    The buying of a boat is the easy bit, the finding of a 'residential mooring' is going to be the difficult bit.

    I have already enquired about this at the marina I would like to stay at and they have said they have a few residential mornings available currently, so I'm hoping this will be ok!

  2. Degu - you are giving yourself maybe two months to find a boat to live on?

     

    Buying under pressure like this is a bad idea, more so if you have no experience.

     

    I wouldn't question your decision but I'd seriously think about buying a bit more time even if it does mean another house/flat move.

    Ideally yes, but boats seem a little thin on the ground currently. We do have a backup of moving in with family for a temporary time period but wouldn't want to do that for two long but we are certainly not planning on buying anything we don't feel comfortable with

  3. Just wondering at what point after all the research into looking to live aboard you had your F moment? The Funk It I'm living afloat!

     

    Me and my wife have been looking I into mo ring afloat with our son for about 2 years now and have book a nb holiday at the end of the month to see if we live being aboard in winter. We have coasted along and where hoping to buy a boat later this year. However the landlord has decided he no longer wants us to pay his mortgage anymore and kicking us out in April. As a result we have had our F moment and are looking more seriously at boat and getting a morning lined up as we don't really want to move to another house!

  4. After looking at living afloat for the past 18 months and still thinking its a great idea me and my wife want to try hiring a narrowboat in Feburary.

     

    The main issue we are having is that a lot of the hire companies are offering very nice modern boats when what we want is an older boat (late 80's early 90's) to refect the age of the boat we might be buying. Also want it to be as cheap as possible. This is going on the basis of if me, my wife and son (will be 8 months old in feb) enjoy being on a old boat in February then living afloat becomes a lot closer!

  5. That's for all the responses so far. Just to clarify some common responses:

     

    I am based in the midlands and the morning cost is based on a figure I got from the marina for a residential morning and this wasn't the cheapest residential morning I was quoted but the marina is in a good location for me.

     

    We do plan on having solid fuel as well as diesel heating so do need to factor in that cost. Main reason we want alternative to just solid fuel is due to the baby as others with children on a liveaboard have recommended this

  7. I often power curse when things get bad sometimes cursing isn't enough ! Something tells me becoming a boat owner will put both my cursing and power cursing levels through the roof

    Dam it! I have now tuned my post from being 'Are these costs im planning realistic?' to 'Yes you buy and live on a boat you will cursing all the time'

  8. are you doing your own servicing as burning that much diesel you will require a service every 5 months or so, Oil and filters will probably set you back £30

    You also need to alow for a repaint, £1000 per year as paint doesnt seemed to last long nowadays.

     

    Yes i do plan on doing my own servicing. Diesel is an interesting one as this really was a finger in the air. I plan to be based in a marina connected to main power cursing at weekings and for some holidays. But i like the idea of a diesel heater so not sure how much diesel this will all consume.

    I have blacking down as £27.12 a month based on some numbers I found here. The £30 was more a finger in the air so will put that in my figures.

     

    As for getting people to do the work i would like to do as much as possible myself and do plan on going on some of the maintenance courses.

    I was wondering what you think to the monthly costs I have come to for owning a 60 foot liveaboard for 2 adults and a baby. Im mainly trying to work out if its financially viable to live on a boat (not looking for it to be cheaper).

  11. Just a quick question on blacking, are the bottom of boats blacked?

     

    If yes how do they black the whole of the bottom? I mean the boat must be resting on something (unless levitation has finally been achieved) so do these bits get missed or are the supports moved?

     

    If no then why is the bottom not blacked?

OK do not want to draw this out in the case of Council tax it is the person claiming the the single rate that makes the declaration, are you saying that Councils you deal with monitor the post being delivered? If that is the case then a simple explanation is all that is needed the same as CCers over 61 do when claiming Winter Fuel Allowance. In the case of benefits the same thing applies.

     

    Ok don't want to go into much detail on this as I don't think this is the right place but for the example of single person discount the council can send a list of people who they think are fraudantly claiming single person discount to a credit agency who can then search for anyone else who is using the same address, then if someone else is using this address the names can be sent back to the council for further investigation.

  13. I just hate it when people give wrong information on something as important as this. Having someone use your address makes no difference to Council Tax or benefits.

    One thing I want to clear up on this is that you are correct on that this in the end this will have no impact but it could lead to an investigation by the council as to why you you are declaring single person discount but there are multipal people registered to the address. Experience on this will be very different accross the uk as different councils have different approaches to this.

  14. Using someone else's address means that for credit rating you share a home and credit rating - a problem for either becomes a problem for both.

    Your credit rating is not down to the address you are living as this is linked to an indervidual. Although the address is used to help in identification. Having the same address with someone with bad credit will not bring down your own credit rating unless you have a financal association with them (joint account for example).

     

    One thing this could affect is benefits and council tax discount as multipal people will be linked to the address. So for example if someone is living alone and claiming single person discount for council tax and then you start using this address it could lead to some issues.
