Thanks for all contributions!  Cynics included, it's good to have questions asked, points made we haven't considered.

We've done house sits before, works very well and personally I'd be delighted to have sitters to look after/clean/keep our boat warm in the winter months when we're away.

Agree with you, Roland - if don't try, you don't get.

I hope you get a positive response from your request...

  2. I am in tears reading your post and people's responses...cancer is a terrible disease that sadly takes loved ones before their time....The right words at a time like this so difficult to find, hold onto your memories and share them with family...my thoughts are with you, I am so sorry for your loss... A glass will be raised on the 8th...take care...Patty

  3. Thank you everyone..I do from time to time wander round the forums but just don't post so much..have had lovely day..made even better as son number 3 contacted from Papua New Guinea where he's tackling part 2 of his 5 Island challenge..was the best birthday present ever..

  4. If you haven't done locks before then Watford flight can be scary..others will no doubt disagree but I found them quite frightening as they are so deep and if there is not a lock keeper, I think for someone not experienced it might put you off...is Foxton open? They have lock keepers and are really good at giving advice and talking you through and theres heaps of room to turn at the bottom or even wind at the top if u are short of time.

  5. So I now know it was Footsie the cat..and yep the song is revolving around in my brain with a few missed words..I also remember busy Lizzie and the flower though not so clearly..

    Tales of the riverbank..loved that.

If anyone wants a Watch with Mother fix...Andy Pandy/Woodentops and Bill and Ben..head out to London of museum, fab place to wander around, don't miss out the Victorian bit with it's Secret Garden and the room with the Olympic torch recreation and then there is small children play bit with those 3 old black and whites on a loop. Ive taken grand daughter there a few times and she jigs away to the songs.

  6. The only time someone tried to get into my boat was when it was moored in the 'safety' of the Marina...by appearance they had used a screwdriver or something similar at the top of the door and splintered all the wood..I presume then disturbed as they didn't get in but left a mess...all the times I moored in the countryside no probs at all.

  7. Sorry to hear about Maisie but it sounds as if you gave her a good life which must give you some wonderful memories to hold onto.

Losing a dog is tough, they worm their way into our lives and leave huge space when they depart.

I still haven't taken on another..I get close but Molly is tough act to follow..

My thoughts are with you and Chris at this time

    Take care..

  8. To be fair, it got better for a while in the 19th century when they started washing their hands.

One of my friends worked for infection control and she used to sit on a ward doctor watching ..just to see how long it took some of them to wash their hands or even use the gel

Well said that man, the more contact you have with hospitals and doctors generally the more ill you get.

My apologies . I never meant offence in any way & i hpe none is taken . I must ve inadvertently misinterpreted your post .

I did get the impression that you would very much help if possible and thats admirable .

How does putting a piece of tarp , say 3 ft by 3 ft with a brick a each corner restrict airflow . Wind will get under it , air can enter and leave the cabin but rain cannot . Im not suggesting the vent is wrapped up with tarp , more that its laid over it .

My intention was not to annoy anyone , least of all Max , but winters about to hit and life aboard could become uncomfortable - a bit of prioritising with regards to problems and available budget is probably necessary .

Anyway , thats my opinion only and apolgies if i got the wrong end of the stick Patty Ann

    cheers

I'm not offended just wanted to set the record straight..Like Dyertribe I recognise some of myself in Max and I want her to succeed..ok so she didn't follow advice..but I guess all us stubborn women don't..we knows what to do.

  10. A very good post above by NC , no doubt echoing many others thoughts . The sealant over the mushrooms was beyond a joke & i feel has frustrated contributors to this thread .

Some excellent , and heartfelt advice from very experienced and knowledgeable folk ( not me ) appears to have been overlooked .

To waterproof those vents from rain needed a bit of tarp and four bricks . Job done till winters over .

Patty ann felt sorry fro Miss Max when she saw the mushroom vents . I did not . Its plain daft and fannying around being nice isn t any good .

Its her boat and her choice ultimately and as much as admire a " can do " attitude i feel it always both advisable and respectful to take on board good , well meant advice.

On the whole i feel Miss Max has done this & i applaud 90% of her attitude but there needs to be some recognition that some of this boating lark is serious otherwise things can cost alot of money , time , effort and as far as safety goes then things can cost much more .

That looks like a nice little boat & a potentially comfy little home for Max and the pets but it needs attention - some of that attention is more important than other bits and priorities need to be established and acted upon suitably .

Anyway , enough from me , i dont mean to sound negative but sometimes its necessary and Max needs to get a grip .

Perhaps you misinterpreted my post...I do not recollect saying I felt sorry for Max..she's doing her best and sometimes despite having a go, doing your best it doesn't turn out quite as it should...Ive bin there, got the T shirt and if I lived nearer and Max wanted some assistance and if I could help, I would go up...Just as I help others I can...for example the knotweed I fight is not actually my knotweed..it is the responsibility of disabled farmer but I've dealt with it because he cannot and if not done it will invade my property..

I never ask anyone to feel sorry for me..nor did I expect it...and I don't think Max wants anyone to feel sorry for her.

Max is getting to grips with a world she knew little about...and hopefully the advice on here is helping her.

    Have a good day

  11. Perhaps some feel there has been over reaction to Max's application of sealant around mushroom vents.

I've always been taught to ensure adequate ventilation when using solid fuels...here at the cottage I've even been told not to block all the air gaps(holes).

When I saw the photographs I wanted to get in my car and drive up to see if I could help...unfortunately I live an awful long way from where she is situated and ongoing issues here at Horror House have me more or less stuck here fighting a cottage that would prefer to stay in the last century...I am getting there though roof has now decided to ensure damp filters in to allow plaster to jump off the walls and in uncovering part of the roof I find woodworm have had a banquet...

The reason I follow this thread is partly because I admire Max's 'have a go attitude' and also I like to know she's still alive and well...

  12. Dear Max,

Please ensure you have some ventilation..widow open..

Ive just been told off here at Horror House for blocking up all the draughty bits..old houses need to breathe apparently....I really don't think myself old houses need the amount of holes this one had.

I'm also sure I don't need the old stone work falling down the old chimney..thats staying blocked cos where stone can fall I'm sure Roland Rat will visit.

I didn't think they would notice..they did and I now have fresh air breezing through..

    Take care

    Patty

  13.

Some solicitors have free sessions where people can discuss the merits of a potential case. If they think you have a strong case they might take it on as No Win No Fee.

Another option, (if you can use a residential address maybe not possible for full time on a boat?), is to look at adding Family Legal Insurance to the Home Insurance policy (£20 to £30 a year), if the terms read like you could use it to fight your case.

I had family legal insurance on my home policy and despite being in the right they would not take on my case..I ended up with the help of a friend researching law and taking them on myself..I was vindicated but did not receive ££..remember you don't get full costs awarded. Im going through another injustice ATM and again although I have all the evidence I'm not going to benefit financially.

Perhaps it does work for some..they gave advice over the phone but the leg work I did. It would be interesting to know if anyone has actually benefitted from home insurance legal help.

    On another note...

    Yooohooooo Max...U OK?
