link will work but if you put cruiser no reserve then they will come up.

    happy boat hunting!!.

We had a Callum craft some years ago, paid a lot more than for it, watch for loose and worn joints on the steering linkage, and scratches on the windscreen that impair your vision. Apart from that a good boat

  13. Nothing to stop it happening at all. Like most illegal activities, there'll be people devising foolproof systems already.

Every outlet that sells gas oil (red diesel) has to send in a monthly return to Customs & Excise of how many customers he has sold it to and how much to each customer, I am sure they will incorporate into the return a seperate column for private and commercial sales, with all the details of the commercial entity that it has been sold to.
