  1. This is perhaps a little ambitious, as the Claydon Flight of locks are (is?) currently closed for repairs. My man on the ground reckons they may be open again by mid-December.

FYI Athy if it's Claydon Flight it would be 'is' because flight is singular but as you used locks, which is plural, you were correct in usin 'are' :-)

  2. Everyone risks not liking it when they move aboard, quite a few of our friends thought we were insane, I've done a fair bit of community boating but never spent more than a couple of nights onboard a boat. You never know until you try, but if you want to minimise the risk, we've said it before, don't sell your house or get a boat built to start with.

Also its a good idea to give it some time, I remember Honey Ryders blog - she really hated it for quite a while but then fell back in love with the lifestyle again.

I had an absolutely rotten first six months, everything went wrong, stuff broke, stuff didn't work like I expected it to, but I got over it and myself and I love it now.

Although we've done several boaty hols, it wasn't until last week when we hired for a specific reason other than a holiday that it made me think, could I cope with livin in such a small space?

Last week the answer would have been no; today it could be a possibility.

It hasn't been plain sailin, various problems have cropped up. But all in all it has been a good experience but I'm not sure if I could do it as a fully ccr.

Time will tell as we are only in the exploritory phase of gettin a nb.

  3. Tullz, is there a problem with the letter "g" on your keyboard?

    Nah

it's an old irc habit of not puttin' a g on the end

I think I just might not bother with the apostrophe tho

  4. Is underfloor heating a sensible and cost effective way of heatin' a nb and is it practical?

As I've not seen it mentioned in magazines or on boatbuilders' websites, I don't know if it's a feasible option.

  5. It never ceases to amaze me as to how naive (subsitute stupid) some people can be.

We are nearin' the end of our two week hire to see if we could cope with livin' on a boat as the winter draws in and with each other in a confined space.

Several folk have said how sensible and then proceed to tell us about couples who sell up lock, stock and hogshead to live on a nb without ever havin' spent more than a day on one, only to discover that they hate it!

We also helped a couple through Bunbury locks on a share boat only to have the wife confide in me that she never wants to do it again (it was their first time out).

So why do they do it? *puzzled look*

We intend to spend another couple of weeks on a semi trad (we're on a trad at the mo) some time in either January or February.

Makes sense to me of tryin' before buyin'; could save a lot of dosh and/or one's marriage!

off to put cottage pie in oven!

  6. Was thinkin of headin into Chester so where is a good place to moorin the heart of the city?

Are the moorings at the mill hotel ok or are we headin into 'bandit territory' like other boaters have said to us?

We didn't make audlem after all; next time.

    Hey ho!

  7. 70%...a discerning woman then

    Green and Blacks or Lindt?

Neither. I prefer little artisan producers.

This is made by Daniel's Delights and contains kentucky bourbon which I could smell as I opened the wrappin.

Back in ediblah I buy my clever chocolate (that's what BOGG calls it) from the chocolate tree.

    It's all very yummy

oh btw, as this thread is about what jobs people do from their boats, and as it was my question to start with -what do you do to keep the wolves from the door?

lettin the chocolate melt on my tongue

  8. If memory serves me correctly (which isn't often these days) I think unsnipped toms have a territory of about 1sq mile

Ours was a stray and we caught him, got him snipped and he now sleeps most of the day and brings us presents of mice alive, dead and partials! *yick*

  9. Although we are only on a hire boat for a couple of weeks I made sones as soon as we got under way. Saturday eve was steak and kidney pie with mash and purple sprouting.

Made soup from ham hock and butternut squash for lunch Sunday

dinner was pork chop dauphinoise potatoes with carrots cooked in orange juice

last nite was pasta with homemade pesto, spinach salad with avocado blue cheese and hot bacon

Moored at Nantwich so got pheasant and chicken from the Market.

The former will be made into a casserole.

Must admit was tempted by several nice real ale pubs.

seem to do more cookin on the boat than at home

    off to do lunch

  10. No....that is SHE who must be obeyed....!

Ignore it at your own peril!

    I wish you well....

Now, where do we send the floral tributes?

In the darkest part of the nite I realised it was She Who ...

I nearly clambered out of bed and correct my mistake but Morpheus wrapped his sticky tendrels around me eyelids and rammed 'em shut!

Wasn't swmbo from Rumpole of the Bailey originally?

Oh no slur was intended and I hope none were taken, my grey matter doesn't work as it used to, I blame me sprogs

off in search of some form of repast

  11. We do, it's called rustic mash, love it.

Well my vision may have been coloured by my mother's version (she couldn't cook - this was the woman who thought gravy was an oxo cube and water until she got married!)

It was grey; it was lumpy; it was sloopy and tasted revolting!

Not me mother silly , her mash! *sheesh*

  12. Hollandaise Sauce

Great on fish and eggs benidict is my favourite breakfast (made with streaky bacon rather than ham)

    Paul

Hollandaise with lobster and thick chips *drool*

Or with poached crayfish (either the liberated Merkin Johnnies or the ones cooked in fumet)

    Tullz

who seems to be doin a tad too much droolin' today!

  13. Another dumb question from a wannabe CCr

Out of curiosity, what businesses do you run from your boats?

I vaguely remember someone doin something in shoes (I've always coveted a pair of Jimmy Choos but with my hoofs - forget it!) or was that a dream?

And does anyone know what the H&S and Enviromental Health issues are with running a food based business from a boat are?

Like I said in an earlier post, I have plenty more *dumb* questions.

  14. Why peel potatoes? You are throwing away the best bit.

Have you had mashed potato that has been made with unpeeled spuds?

    *shudder*

I s'pose I could peel, dry, lightly oil and salt them, followed by throwin them in a hot oven to crisp up - spud scratchins rather than pork

  15. Spring bank holiday, the one at the end of May.

This site will be updated at sometime no doubt http://www.crickboatshow.co.uk/

If you want to take a boat, then the best advice is pay to moor (book well in advance), last year I believe it was £80 plus your entrance fee.

    or

get there a fortnigth before hand and try to find a space

    or

be prepared to walk along way.

    or

    go by car. (free parking)

Or forgo the boat and book a B&B

    Thanks for that Keith

  16. I try and recycle as much as possible and all my organic biodegradeable stuff from the kitchen gets dumped on our compost heap, but what do you guys do with your spud peelings (hootch perhaps)?

I know I'm goin to get some wonderful, biting comments, which is what makes this site wonderful to read

more dumb questions to come later
