I know this is getting silly, but how about an (almost) proper job!
https://m.apolloduck.com/feature.phtml?id=388276
Just over £41,500. What could you get for that in the UK?
You'd really need to live in Holland though - so much cruising water there.
They are nice.ive been on a couple. The headroom is very limited in most of the hull.

Are you sure a hose would survive an exhaust fire?
I remember being rather alarmed the first time it happened - the cast iron exhaust pipe glowed and the stainless steel chimney had turned rainbow coloured when the fire died down.
Imagine a 4" diameter blow torch with a foot of flame shooting out the end and you get the picture.
Yes I have heard of this happening. I`m not sure the rubber would survive and it could be a fire risk in the engine room. My expansion box had an inspection hatch in the bottom and I fitted a drain tap to get rid of the oily tar that built up. This wouldn't help with sooty solids though.

Cougar hose and hydraulics.0121 559 8787. internal diameter was 4" or 100mm.
The image you have looks similar.

Thanks, this seems a Good Idea.
Replacing the metal tall pipe on Reg with a length of plastic dain pipe causes a norticeable reduction in noise, surprisingly. I think this is due to the slight 'give' in the nature of the material. A length of rubber will probably be even more effective. Where did you find rubber tube that big?!
Another idea, as a couple of people have suggested to me that increasing the length of the exhaust tube is the answer, is to insert a couple of metres of stainless steel flexible flue liner in a coil into the exhaust outlet from the expansion box.
I got the rubber from a place in Cradley Heath West Midlands but I will have to search for the name. It was something like suction hose used on pumps and resisted the heat well.

On the Kromhout I used 4" straight through from the expansion/scavenging box. Two things I did reduced the noise. A rubber section in the 4" pipe near to the expansion box and a longer external end pipe. I used a stove chimney.

It is a national initiative. Check your local Fire service web site for any activity in your area.

Week beginning 24th May is national boat safety week for the Fire service.
On the 25th I will be in the area of Gas Street Basin , Birmingham offering free safety advice for things like cooking and escape plans for boat owners, including fitting free smoke alarms.
If anyone would like us to come to your boat or you are passing through the area and would like this free service please let me know.
Regards , Kevin.

I did a patch repair on the Kromhout eXhaust, Firefly was for sale at the time. She sold not long after and last I heard the engine was coming out
Richard
It was Florence you did the repair on.The engine did come out shortly afrer.New owner.

£30k plus at least £10-£15 to restore and it, by the vendor's admission, be worth £35k - £40k when done.
Not much wriggleroom there Mr Bargee.
I agree. 20 k would seem a more realistic price. Was this moored at Stourport ?

Which fittings Jacq?
Richard
On the fuel injection side. The fittings have a taper and are brass or bronze.

Could anyone recommend something to seal threads on diesel fittings?
PTFE tape seems to be broken down by diesel.
Cheers.

Well that's rather delicious isn't it?!
Any idea what engine? WFB are being terribly coy about it. Posssibly the reason it is so cheap.
MtB
Edit to add, on the WFB front page it says it's a Kromhaut! Time to start looking for cash down the back of the sofa...
I've been on this boat, its fit out is basic but fantastic. Its a well engineered boat built by a knowledgeable owner. The engine is almost a sister to mine, brought into the UK by the same person.

Well not a question as to who painted them as I have just picked them up from the artist, but thought people might like too see my lastest bits. Not tradtional but just for fun.
First an oil can.
Second a handbowl.
Final picture is on the bottom of the handbowl. WARNING it is rude.... very rude some might say. Click at your own risk!
Some fine work from Roy.

We were in the 3 Horse shoes in Frampton last week .The owners are very friendly and the food looked great.Walkable from Splat bridge or the bridge at Saul. In Frampton there is also the Bell, but I would prefer the 3 Horse shoes.

I used to own a Sheffield size boat on the River Hull in Beverley. It was called the Rising Sun.Dont know if this was the original name. It had a JS 3 in that I removed (wish I still had that)
I think it’s still there.

Its quite complicated but simple to rev it out of gear ,if that makes any sense !
When in neutral you cannot rev the engine as a cam reduces the revs to tickover. You can set the lever half in gear and the gearbox "paddles" the shaft, this allows you to reach a point where the revs go from tickover to full within a couple of MM adjustment.
Ive cleaned the injector, numerous times, refurbished the one way valves in the supply line and cleaned the pump.
The only thing I havnt altered is the spring tension on the govenor.I think Ive nothing to loose so that is next.

Ive posted a video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/Florence7245?feature=mhee You can see the engine running but Im still having trouble reving it up.If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate any help or advice.
Ive had 4 " of pitch taken off the prop as when measured it was 28 x 27. so its now down to 23 inch pitch.
Clements in St Neots did the work and I can strongly recomend them, very helpful.

Right,
I’m still having a few teething problems with the Kromhout. I’ve cleared the injector and I think that’s ok now. It starts easily and runs at tick over well. I can’t get it to rev up though.
I think it may be the governor which is centrifugal and on the back of the flywheel. It moves a collar with a cam on, back and forward. When its static the collar moves to full cam by spring tension. Adjusting the throttle lever up and down raises and lowers the fuel pump so fully lowered the fuel pump hits the cam on lts longest stroke giving a big squirt of fuel.
When its running the collar doesn’t seem to move far enough for the full cam to line up with the bottom of the fuel pump. I think it’s held back by a lack of spring tension to overcome centrifugal force.
It has run in forward and the collar pushed (manually) to full cam and it easily turns the prop, so it’s not so overproped to stop it spinning up.
So if I adjust the tension on the weights it should resist centrifugal force pushing it off cam?
Any ideas.

The Kromhout I had was a total loss oil system (M1) The engine room always smelt of diesel/fumes. Going through a tunnel near Kings Norton ? it was particularly heavy on the lungs.
