  1. . Unlike their working class predecessors, the doctors, lawyers and other middle class adopters had no intention of cycling in gutters and being grateful for any avoidance car drivers might offer (they knew the game in their own Porsche and Mercs), and didn't perceive themselves as an underclass in any way. They were determined to lobby for their rights and when those rights were impinged upon, seek retribution through the legal system.

In a city a car can either follow me because I will be in the centre of the lane or overtake if (as) safe to do so (as overtaking a car).

If cycle lanes are provided I will use those, otherwise I am the equal of a car.

  2. If you use power in the winter from engine or generator or shore power you will, whilst charging, suppress the output of your solar. The physics suggests the amount of energy available from sunlight in the UK is 10:1 summer:winter so the other things being equal, i.e. your batteries are in need of bulk charge, you'll get 10% (though not at any one moment so measuring amps won't be the way to tell)

  3. With only a 650 watt generator I would be more concerned about how powerful a charger it can run, which may be little more than 20 amp taking into account start up current. It may even be that the generators rating is not continuous either.

Suggest sticking with a conventional multi-stage charger set to the highest absorb charge setting of around 14.8 volts assuming lead/acid batteries.

I'd be interested in a link to this 20A charger that can be manually set to 14.8V absorption.

  4. I bought mine with a bankers draft. I had to go and get it signed by the bank manager. It is as good as cash without the wod of notes. The seller had drawn up a receipt with both our details on that both parties signed. Simples. On the other hand if I was the seller I would be looking for cash and check it with a uv light /pen before you hand the keys over as I did when I sold my caravan last year.

how quaintly old-fashioned. I would require the money placed electronically into my account.

  5. 'selfish cow', 'arsehole', 'wally' hmm.

If I can't cycle down a road on which I'm legally entitled to be, with high-viz and lights without having someone like you driving angrily and putting my life in danger then yes, I'm going to disagree with you ( as well as the way you say it).

  6. Being an arsehole isn't a pre requisite of being a petrolhead.

I personally don't like the idea of having a lycra clad Wally under my wheels so give them a wide berth and treat them with the distrust and disdain they deserve.

I can only admire the way you combine both.

  7. Do you use the standard mains adaptors for the MacBooks? or do you use a third party 12 volt adaptor? I couldn't find an Apple approved 12 volt adaptor last time I looked; just wondering if you (or anyone else) has experience with them.

MissMax mentioned a standard "spinny" drive in one of the MacBooks suggesting its an older model; and thereby the possibility of needing a "magsafe 1" and a "magsafe 2" (the end that connects to the charging port) adaptor.

The iMac will of course need an inverter.

    Steve (Eeyore)

I have the older MagSafe adaptor and a Kensington 12V power supply.

incidentally I have swapped my hard drive for an SSD and I'm sure (though not scientifically) it uses more power.

  8. Where he may well have come in contact with an unlit pedestrian, but since that's not a car that's finesad.png .

What I find offensive is that this dead cyclist had family and friends and, oddly enough, was a real person. I'm sure that all the people who knew him will all line up in agreement with you (who clearly knew him well, why else would you be entitled to an opinion) at how much of a complete a*se he was to go and get himself killed by a useless driver. Given her level of incompetence I'm not even sure he would have been safe on the footpath, she would probably have been drawn, like a moth to a flame, by the reflective jacket he was wearing and the lights on his bike and run him over anyway.

I agree with all of this and also find his 'reckless cow' comment sexist and offensive.

I imagine Gazza as a motorist driving a fair bit faster than the speed limit passing far too close to cyclists in the grounds that 'they shouldn't be there anyway'.

  9. Hmm, I'm on the fence, I found my 100w of solar managed about 4 or 5w at noon on a cloudless winter day. Not much help!

On a summers day it will get up to about 60w, so it's never living up to it's rating. It's a flexible one mounted flat. MPPT controller.

I keep hearing (in the real world) of people that know someone's aunty who has a friend that has the latest swanky American domestic panels and don't have to run their engines in the winter.

Are most of us playing with inefficient hobby panels and kit? Or is it a case of

    Chinese whispers?

I'd spend the money for the convenience, but I'm yet to find a real first hand installation that is proven to do the biz. Like MTB, I'd like to see somebody's controller read-out in the winter showing a worthwhile output.

Or is it a case of Chinese whispers?

This. Basic measurement and physics says solar is 1:10 winter to summer so 4-5W plays 60W is about right.
A basic understanding of the way the sun works in the seasons also shows that doubling an array will make a much smaller difference in the number of 'self-sufficient' days that people think.
I think early March to late september is easily achievable without wasting too much power in the summer. Experience shows 250W is good for a boat without fridge, 500W will do a fridge and a couple of laptops and a fridge, 1000W is for those who want to use household appliances on a large inverter.
  10. I've only had my Imac for three months.......(crys onto a Victoria sponge cake)

Is there absoulouty no way i could keep the Air and Imac (maybe using magic)

There's absolutely no reason why you can't use all three computers on your boat.

You simply need to be economical, if you're not using it shut it down, it's not often to need to run more than one..

The iMac will use the most power so only use it for mission critical stuff, the MacBook Air is the optimum for just messing about but the MacPro can be powered all day every day on a typical modern boat electrical system.

I have MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and a 24" display. 8 months of the year runs off a 250W solar panel.
