many thanks for the responses - been off line for a while so sorry for delays. Thanks for the part number, I have ordered one and when it comes and I do the job will measure up see if I can get a better Bowman as spare, don't want to remove the old cap yet as I can still run the engine and top up.

Hi, help please. Need a new end cap for the water cooling manifold on this engine. Diperk say it's marinisation bit so not there's, refer me to Rolopower. Rolopower say it is Duffield bit and they don't exist.However may be a generic Bowman part? Any ideas please re part numbers and suppliers? Many thanks, going through a lot of water!

Actually I do Webasto, Mikuni, Wallas and M.V., the MV (imported and supported by Mikuni UK) is an economical replacement for the old Mikini MX40 and is basically a clone of the Eber Hydronic. As has been said you may well benefit from a good service. White smoke is just incomplete combustion and a good decoke service will soon sort that out, if a genuine Eber dealer is offering a service at £200 that is quite reasonable and they will have the kit and experience to do it right

Thanks for the replies - all positive so far so maybe I should soldier on with the D5W. It's the earlier one than the Hydronic, doesn't have the smooth casing. NMEA only does Webastos.

Hi folks, I have an Eberspacher D5W not working, just huge amounts of white smoke and vague warmth in one radiator, on a very neglected 25 year old boat just bought. Been quoted around £200 for a service from Eber agents if I get it off but no guarantees this will fix it. Looked at forum, also had conversations with boatyard and told D5W difficult/impossible to service, use high voltages, generally problematic etc. Suggested Hydronic is better unit. Questions:

1. Comments please on the above, does this sound correct, would it be better to abandon the D5W? If not how to progress with it?

2. If so is changing to a Hydronic a good plan? If I can get a Hydronic at a reasonable price would it be easy to swap, is it compatible with exhaust, controls, pipework etc on D5W?

3. Is a Webasto any better, understanding we are presumably talking about a complete system change?

4. Any other ideas?

Hi, bought a boat with this unit, horrendous amounts of white smoke and tepid radiators. Boat has been sadly neglected so a service is well overdue. Are there any recommendations or ideas re the best way of getting this done please?

Thanks, that's really useful. I think I might be talking to you quite a lot! My main experience up to now has been with Lister SR3s which I love and built one up from scratch but I also fiddled with BMC 1.5s so I do have some water cooled experience.

 

Getting back to boats after 13 years because of my son. 42 hp seems a little obscene!

Many thanks for the responses - off to the boatyard tomorrow to see what i can identify etc from these, then think about obvious stuff like filter and oil changes, no maintenance history with the boat but engine looks clean and looked after. Seems like a good reliable unit from what I read. Thanks again, Chris
