  1. Could not make it up it just goes from bad to worse. I really do believe CRT are becoming clueless Traders Have always been able to get winter moorings I guess you and your fellow traders that work hard to promote the canals have become outcasts

We have a traders licence My wife is a commission artist I am an RYA Instructor and we are Ccer's we have taken BW/CRT winter moorings without problems for the last 8 years. We got our email telling us that winter moorings would go on sale 1st October this year and that we were eligible as per usual! As it happens we are going into the Saltersford arm this winter so will not be taking up their kind offer.

  2. Just to update this thread.

This weekend we did the stretch between Clayworth and West Stockwith (and return) and had no problems at all with weed. In fact if we had not picked up a length of pea netting we would not have visited the weed hatch at all. We also learned that pea netting makes a great magnet for any weed that does exist in the canal smile.png

Today I had the pleasure to meet another forum member .... who's handle is escaping me right now but it ends in a number 2 and the forum won't allow me to seach on just "2" He had been up to the top and was back at Clayworth and had experienced no problems with weed anywhere on the canal.

I think the weed problems are gone for this year unless we suddenly get another heatwave Huge thank you to CRT for dealing with the weed so effectively and efficiently and allowing so many people the opportunity to experience one of the best canals on the whole system this summer

That will be me then!! Its actually Oasis Too the share boat that we used to be on The one that nearly got swept into the Pershore sluice stream on the Avon in 2007 and made the six O Clock news!

Anyway great to meet Cheshire Rose and we really enjoyed the Chesterfield.

  3. The river at Ely is completely covered at the moment with a thick layer of duckweed. Not just ordinary duckweed, but a much less common species, greater duckweed (Lemna polyrhiza to be technical). It closes like a curtain to an apparently solid surface as the boat ploughs through. I've never seen this before here. Does it happen every year? I haven't had a look at my raw water strainer yet......

Selby canal in same state so thick in basin did not need fenders down!

  4. Just as a matter of interest - are there any additional restrictions on a pair wanting to transit the tunnel? Or is it just so difficult that no-one does?

Could be if you want someone steering the butty a hotel pair had all kinds of problems i believe and ended up strapping the tiller straight as Bw did not appear to have H&S paperwork for this!

  5. Hi Peeps, we're en-route for Standedge Tunnel in the next 7 days or so (we're moored at Brighouse for the next day or so and haven't booked yet) and moh is getting a little nervous about the tunnel. I kind of do all the planning and research and have assured him that a chaperone will be on the stern with him (according to this thread and the CRT site) but have also said that if he's not comfortable doing it he must tell me... I said I'd check with you peeps (and will ring CRT tomorrow) that there is definitely always a chaperone accompanying the helmsman? unsure.png

You will definitely have a CRT guy on the boat with you all through the passage Its an experience we are about to repeat in about a fortnight.

Best wishes to your good lady in her recovery and its so good to see that you have had so many offers of help smile.png

  7. Well 4 weeks ago tomorrow my wife Noeline missed her footing whilst taking our Mini wire Dachshund ashore at Hopwas and fell into the canal! Unfortunately she hit the armco on the way in and broke her Femur.

She came back on board last Saturday after surgery (plate inserted) and has a further 6 weeks on crutches with a leg brace on.

We are wintering again in Elesmere so we started travelling on Sunday the 20th from Fazeley Mill Marina (Who were great finding me a mooring whilst Noeline was in hospital) via the Coventry, T&M, Staffs & Worcs and Shroppie knowing we needed to clear Tyrley before the stoppages.

Normally Noeline steers the boat and i do the Lock wheeling! So it has been a forced introduction to single handing, luckily so far without to many problems and we will clear Tyrley with plenty of time to spare.

I was wondering however if anybody would be around on Monday the 28th October, who may be able give me a hand down Audlem!

As much as anything to avoid causing to many tailbacks on what i think is half term week.

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

  8. The piling for the pontoons should be impressive. I wonder if C&RT charge by the litre for filling the pond.

Pilings/pontoons look to be well advanced in towpath side marina site! Also signs of work on the flash site construction Road in to water side construction compound at top of field and survey pegs all over field!
