  1. Hi all

Can anyone recommend a good surveyor that covers the North west area.

Im finding it impossible to get an insurance quote withour having a Hull survey on my 1982 30ft Springer, it has been replated but I have no idea when that was done, but was over 6 years ago at least.

It is on hardstanding on a farm on the Shroppie, just outside Chester.

    many thanks

  2. Hi Nik

Im at Golden Nook too but am on the bankside doing up a 30ft Springer and hopefully going in the water with the November crane, and I agree a fantastic location I love the sunsets there. I am there most weekends and now the light nights will be here cant wait for the longer evenings too.

  3. Depending on your particular insurance (some may have clauses), I undertand that it is generally not a problem to lend your boat, as long as you do not get a reward in return. How far the insurance considers a bit of bartering (you help me paint the hull, you get to use the boat for a week?) a 'reward' depends on the insurance. Call them to find out.

But don't forget that if you are a member of RCR, only the 'Gold' level covers for 'any driver'.

great , thanks for replies, will look at Insurance and RCR now before any more barters take place, may be back to baby/dog sitting offers.

  4. First of all paint steel with good quality steel primer, when it's dry brush polyurethane glue onto primer spray with water then straight away apply previously cut and sized Kingspan and clamp in place using lengths of battening etc. Leave gaps between sheets and fill later with Pu aerosol foam and trim when set. If you can, make sure Kingspan finishes proud of any steel bearers so you can encase these in aerosol foam later. If I were to do it I would remove foil from one side of Kingspan and stick straight onto wet primed steel, saves all that messing with glue. Maybe leaving foil on is sufficient I don't know, you could try a few experimental pieces to see which is better. when done all steel needs to be covered with Kingspan or Pu foam, no gaps or pinholes which will allow condensation to form. Really take your time and make a thorough job it will pay dividends later in cold weather.

Edited to add: sticking 9mm ply with Pu adhesive on top of Kingspan makes for a very robust finish.

Thats great, thanks for your advice

  5. Hi

I will be insulating my boat with Kingspan this weekend, should I fix it to the steel with some type of adhesive or will making sure its very tight between the battens and then with ply on top of it be sufficient ?

    Many thanks Jane

  6. hi Morphyous

Yes it is leaking from the fibreglass watertank, now have to move the fire, built in seating area and front wall to get under the bow to get to it, at least now I know where I have to start. Ive lifted the floorboards and everything else looks ok so thanks I will get some glass fibre matting/resin, would that be from a car type shop?

    Thanks

  7. Hi all

I have got the chance of electric to the boat this weekend so am thinking of taking an angle grinder with wire brush and taking off the rust on the over-plating so am wondering what primer to use please, I have read on previous threads International Primocon is the one to use but in the meanwhile will any metal primer do? Also has anyone got any recommendations of a hull surveryor near Chester please?

    Thanks

  8. Hi

Thanks for all replies, as I am off to a pre-booked jolly to Spain this weekend I will take photo's next week and hopefully have been able to source water leak and be ready with questions for next step, yes its still on hardstanding and i will look if there are 2 bilges.

    Ola for now

  9. Hi all

I've been lurking here for quite a while now and hopefully taking things onboard but as ive acquired a 30ft springer to refurbish i will be asking lots of questions. All I know of it is it was overplated in 2000, has either a SR2 or ST2 Lister engine, gas cooker been taken out, needs inside and out looking at and has water under the floorboards, which is my main concern. But where to start?

Can a hull rust from the inside out too?

Also is there a way of finding out how old it is just from the Index number?

The first thing I have done is order a hand-bilge pump to try and find out where the water is actually coming from, leaking watertank maybe?

Its on hardstanding where its been for the last year and started first time (but that was with easystart which ive later read never to do)

I am quite a novice on all maintenance issues even though i did once liveaboard with an ex-boyfriend. So all advice greatly appreciated and if anyone near to or passing Golden Nook farm, Hargrave, near Chester please pop in and say hello

Phew what a long post i'm not usually so serious , honest

    Thanks in advance

  10. Hi

My friend has recently moved on to her narrowboat at Golden Nook Waverton in between Chester and Nantwich and is a complete novice. Her 3 cylinder Lister (the last owner thinks its a Lister SR3) is now using lots of oil and she doesnt dont know of any mechanics in the area who would mind taking a look and giving her a quote and she could probably do with an all-round look over it and maybe a service. As I said complete novice but who is eager to learn as she is now a liveaboard. Any recommendations please?

    Thanks

  11. Hi

A friend of mine has had winter moorings at the Golden Nook at Waverton and has just been offered a longer stay there as there are a few boats coming out of the water at the next crane rental day. May be worth asking there. Also there are end of a farm on-line moorings in Ellesmere Port last time I looked ( but it was last summer) if you drive down the lane at the back of Rake Hall you will come across the farm or if you walk along the towpath from the back of Chester Zoo you will come across the moorings and there is a phone number on the farm sign.

    Hope this helps

    Jane

  12. Hi

Does anyone know of a contact number for the owners of Nb Stanton moored at Kings Lock, Middlewich please? We heard they are selling it but no-one at the boatyard nearby had any information on it neither did british waterways. Our number is 07716841271.

    Thanks in advance
