  1. I have a 24v Jabsco par max 4 which says 4 amps at 10psi but, given it is a 25psi pump, that doesn't appear helpful?

Have you factored in the 2.5% difference in psi? It wont be much higher but worth factoring in for wire specs even if not for fuse purposes. I'd rather over cable for 18 metres (whatever they are (almost 60 foot in my mind)) of buried cable and under compensate the fuse?!

  2. Thanks everyone for your time and input.

Unfortunately is does look like it's the head gasket.

I'm out in the sticks at the moment so I'll have to work my way back to civilisation where I can get transport, deliveries, etc.

If you're anywhere near me (Dudley No.2 Coombeswood Arm (the old way to Lapal Tunnel)) I've a full tool box, a few chilled beers and enthusiusm cheers.gif

  3. Well, I am leaving this in the hands of grown-ups. Richard is going out tomorrow

    I thought you said grown-ups lol tongue.png

    <snip>.

If the head gasket is on its way out and letting gases into the system, why would it stop doing so after a few minutes?

    Rob.... </snip>

If it is combustion chamber to coolant channel head gasket failure it may be stopping after a short while due to gasses clearing the coolant channel of coolant. The pressure would be enough to keep the channel full of air and not allow the regress of the coolant.

You could check this by letting it foam till it settles, switching off for 5 minutes allowing the coolant to settle back into all the cooling system chambers (don't top-up the system at all) and then restarting. If you get a fresh lot of foaming then I think you've found your culprit unfortunately.

  5. I'll be there, most likely on the C&RT workboat 'Stour'.

The Cat won't be there either this year, which is a shame because I like the Stourbridge Rally. We could go without the Cat, but it's not the same, and I won't be able to time myself down Delph. Although I'd probably be slower than usual now that I know there are 9 locks there and not 8.

If you need a runner at the Blowers Green/Delph 9 just shout, I'm only just up the road ;)

Stourbridge is definitely on. I was at the Bonded Warehouse on Weds and Colin Clements, the manager and harbourmaster, told me that 66 boats were booked in, though he thought the weather could deter some. I'm going tomorrow morning to add some roses to a panel for a customer and could well return for the evening session. I thought of taking Resolute but a swollen knee has left me hobbling and locking wouldn't help at all!!

    Cheers

    Dave

Again, more than willing to crew up/run locks if needed :)

  6. Thanks everyone, 5 minutes in the workshop and done! A long reach broken torx bit, a deep 1/4" socket and an old bit driver later and I have...

A nice easy 'bodge' until I can sort my big tool box out where I think my genuine anti-vandal key is. At least I stand a chance of getting up the Delph 9 and the bottom lock at Brewers Green now :)

    Thanks again folks :)

  7. Thanks Alan, I've had some very tight attempts with mine, luckily I'll be on the Dudley No.2 and these are fairly forgiving. Problem is I've got move a boat for someone this afternoon, he doesn't have one and I can't find mine so I was going to make me a spare one lol. Any idea on a rough dimension for the square itself?

  8. In my years mechanicing (is that a word??) I've often found the easiest way of checking for cooling system leaks is a cold pressure test. A spare expansion tank cap drilled out with a standard tyre valve fitted, apply a tiny amount of pressure (I use 2 pumps on a bicycle hand pump) and any leaks will become very obvious. HTH.
