Canal boats are more interesting but we've only got Zomboat to watch! Who the heck would have a bright red bote?

Got Hulu today and started watching this. Thank you very much!!! It's hilarious! I hope to see Shaun, Ed, Liz and company in the future. ?

  2. Who would play Trump? My very first thought was Louie Anderson, but he's dead isn't he?

Ooops, no, not dead. Not quite right though. I think Saturday Night Live has a guy who does a pretty good Trump. Alec Baldwin?

That would be a hard one to cast. Obviously I have never spent much time seeing the Royal Family "in real life", so I'm not sure how close Foy and Coleman come to looking like the Queen. The guy playing Charles certainly seems to have the body language down pat though. And Trump.....not gonna lie, I find it hard to think of anything but comedic portrayals of him, and The Crown is not comedic. LOL Could Baldwin play Trump and keep it serious? I dunno. I kind of doubt it.

Brief summary of the walking dead.

Loads of shuffling flesh eating monsters out to get remaining humans.......

When that series came on, productivity in the office came to a complete halt as all the combat arms type gathered 'round the coffee maker and discussed what stupid thing they did the night before. LOL

I hope I can find Zomboat on YouTube. LOL But seems like the canals would be a poor defense against zombies of any sort. It's what.....4-5' deep? And you have to tie off going through locks, etc.  I suppose your typical zombie would have a hard time climbing onto a canal boat though.

Oooooo.....so maybe I'll get Hulu now.

    FYI

QEII is how we refer to the ocean line - NOT Her Most Gracious Majesty

Coal mining goes back several centuries and once a tip is started I guess they continue to be used, perhaps well beyond when they should have stopped. AFAIK the Aberfan tip was closed and had been for some years - probably 'new' building had encroached nearer to the tip than it shoud. There's probably  a book or two on the subject.

England (including Wales and Scotland) is very small - even when you take West Virginia as a model. Your coal industry is relatively modern - thus you could learn from our mistakes and anyway there's plenty of space to accommodate the waste safely.

Some years ago the RF passed all their Crown Properties over to the state and in recognition of that they get an allowance from the state - which could be changed at any time by the government in power. I'm a Royalist and happen to think that we get very good value from the whole 'royal thing'. It's great to think that there's some continuity in having a permanent focus, rather than one which changes every few years....

If you want to see more of our canal system have a look at the videos published by Minimal List. He's an American - comes from the west coast (buy hey, you can't have everything).

    Enjoy the fun.

Sorry, no offense intended. Totally did not mean to be disrespectful.

When you say properties, you mean just acreage, or like all the palaces, etc.? I noticed that the paintings and such in Buckingham Palace are not "theirs" per se, and often are rotated to the Queen's Gallery?

Watching CountryHouse Gent and Cruising the Cut are what brought me here (to CW) initially. LOL I've been following the Minimal List on Facebook. I got on here to figure out the legalities of me coming over and staying for an extended period of time. Unfortunately, it looks like short of becoming a citizen of the UK, I could only do 6 months at a time. But the whole canal boat living thing looks incredible.

  5. Oh, I agree on the actual history being more interesting. But it's also a lot more time consuming and you can't just sit down and take 50-minute bites. LOL Maybe once I truly retire I can dig into that.

Some of the stuff I found amazing/interesting.....

    1. How "international" the Royal Family (it is supposed to be capitalized, right?) is. I guess on some level I recall that the French and Germans have some ties to English royalty, but the show has illustrated it more clearly to me.
    2. The weirdness/duality of being royalty. I'm sure a lot of the drama is hyped up, but I imagine there is some truth to it. When QEII was talking to Phillip about what the Apollo astronauts were going through with being in the public eye....that was pretty cool. And talking to Charles about how they are supposed to be above politics and not take positions....yet if they say one thing, they have taken a position.

    3. Wales...that sortas make the whole United KINGDOM thing make more sense.
    4. Aberfan was eye opening. I Google-mapped the place and found it amazing they stacked spoil like that. Here in West Virginia, coal mining is still a big deal. We still have accidents occasionally. I am not 100% sure what happens with the spoil. Surface mining (or mountain-top removal/strip mining, if you prefer) creates a lot of spoil, but the mining company has to basically "rebuild" the mountain and seed it, so it doesn't just get stacked up. Our usual issue with spoil is they create these slurry ponds, which traps waste water (which is generally full of chemicals and coal dust). Sometimes the ponds burst their banks and spill into rivers, polluting them...though I think we had one not too long ago which caused a flood that killed some people.

    5. They (the RF) get an allowance?!?!?!
    6. It dawned on me every time she met with the PM for the first time, she said something to the effect of "go create a government in my name". I still don't understand how your system works, but the break between royalty and Parliament makes a little more sense. Do they really have some sort of emergency powers act where they can dissolve Parliament and install a new one????

As for my own family history, I'm adopted, so I never really got into the genealogy thing. My ex-wife did and was always mad that I was indifferent. I'm Caucasian, so that pretty much guarantees I've got European stock in me. LOL My son did one of those DNA things...he's got 1% Bantu/Congo/something or the other. Seeing that I was born in Georgia (the USA one LOL) I imagine at some point in my family tree, someone got overly familiar with the workforce.

I must Google Zomboat now. Is it like a canal boat version of The Walking Dead????

SWEET BABY JESUS IT IS!!!!!!! ?

  6. So.....are any of you across the pond watching The Crown on Netflix, and if so, what do you think?

I confess, I am addicted. Not sure why, as this sort of thing is not my usual fare. But much like canal boats, I am absolutely fascinated. I really need to read up on your history.

  7. Well, as you all have dashed all hopes of me having a multi-year float extravaganza (just kidding, I DO appreciate the reality check LOL) I have taken to telling my US RVing brethren and sistren about narrowboats. Needless to say many comparisons were made. One oft heard comment was "Well, we have endless miles of road compared to their 2,200 miles of canal". Despite the fact that our roads are indeed finite, I pointed out our roads are also full of idiot drivers texting while (whilst?) speeding and applying makeup or whatever. Even if you're totally preoccupied with your cup of tea, how much trouble can you cause at a max speed of 4 mph?

Don't answer that, I'm sure you all have some epic 'idiot boater' stories.

ANYWAY.....so batteries came up. Over here, AGM are fairly common. But coming up rapidly are these LiFePO4 batteries. They are lighter weight (which I don't imagine is a big concern for boaters?), are hard to kill (can be used down to something like 20% of their capacity), don't gradually decline in the juice they deliver.....big downside for them at the moment is cost (I have 2 300ah LiFEPO4s, each was about $2,500USD, about 33% of my whole solar install) and the fact they are temperature sensitive and need to be in an enclosed bay (thus losing some precious cargo space).

Just curious as to how your energy needs are met when you're not on shore power (which now that I think of it, is also funny....that's what we call it when our land-locked vehicles are plugged up at a campground).

  8. Definitely bonkers. And I do know what "queue" is,,,,,though there were several other words/slang that were totally over my head.

To be fair, that "food" was in a can/tin of uncertain age. I would assume that infantrymen everywhere, regardless of nationality, hate their rations. But it looked foul.

Meat pies, on the other hand (at least those seen in the YouTube videos) look interesting.

  9. A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat! ?

As a kid, I remember watching Dave Allen at Large and Benny Hill. I also remember watching Tom Baker's "Dr. Who".  There was an exercise we had in Germany around 1989 I think, where we had a squad from the 2nd Royal Green Jackets attached to our platoon. That was a lot of fun.....until we traded rations. Blood pudding???? But that is about the extent of my exposure to England. LOL

  10. ?‍♂️ Duh!

Thank you! That is literally the first day I had it. Drove up to Albany, New York to take delivery. At 35', it's about mid-sized by our RV standards, and despite having spent time in armored vehicles, driving it required a bit of a learning curve. LOL Like narrowboats, in most cases you don't need any special driver's license or training to operate one on the roads here.

To the OP, the allowed summer six months on the English canals gives the best weather.

You just need to buy a motorhome in North America as well and set yourself up for some nice southern states grey nomad winter touring as well.

    Good luck.

I already have the motorhome. ? Maybe I could arrange some sort of swap with a boater for a few months?

What you need to do is marry a British girl.  All British girls love a yank in a uniform.  Haven't you seen that film with Richard Gere?

I have, a long time ago. Three problems with that.....

    1. I'm not an officer, I'm a Sergeant First Class.
    2. "Gentleman" is debatable. ?
    3. I'm not Richard Gere.

What is CWDF by the way?

Could this be a route for @AllenTC2? If he has an Irish parent, grandparent, or great grandparent, get Irish citizenship in addition to US, then use the UK/Ireland living arrangement to come to the UK.

There was something about having relatives in that UK.gov/Visa link Kudzucraft posted, but alas, I am pretty damn American. LOL My family is from Tennessee as far back as I know of. Off topic, but I'm adopted, so who knows where my biological fam is from.

    Well, that's an option I suppose. ?

US citizens can visit as a Tourist for 6 months with no Visa required.

Since we plan on staying longer we will plan on appling in advance for a long term Visa. You can get a 1 year, 2 year and I think up to 5 years?

I have glanced over that UK.gov site, but short of working there, or perhaps studying, I didn't see anything about long-term visas. I did find something about a 'leave to remain' program.

Thank you all for the input. Clearly, I have a lot more researching to do. LOL

There are loads of really interesting narrowboat vlogs on YouTube and it's well worth watching them for the entertainment factor if nothing else but there is a couple called The Minimal List they bought a narrowboat a couple of years ago and filmed most of how they went about it and posted it all to Youtube so their family in other countries could follow them. The wife, Jo is British but the husband Michael is American/Canadian (it's not that I can't tell the difference, he genuinely is both) he mentions stuff from time to time about what it's like from a Non-Brit perspective, so might be of interest to you.

This might be an interesting watch for you. Also check out his other videos for general info on canal boating.

I am currently on Episode 69 of his series. "Travels by Narrowboat" was what I first stumbled across on Amazon Prime. I could not stop watching it. LOL I posted about it on another forum I'm on, and one of the folks there pointed me to Mr. Johns' series. ?

But seriously, if you decide to live under the radar I can't see them ever putting in enough effort to actually track you down and arrest you and send you back.

Hmmmm.....I am pretty sure I would NOT want to do that, regardless of how much effort your immigration guys may or may not put into looking. LOL I'd be a guest in your country, and act as such.

Is .ng not Nigeria. Nigeria is a Commonwealth Country so their visa applications will be very different from an American one.

No clue. That article appears to be pretty generic. Looking at it more critically, not capitalizing "US" in a few places does kind of detract from its credibility though. *sigh* Gotta love the internet.

LOL I suppose if I want a definitive answer, I could just call the UK consulate. And even if I do have to come back to the US after 6 months, how long do I have to stay here before returning?

Really? Brits can get 90 days in the USA on the Visa waiver programme, maybe 6 months if theres absolutely no conceivable reason you may overstay (relatives there, particularly children or grand children, seem to make this a more difficult and remote possibility rather than more likely).  We can't enter the Green Card Lottery either. It seems you'd rather have Russian mafia than a harmless, self sufficient Brit. Are we really so generous in reverse? I am happy to hear that we are, incidentally. Come and enjoy our canals and spend your pension here by all means! Healthcare may be your biggest issue, but probably also less of an obstacle than t'other way around. As for age, we all wear that differently. Ten years on the canals? Why not?

I could be wrong. I haven't really delved into it, but I'm pretty sure I can apply for a visitor visa and stay up to 6 months? https://www.gov.uk/choose-uk-visit-short-stay-visa

AHA! I could have mixed things up a bit. From https://www.ukvisaapplication.ng/do-us-citizens-need-a-visa-for-uk/....

US citizens are generally referred to as non visa nationals which grants them a visa waiver status,  therefore, they do not require a visa to the UK as long as they do not plan to stay for more than 6 months at a time, and they can show evidence that they plan to go back to America after 6 months has elapsed.

Something I'll have to research more, if things get serious.
