I'm a bit surprised that they apparently tried to persist with your existing diesel. It's not my subject, but must confess I'd have been inclined to chuck it and start again after the first failure.
Easy to say, of course, if it's not me buying the new diesel

I'm not keen on it for threaded joints, but a few starnds of hemp in the threads should help considerably.

Can't stop the leaks either from around the top, or out the bolt hole, and on taking apart realise I am missing some of the smaller seals that should be on the bolt below the lower plate and between the bolt head and the canister. Add to that the seal that comes with the filters is a very small cross section compared to the size recess (is it really supposed to be that small?) ......so all in all am trying to improve the general situation!

I can understand your frustrations. I've improvised bolt seals in the past from an O-ring assortment.
Unfortunately, filter makers used to supply an assortment of top sealing rings but that is no longer the case, whether you get the size you need will to some extent depend on the filter maker.

Basically yes the same times as Saltersford, though Preston Brook times are shorter because it's a longer tunnel.
Going North, on the hour for 10 mins.
Going South, on the half hour for 10 mins.

Towergate have undergone a major restructuring, basically selling off big chunks of the business to reduce their debt. I had my business and home insurance with them, the business stuff was unceremoniously traansferred to another company only a few weeks after renewal, and I had a call just yesterday from a company I'd never heard of which claimed to have taken over the TM home insurance book and offering me an instant quote.
If you have your boat insured with them your cover should still be OK even if TM go down the pan, because it'll actually be with Royal Sun Alliance or another company whose name escapes me. Worth just checking the policy, though

Hey if we lose the click-click-click it will become even easier to sell a lock cottage to a townie who doesn't like boats in their garden.
I was siiting in my garden over the weekend, trying not to listen to the shouty boaters and yappy dogs, and I was surprised at how many times I heard paddles drop unrestrained. Without going out & watching, I have no way of knowing whether these were deliberate ot accidental drops. We had a new top gate over the winter which has the horrible new catches, they don't stop anyone who wants to drop a paddle.
I might post a pic tomorrow.

I presume he's referring to the hydraulic combined speed/gear control fitted to give remote control of UC boxes. Fairly massive kit, with a big handweel at the steering position.
I've probably got a pic in a gearbox manual, I'll have a look later on.

Good to see our new customer service manager getting involved in something that is a major concern for boaters, this has been bothering me for years.

Have you taken that up with whoever built the marina, Dean? It seems like a big flaw in their business plan

I think you might stand more chance of success approaching your marina than Peel, unless you can somehow persuade Mr Whittaker that there is money in it for him

Well that takes care of the filtration side of my question, but what about the low pickup of the air at bilge level. How advantageous is that? Or is the difference minimal?
Keeps the bilges sweet (think wooden boat). Also on the Gardner the long tube is (should be) lined with felt, which quietens the airflow.

A little less flippantly, air filters on small marine engines only really came in when conversions of industrial or vehicle engines became popular, these engines already having them fitted.
Even today, some small marine engines don't have any air filtration - some Vetus/Mitsubishi models, for instance.

I notice that photos of marine engines tent to show vertical air intakes down at bilge level. I suppose this is to supply the coolest air, but what about filtration?

10.8 litres isn't it for a HA2? You'd think that they collaborated with the oil manufacturers to ensure you had to but a 3rd bottle just to get the 0.8 of a litre. Not that I'm tight fisted or anything...
I did an oil change on an HA2 a couple of months ago.
Emptied sump and gearbox with Pela extractor and the original sump pump.
Filled up with 2 x 5l bottles of Morris oil, after running for a bit to refill gearbox and filter it was dead on the full mark.
Of course, you will need more oil for topping up.

I still have a problem in my mind with this lamp. The chandler I brought it from said snip the negative and connect this to my existing battery return wire. However my meter tells me that the bulb holder is connected to the lamps body still after this wire is cut. I told the chap in the chandlers this and he said it's not a problem letting the current run directly through the lamps body and back through the boat. Is that correct? I've given up and brought another lamp with pos/neg wiring. Chandlers are happy to refund for other lamp so it's no big deal. I just want to know what's right in this case though?
